Sparkle! How To Wear Glitter Eye Makeup

Ever since eyelids were dusted with silver sequins at Chanel's Autumn/Winter 2013 show, glitter eye makeup - aka the best way to have fun with beauty - has been taken seriously. And guess what? The trend isn't going anywhere for Spring/Summer 2014 either.

From sparkling brows to metallic eye paint, the S/S14 shows confirmed that metallic makeup will always be mesmerising - as long as it's worn in the right way.

So - how can we get the glittery eyes look, without looking like a fairy godmother at a fancy dress party?

1. Placement

While the most obvious area to apply glitter is around the upper lash line, adding a touch of sparkle under the eyes can look just as chic and even more daring. At Dior's S/S14 show, Pat McGrath used metallic paint to highlight the lids and the lower lash line. At Proenza Schouler, an ice blue glitter was added to the corner of the eye socket for a subtle, cool shimmer.

2. Colours

For a softer sparkle, stick to silvers and pastel blues or greens but if you really want to make the eyes pop, experiment with rose gold or bronze shades.

3. Texture

From powders to creams, choose your product carefully. If you want to get a dewy effect, try mixing a powder pigment with water. "Wet your eye shadow brush before you dip into pure pigments for a more intense application of colour", says Illamasqua Key Artist Charlotte Savoury. "Or mix the pigment with your favourite lipgloss for a high shine finish".

And if you want to go down the smoky, smudged route? Look for a creamy texture that can be layered around the eyes with a base coat of neutral eyeshadow. These products can also double up as excellent highlighters. "Illamasqua's Pure Pigment in Furore can be mixed with primers for an amplified shimmering finish to the skin", says Savoury.

4. Mascara

There aren't many girls who are happy to go without mascara, but if you can, try and leave lashes bare. It will make the rest of your eye makeup look all the more effortless.

5. Eyeliner

A flick of eyeliner can add definition and depth to glittery eyes. Stick to black or brown pencils and apply lightly.

6. Lips

Keep them natural. Who needs lipstick when your eyes are sparkling?
