More than five decades of designing ready-to-wear and haute couture for beautiful women - among them Jackie Kennedy, Sarah Jessica Parker, Michelle Obama and most recently Amal Clooney (yes, that stunning lace bridal gown) - has made de la Renta a true fashion great.

Whether it was on the runway, the red carpet or New York's Upper East Side - Oscar's designs were loved for their flattering shapes, vibrant colours and the exquisite attention to detail.

His dresses defined the idea of Hollywood glamour we know and love today - but he understood that there was more to fashion than creating a spectacle.

"Being well dressed hasn't much to do with having good clothes," he once said. "It's a question of good balance and good common sense."

Following Oscar's death, his eponymous fashion house released a statement that read: "While our hearts are broken by the idea of life without Oscar, he is still very much us.

"Oscar's hard work, his intelligence and his love of life are at the heart of our company.

"All that we have done, and all that we will do, is informed by his values and his spirit. Through Oscar's example we know the way forward.

"We will make Oscar very proud of us by continuing in an even stronger way the work that Oscar loved so much."

Oscar de la Renta, the great designer who made glamorous fashion relevant, will always be remembered.
