The advert, which uses CGI technology to bring Adelie penguins Monty and Mabel to life, is part of the department store's overall £7million festive campaign.

It will be broadcast for the first time on Friday (Nov 7) during the initial advert break of Gogglebox, which airs on Channel 4 at 9pm.

The ad is sure to rank alongside last year's massively popular John Lewis Christmas ad, The Bear and the Hare, which featured Lily Allen singing Keane's Somewhere Only We Know.

John Lewis will launch a range of Monty and Mabel merchandise following the success of The Bear And The Hare toys, which sold out.

Merchandise includes a children's book called Monty's Christmas and a proportion of the proceeds from sales will go to charity Barnardo's. Stuffed toys, an umbrella and pyjamas related to the campaign will also be sold.

John Lewis stores will also feature an area called Monty's Den, which uses Microsoft and Google technology to allow children to enter a virtual world.

They will then be able to interact with the characters who feature in the adverts.

John Lewis marketing director Craig Inglis said: "At John Lewis, this time of year is all about helping our customers create their dream Christmas.

"We hope this uplifting tale of Sam's love for his friend Monty will remind people of the magic of Christmas through a child's eyes and inspire them to think how they can make the festive season extra special for their friends and loved ones."

Last year's The Bear And The Hare campaign went on to become John Lewis's most popular Christmas advert, so British singer Odell is likely to have his biggest ever chart hit on the back of this year's ad.

His predecessors Gabrielle Aplin and Lily Allen who sung the soundtrack to the last two John Lewis Christmas adverts both had number one singles.

Until now Mr Odell has achieved just one top 40 single, making it to number 10 with his single Another Love last year.

Real Love, written by John Lennon, was a number four hit for The Beatles in March 1996.
