What's it like being inside a capsule of metal that's ploughing through huge swathes of plasma as it fights to return home?

Well it turns out that it's actually rather beautiful. A stunning red light glows from the edge of your window while white hot plasma sparks and flows past your vision.

Trying to re-enter the Earth's atmosphere is one of the most dangerous things a human can do. You're travelling at over 20,000mph and experiencing temperatures of over 3,000 degrees, it's terrifying.

The video was shot by NASA astronaut Mike Hopkins as he left the ISS and headed home. The rare footage is part of a larger video which discusses life onboard the International Space Station.
