A 12-year-old girl was horrified when she found eight maggots squirming in her bowl of supermarket rice.

Maisy Hollinshead, from Stockport, was about to tuck into her dinner when she discovered eight 'lumps' with lines running through them and with brown heads.

When she showed the lumps to her mum, Jenny, she immediately identified them as maggots.

But if that wasn't bad enough, the family's queasiness was made worse by the fact that they'd already eaten three other boil-in-the-bags from the same box.

Jenny contacted her local branch of Morrisons, where she bought the rice, and an investigation has now been launched.

Jenny told the Manchester Evening News: "Maisy has been checking all her food since it happened. She's only 12 years old and she could have very easily eaten it.

"At first, I got no apology, they just said they'd look into it and that's what infuriated me.

"They only apologised after I contacted the newspaper and put something on social media, then they got back to me and apologised."

Morrisons has now referred the matter to their Food Technical Team to carry out a full investigation.

In an email to Jenny, Morrisons executive Lorraine Dickinson said: "I was sorry to learn of you and your daughter's findings when opening the rice you purchased from our store.

"Please accept my sincere apologies for this.

"I did refer this matter to our Food Technical Team who have requested, so that a thorough investigation can be completed it would greatly assist if you could return the sample to ourselves for examination.

"Once this information is to hand, please be assured that this matter will receive our prompt attention."
