'The Earth Is Looking Like An Immense Pile Of Filth': Pope Goes On Climate Change Twitter Rant

Pope Francis has said the earth is looking "more and more like an immense pile of filth", following his ground-breaking encyclical on climate change, which was formally published on Thursday.

The pontiff highlighted the "unprecedented destruction" of the environment in his eagerly-awaited public letter, and also made his stance on climate change crystal clear.

As if his strongly-worded encyclical wasn't enough, the Pope tweeted out this message:

He also directly linked society's attitude towards materialistic goods with the earth's current state:

Drew attention to the plight of the poor:

And then pointed out the need to respect our surroundings:

The leader of the Catholic Church didn't mince his words in his public letter either, saying: "Climate change is a global problem with grave implications: environmental, social, economic, political and for the distribution of goods. It represents one of the principal challenges facing humanity in our day.

"If present trends continue, this century may well witness extraordinary climate change and an unprecedented destruction of ecosystems, with serious consequences for all of us."
