Independent Manuscript Researcher

Dr. Keith Small is an independent Qur’anic manuscript researcher.He is an Honorary Fellow of the Bodleian Libraries and the Centre for the Study of the Book at the Weston Library, Oxford University. He currently acts as a Qur'anic manuscript consultant to the Bodleian Library at Oxford University for their Qur’anic manuscript collection. He also leads the panel devoted to Qur’anic manuscript studies at the International Qur'anic Studies Association’s annual conference in the program unit “The Qur’an: Manuscripts and Material Culture”. Dr. Small has presented his research at academic conferences in Europe and the USA. He has also lectured at various American and British universities and post-graduate institutions. His book Qur’ans: Books of Divine Encounter was published by Bodleian Library Publishing in July 2015. It is a history of the Qur’an as a book told through pictures of Qur’an manuscripts in Oxford University collections. His book Textual Criticism and Qur'an Manuscripts was published by Lexington books in April 2011. It is the first book-length application to Qur’an manuscripts of textual criticism techniques used in biblical studies and other ancient and medieval literatures. Also an ordained minister, Dr. Small has a background in Christian ministry and Christian-Muslim relations. Dr. Small has also taught various undergraduate, graduate and post-graduate courses in the UK and North America concerning Islam and Christianity. He is also an Associate Research Fellow at the London School of Theology.
