Going Underground: Subterranean Spaces

Posted: 13/12/11 10:38

In the underbelly of all our cities, in crepuscular cellars and candlelit caverns, lie alternate worlds, subterranean spaces mostly hidden from the unknowing eye. Honeycombed underneath the hum-drum of city life these spaces add a mysterious charm to our urban landscapes and enchant those who happen to stumble upon them. Take a look at our favourite subterranean gems and from now on keep your eyes peeled for that unmarked entrance or secret doorway that could lead you into the urban underworld that sleeps beneath our feet.

Hidden in the underbelly of the Mercer Hotel in New York, the Submercer is an unmarked subterranean club, catering to those in the know. This stylish underground space is not easy to find by any means. Make your way down one flight on a freight elevator, then pass through two sets of doors and a wine cellar, then finally emerge in front of the entrance, wrestle your way past the sturdy bouncers, and you’re in. Easy.
