David Attenborough’s return to our screens in last night’s spell-binding ‘Planet Earth II’ has been received by fans with adoration unique to the veteran broadcaster.

More than 9million viewers tuned in for the new series, billed as the most expensive nature series ever made, filmed over three years and including more than 100 field trips.

While the footage was extraordinary, it was Sir David’s appearance in a hot-air balloon, in in his 91st year, followed by his reassuring, awestruck but authoritative narrative that really warmed hearts, and made viewers so happy, they almost sounded sad - about his age, and the fact that he’s not running the whole world.
