A seven-year-old girl has died after she was hit on the head by a rock thrown by an elephant.

She had been with her family at a zoo in Rabat, Morocco, when the animal picked up a large stone with it’s trunk and hurled it in the air on Tuesday.

The girl was knocked unconscious and taken to hospital where she later died.

The aftermath of the incident was captured on a mobile phone

A statement from the zoo said the animal’s enclosure met with international standards, adding “this kind of accident is rare, unpredictable and unusual.”

The moments after the incident were recorded on a mobile phone and uploaded to YouTube.

The clip shows the elephant waving its trunk before the camera focuses on the stone. In the distance a crowd can be seen gathered around the injured girl.
