Loud and Proud to Be British!

Posted: 28/05/2012 00:00

I have to tell you I'm feeling extra, extra, EXTRA patriotic at the moment with all the wonderful things happening at the moment for the Diamond Jubilee and the Olympics. I've always had a sense of patriotism since being a young boy. My first sense of this was when, in 1977, at the Queen's Silver Jubilee (which only really seems like a blink away) we had a huge street party. That was back in the days when the whole nation seemed to instinctively and collectively gather together and celebrate all things magnificent and British.

We had a big fancy dress party in my street- a little cul de sac in Salford - and I came as a robot which my father proudly and painstakingly put together over a period of about two months. He painted it black and gave it mad silver eyes (it was very Metal Mickey-esque!). I actually won the competition and that was my first memory of all things patriotic along with all the Union Jack flags running across from lamp to lamp in the street. It's a very 'feel good' memory for me to reflect on as we start to gather together to celebrate our nation this year.

I've been performing outdoor concerts across the United Kingdom for the best part of 10 years, and it's the outdoor festivals more than anything that usually have that 'Last Night of the Proms' style of performance with the likes of Land of Hope and Glory, Jerusalem, Rule Britannia, Flower of Scotland, Calon Lan, Danny Boy - all the rousing greats! I love all that and that's why I included them on my new album as they speak to, and inspire, the nation. Because all being said, it is a nation that deserves inspiring and should celebrate its history and diversity. It's a great thrill and privilege to be able to sing the songs I have mentioned across the Jubilee on my new album and also at two special concerts at the Royal Albert Hall to support the Queen's Diamond Jubilee. It's a great honour and something I'm incredibly excited about.

My enthusiasm for everything British is massive and wherever I travel in the world, whether its Japan or the United States, I am always enthusiastic about who I am and my background - right down to the fact that I was born and bred in Manchester. I'm so incredibly proud of my roots, particularly my Northern roots that wherever I travel and wherever I may be across the world, I spread the word of, and celebrate, Great Britain. I remember I once did Good Morning America with the US presenter Diane Sawyer. She spoke to me briefly before my performance and then introduced me like this: "Russell Watson - talks like a Beatle - sings like Pavarotti!" It was very funny as she didn't know her mistake! I mean, Manchester is very close to Liverpool but she didn't get my Manc accent at all! I had to explain it all later to everyone's amusement.

I don't think cities should worry about projecting an identity or thinking it should have one- it simply 'happens' and it 'IS'. Every single area in the UK has its own personality and ID. And it's not just in accents - but also in behaviour. It's quite wonderful. I notice particularly as an artist, as I travel to different locations, lots of differences in the way an audience react to a performance. In the UK you get different regional responses to performances up and down the land and that what makes our country so special. In places like Liverpool and Glasgow they go mental throughout whilst in other places like London it's a bit more restrained until the end! It's the diversity of it: the local colloquialisms, the food, the architecture and the local accents. It's a very special country.

Russell Watson's new album Anthems - Music to Inspire A Nation is out today.

"That was back in the days when the whole nation seemed to instinctively and collectively gather together and celebrate all things magnificent and British."?? I don't think so! In My parents used to laugh about this kind of drivel being quoted about 1936 - it was drivel then, and its still nonsense. I recall having an excellent time at the silver jubilee but it had more to do with a day off and having fun with friends than about HMQ and her strange family.

Why should we always put ourselfs down,As four different countries we are good, but together as Great Britain,we are something special.
10:11 PM on 05/28/2012
What is special about the four together that England would not be on her own?
07:01 PM on 05/29/2012
Yes your right, what can we do with 55 million, that we cant do with 65 million.

What wonderful history we have, we should be so proud of our old colonial invasions and how we so wonderfully took away the rights and land from many indigenous people. Conquering and dividing all over the place. So heart warming.

So I take it you would rather we left the rest of Europe to Hitler
10:14 PM on 05/28/2012
I think the nations who fought for their independence from the British might have a view on that?

Did we colonise Europe? Musta missed that one.............
07:19 PM on 05/28/2012
Yes, i live in Nz one of the many countries that we defiled in the name of the crown, its really quite embarassing.
I have never seen the purpose of picking a random German family, calling Royal, and throwing billions of tax payers money upon them and then line the streets going ooh, aah and waving little flags that have been made in China.

I am sure Philip Windsor ( although not his real name) would also find it very amusing while he enjoys and takes advantage of his gifted position.

haha you lot who always blather on about the colonialist days of the English empire, i ask you lot, who empire didnt have that on their record? name one and i'd call you a liar..you go on and on about this and that about England and what happened in the past, but you dont admit that the world..civilisation wouldnt be where it is without England and other empires in the past doing what they did, spreading their version of civilisation across the globe..slavery is not right obviously, looting pillaging isnt either..but when you spread democracy, science, equality...balance..its all about balance...stop using the same rhetoric about Englands past..its old and pointless and quite redundant, you dont like Englands history..tough, its history..but then you probably dont like greek history, or persian history, or chinese history, or japanese history, or scandanavian history or american history..or many many other countries histories either

Correct me if im wrong did the brave lads from NZ not fight beside the British troops against Hitler. They did so not because they were forced by our Govt but because they were comrades in arms & so did the Aussies whom I have a great admiration for as well

Why don't you say proud to be English? Because its not PC any more?
08:43 AM on 05/29/2012
Ah but what's "English"? In my experience the people who go on about being "English" most tend to live in the London commuter belt and a couple of Northern towns. A lot of people who are English actually consider themselves to be British.
06:59 PM on 05/29/2012
Just any time I hear British it seems to be followed by 'man who just got back from al quida training camps in Pakistan '. I'd define English as anyone with a majority of genetics originating from the past few thousand years in England, from around the 5th century.

Theres a world of difference between 77 and now, in 77 you could actually find a job in Northern England, now, unless of course you're an artist, its cannon fodder while interfering overseas in other country's business or trolley collecting for the local supermarket. Whats changed over the years, successive governments destroyed British heavy industry and laid waste to the north, Oh Manchester is doing great, try twenty minutes down the road or one hour across the pennines and you'll find patriotism in short supply along with the money in the peoples pockets, but don't worry, "We're all in it together"

Sick of politicians you're about my age aren't you mate? I don't remember us Northerners being that excited about the Jubilee in 77 either?
Personally I'd say congrats to the Queen, you deserve to retire luv, I admire your sense of duty, but can't pretend I really care about all this. Thanks for the 2 days off though!

What sycophancy! Quite astonishing! I'm amazed that cringers like this still exist! Better brush up on your forelock tugging, There's gonna be a lot of it about in the next few weeks!

Very nice to hear your patriotism, but the monarchy is not an essential part of British identity. Republicans care just as much about their country as monarchists claim to. Country and monarchy are clean separate things.

At last!!! Someone with something sensible to say. I totally agree with you. I have never heard of russell watson and his tirade is embarrasing.
