Clearly, age alone is no barrier to sexual activity, but there is a 'use it or lose it' aspect to sex in later life, and for older people, masturbation is probably the easiest and most effective way of sustaining both sexual desire and sexual function.

Some men are put off before they even start. Because screening can reveal issues about future fertility, current health and the health of any existing, or future children, men are, quite rightly, advised to think very carefully before they decide to donate sperm.

Although retirement is viewed as an individual experience, it has an enormous impact on marital relationships. Marriage is in a state of transition and the men I have spoken to for this research project hold contradictory views on its importance as a relational construct. However, they do consider the institution of marriage to be a necessary safeguard for the family unit.

Female sexual desire is undeniably complex, but the existence of an approved treatment will at least allow women to feel that they have an option, and post approval, the expected tsunami of associated advertising will help to raise awareness about female sexual health in general and female sexual dysfunction in particular.
