Hague Says Cameron Meeting With Coulson At Chequers Was 'Normal, Human Thing To Do'

Foreign Secretary William Hague has defended David Cameron's decision to invite his former press chief and former-News of the World editor Andy Coulson to Chequers weeks after accepting his resignation.

Cameron met Coulson at Chequers for lunch after in March, Government documents show. Downing Street said that Cameron had invited his former press chief "friend" and had paid for the lunch himself.

The released list of meetings Cameron had with press figures also showed an unpublicised meeting with James Murdoch.

Speaking to Sky News, Hague said the invitation was nothing more than "a normal, human thing to do".

In another interview with BBC Radio 4, Hague said: "In inviting Andy Coulson back the Prime Minister has invited someone back to thank him for his work who worked for him for several years that is a normal human thing to do, I think that shows a positive side to his character and actions."

Deputy leader of the Liberal Democrats Simon Hughes also refused to denounce Cameron's decision:

"If you have a loyalty and an obligation to somebody who worked for you, and did a good job then, whatever the implication might be, you might want honourably to support them and say thank you."

John Prescott told BBC News that the meetings were a mistake, and showed the prime minster was too close to the Murdochs.

Prescott said: "I think it shows the lack of judgement by the Prime Minister Cameron, we all thought it was up to the period when he made his statement about things were wrong but he's now continued the dinners and the meetings and he's very much wrapped into the Murdoch operations."

Isn't it strange that before this all broke, Cameron sliced the BBC budget by almost half.....wonder if that came up in the private meetings with the Murdochs. At the time of the BBC cuts, the deal for bskyb was almost concluded..... the BBC would have be their main competitor, but certainly not now with half their money gone. Cameron should resign immediately and brought up on charges of corruption.

Some, those who don't mind a bit of mucking around being engaged in as it is perfectly normal for them, would of course think this the normal human thing to do. They would hope to convince the rest of us that it was completely honorable all the while conspiring and then lying about it . We,t he rest of us, are not quite that easily fooled, and would consider it wiser to have avoided any further meetings, as it would tend to point up the fact that far too much familiarity was afoot.

So when will rank-and-file members of the Conservative party start demanding that Cameron step down as party leader?

Cameron's election was paid for by Murdoch, either with cash or free publicity. Cameron should resign immediately.

The relationships between the Murdochs, the police and the Prime Minister seem to be rather questionable and murky through this whole process. How could anyone hope to get the truth or justice in such circumstances?

Who ever heard of CEOs fraternizing with the staff once you sack them or once they hand in their notice?

What beggars belief is that Coulson managed to get not just a couple of minutes with Cameron despite his busy itinerary but secured a private luncheon and an hour of the PM undivided attention at Chequers.

Good-bye, David. No. 10 is really much too small and cramped to comfortably accommodate your ambition. Perhaps you can run for King.

Hague has been paid £400,000 from New Corp for articles in the NotW - and is quoted in his members interests as saying "I occasionally accept hospitality from SKY Sports to attend Chelsea Football Club for some of Chelsea's home matches." In short he appears to have 400,000 good reasons to think it normal

Sounds to be like a classy thing to do. God for Cameron.

Could I ask, what the heck could you possibly be complaining about when one friend takes another to lunch after they have gone through a difficult time.

My goodness you need an attitude adjustment.

Wonder if Cameron is getting the feeling he needs to spend more time with his family.........

Oh Yeh--- they have 'no confidence' votes, don't they?
