New Study Shows Seven Ways To Reduce Your Chance Of Getting Alzheimer's Disease

Three million cases of Alzheimer’s across the world could be prevented in seven easy ways, a study in The Lancet Neurology suggests.

A mixture of keeping healthy, and exercising could help many dodge the “epidemic” of Alzheimer’s, according to a review by psychiatrists published today.

Quitting smoking, increasing physical activity, enhancing mental activity, controlling you blood pressure and diabetes risk factors, as well as managing depression and obesity can all help combat the disease.

The study shows lifestyle and dietary risk factors might cause as many of 50% of cases of Alzheimer’s disease worldwide.

Lead author Dr Deborah Barnes of the University of California told the Huffington Post UK: “I think it’s exciting that our study suggests half of cases of Alzheimer’s may be due to risk factors that are modifiable. If we can change our behaviour a bit it could help with this epidemic.”

Dr Barnes added: “The policy implications are worldwide. They’re huge.”

Professor of Psychiatry of older people at University College London University Gill Livingston said the study showed it was time to start looking at “brain health” as well as “heart health”.

Professor Livingston said there was a genetic component to the disease, but being “active” may to help stave off the illness. She said other studies had shown that being socially as well as mentally and physically active was also helpful.

“ Its an exciting time with lots of advances. We are also going to need an array of drugs and strategies to help prevent the illness occurring and progressing and help families as well as people with the illness cope with it .”

The news comes as separate study UK in the Lancet concludes that two main antidepressants prescribed to dementia sufferers do not work.

The study suggests sertraline or mirtazapine can have side effects on those with dementia and work no better than placebos.

This article mirrors what I have been saying for awhile. Many researchers are calling Alzheimer's Disease (AD) Type 3 diabetes. The take-home from this article is that if you can change the factors that are risk factors for diabetes, you can truly impact the development of a disease that has no effective treatment. 

These lifestyle changes include making proper food choices designed to keep insulin and glucose levels low; to lose weight; and to avoid Metabolic Syndrome, which is associated with diabetes, stroke, heart attack, high blood pressure and abnormal blood fat levels. 

You should also exercise and remain active, avoid smoking and excessive alcohol, de-stress regularly, and avoid contributing drugs, for example, those that dry your mouth and slow your intestines and those that deplete the body of Coenzyme Q 10, which is useful for energy generation.

And more guidelines recently added:  avoid gum disease (gingivitis) and the inflammation it produces, and restrict exposure to general anesthesia, which can damage the brain and induce plaques and tangles to develop--these are associated with the development of AD.

And of course, lead a mentally stimulating life.

Some experts have even suggested that if you can delay the development of AD by 7 years, you would literally "cure" it because we'd all die of something else!

My mother was physically active, worked at the Senior center, was a "Mall Walker" with the seniors, did her own yard work and shrub trimming, shoveled her own driveway, got on the roof at times to replace shingles, attended church weekly, loved to read & crafting & trivia & bingo, weighed maybe 115 pounds, ate lots of fruit & vegetables, never drank or smoked. Four years ago she had to go into assisted living, beginnings of Alzheimers/dementia. She will be 91 next month, is blind (but still feeds herself at the table), is in a wheelchair but can walk assisted, heeds help with most personal tasks. She did everything right. So much for this theory.......

The problem is that this theory is not able to take into account "what we don't know that we don't know." Besides these suggestions, there are other suggestions based on different variables that may not be our individual choice such as electromagnetic fields that interfere with our body's electricity without our awareness and many times without our power to stop them... Anything that subtracts from our body's ability to produce energy to sustain our health, leaves us more vulnerable to diseases. On the other hand, what helps us produce optimal energy (exercising, eating nutritious (non-toxic) foods, exercising our brain by learning new things that create new pathways, eliminating negative emotions from our subconscious
programming and replacing them with positive thinking and peace of mind, etc.; all can increase our odds of keeping our mental faculties functioning well until the end of life. This article has some of the real answers. Unfortunately, it does not have all of the answers. That said, we are still on the right track.

Reagan had it and he was fit, exercised, did not have Diabetes but his thinking was impaired from
about 1973 until his death.

People - please look up The Primal Solution or Paleo Diet.  This grain and more grain and dairy is incorrect for our bodies that have not yet evolved enough to deal with it.

Check out the Newport interviews on youtube. Vitamin D is certainly plays a very critical part in the prevention of Alzheimer's.

Doesn't bode well for those that are unemployed. My memory was tops until about 3 months after I lost my high concentration job. Reading books, etc, doesn't do it.

Writing sounds interesting, although now that I'm disabled, there isn't much to write about that isn't kind of depressing. Right now, I'm concentrating on trying to get out of the house, disability has similarities to geriatric issues, like being housebound. I thought reading much political stuff online would help, but it didn't, the brain is slowly dissolving.
