Piers Morgan 'Knew About Phone Tapping'

Huffington Post UK   First Posted: 27/07/11 08:12 BST Updated: 25/09/11 11:12 BST

Piers Morgan has come under pressure after a recording emerged of him apparently admitting to knowledge of phone hacking during his time editing the Daily Mirror.

During an appearance on the BBC’s Desert Island Disks in 2009 Piers Morgan admits to presenter Kirsty Young he has knowledge of phone tapping and using “third parties” to get stories. He said: “I make no pretence about the stuff we used to do.”

The transcript of the exchange is below.

Young: And what about this nice middle class boy who would have to be dealing with, I mean, essentially people who rake through bins for a living, people who tap people’s phones, people who take secret photographs and do all that very nasty down in the gutter stuff?

Morgan: Yeah.. Well to be honest let’s put that in perspective as well, not a lot of that went on.

Presenter: Really?

Morgan: A lot of it was done by third parties rather than the staff themselves. That’s not to defend it because obviously you were running the results of their work. I’m quite happy to be parked in the corner as tabloid beast and to have to sit here defending all these things I used to get up to. I make no pretence about the stuff we used to do. I simply say the net of people doing it was very wide and certainly encompassed the high and low end of the newspaper market.

The CNN host has become a top target in the phone hacking scandal, with multiple reports accusing him of having knowledge of hacking while he was editor of the Daily Mirror from 1995 to 2004. A former Mirror journalist, James Hipwell, told the Independent that the practice was "endemic" and that it was "inconceivable" that Morgan did not know about it.

Morgan has vociferously denied every single charge. In one tweet, he wrote, "I've never hacked a phone, told anyone to hack a phone, or published any stories based on the hacking of a phone." He has also noted that Hipwell was jailed for manipulating the stock market and calling him a far from credible witness. He also had a scalding exchange with an MP who inaccurately said that he admitted to employing the practice in his memoirs.

However, the recording has come to light after news on Tuesday that the Daily Mirror, the paper Morgan formerly edited, has launched an internal review into phone hacking.

An offshoot of this news about Piers Morgan's knowledge or not of the phone hacking by the Mirror when he was Editor is how the suspicions affect how one views this man. From English newspapers, I know that Morgan got a British Press award for "Scoop of the Year." The information about the affair between the England Team Swedish manager and his Swedish girlfriend was obtained by hacking their mobile phones. It was to Morgan's good fortune that the Mirror had on hand a half-Swedish staff member who could translate the voicemail messages for the baffled hackers. Morgan disclaimed any knowledge of hacking at the newspaper he was Editor of at the time. He must have been asleep at the wheel. But he did admit to British newspapers that he knew of the little "thingy" of a 4-digit code to access others' voicemail. He got an award for a story obtained by hacking. This all came back to me the other night when I saw TV rerun of an event hosted by Piers Morgan in London a couple of years ago. It was a special show honoring Susan Boyle and presenting her with a platinum record for her 1,000,000 album sales. I had to switch to another channel. It made me squeamish to watch this simpering, smarmy, self-important man smirking in my living room. Just a whiff of impropriety is all it takes.

In britain he would be expected to resign. Having fled to america for a job, he wants to bluff it out. CNN is embarrassed and has to support him until it is clearly a disaster. He should resign, CNN should suspend him, let him vacate the spot and let an american work here. The brit accent is all over the place now, and on american news channels as though they have some inside knowledge when in fact they have less knowledge. In commercials, voice overs, news and financial cable, the girls are even pushing out the american dumb blonds. Let Morgan go back Wales and sing to the sheep

Another example of Piers arrogance: During the AGT quarter final results show, After the "little People" were eliminated, Piers stood up and applauded sarcastically and appauded himself as to how right he was about their lack of talent. This is all because he did not agree with Howie and Sharon's decisions on the act. When I listen to Piers on CNN, it is like reading a telegram, short, curt and not in complete sentences. And that facial expression? like there is a dead fish in front of him.

He is such a letdown after Larry King. Granted, not everyone liked Larry King but he was fair and he did NOT invoke his own opinion into heavy political discussions not did he play favorites, left OR right. Piers? He's so obviously biased and anti-American policy on so many things. So obvious he's a lib and only treats lib views fairly. I'm sick of foreign celebrities coming to this country to make a few million and then knocking the hell out of it and our system of capitalism. It's what brought them here in the first place. So take your millions and leave.

Good grief, Charlie Brown, it's the way they do "journalistic" business in the UK...not just in Murdoch's empire. Don't go all righteous when it's part of the culture.

It's wrong, it's an invasion of privacy, it's lots of heinous things, but to lynch Murdoch on the pittard when everybody's doing it is disingenious.

How 'bout we examine media outlets everywhere and clean them up? Would be nice but the media and "journalists" have welcomed BEING the story so much (do you read the Washington Post?) that objectivity is long gone because nothing is about truth anymore; it's about celebrity.

LMAO...Need I say more?

I am amazed that the Huffington Post would actually write something "negative" about a liberal based reporter. But then again, it was burried on one of the back pages. If this were someone from one from Murdoch's organization they would have it on the front page with huge scandalous heallines. It appears that reporters, no matter what their employer's political preference are nothing more than yellow journalists.

Mr. Hipwell was convicted for doing the same thing Piers did. Owning stock the paper they both worked at manipulated with its reporting. So if Hipwell has no credibility, than niether has Piers, and he's more the suspect for not having explained his own position!

Well, why are you surprised? They gave the ex-governor of New York state, who was involved with prostitution over state lines, a show of his own on CNN.
02:26 AM on 07/29/2011
Actually, I wouldn't be surprised. I'm more surprised that you think having sex over state lines with a consenting adult is a crime. It's not. But the way you worded it makes it sound that way. Prostitution is illegal in most states, except areas of Nevada, where its quite a profitable and risky business.

I think Americans have a weird fascination for British and Aussie accented pitch men, selling us junk. Lets face it, today's news is junk.

Why are our airwaves being inundated with the British. We certainly have plenty of talented Americans who could do a better job acting and hosting our TV programs.

HEY, I've been saying this for years. Tina Brown at Newsweek, before that New Yorker, and Vanity Fair, Anna Wintour has destroyed VOGUE, That idiot at CNBC and Piers to name a FEW of the higher profile ones.

WE NEED AMERICANS running these magazines and TV programs. Look at VOGUE - EVERYTHING IN IT IS BRITISH!! Month after month, her friends, her pals in London, her photogs, her models, her articles are about Brits ---GO AWAY!!!

PUT AMERICANS BACK WHERE THEY BELONG - SEND BRITS HOME!!
