Tory Leader In Europe Advises Activists To 'Spend A Penny' On Chris Huhne's Book

Liberal Democrat ministers used their conference to hurl insults at their Conservative coalition partners, but the Tories have by and large resisted the temptation to retaliate in Manchester.

However the current crisis in the eurozone proved too much of temptation for Martin Callanan, the leader of the Conservative Party in Europe.

Addressing delegates on Wednesday, the MEP reminded delegates of energy secretary Chris Huhne's pro-euro book 'Both Sides of the Coin: The Arguments for the Euro and European Monetary Union'.

To laughter he said Huhne warned in the book that "eurosceptics constantly underestimated the competence of Europeans and their ability to organise things properly".

He noted that while a new copy would set them back £99, used copies were available for just 1p on Amazon.

"I wouldn't recommend that you spend a penny on it," he said. But then added: "Maybe spending a penny on it is exactly what it deserves."
