Some Endangered Species Should Be Allowed To Die Out, Conservationist Survey Says

Tiger

Species losing their fight for survival should be left to become extinct, if it means having resources free for other animals and plants, a survey of professional conservationists has found.

Experts are beginning to resign themselves to the idea that certain animals and plants are just too difficult to save.

A majority of the 583 experts surveyed by an academic at York University believe the time has come to consider shifting efforts away from endangered species such as pandas and tigers, to concentrate on others that have more chance of flourishing in the wild.

Questions have been raised in recent years as to whether resources on certain endangered animals could have been better spent elsewhere. The Canadian government has spent millions trying to rescue the Atlantic Salmon while the Chinese government has also poured money into trying to breed Giant Pandas, with little success.

Particularly where the loss of habitat is almost inevitable, there are serious doubts as to whether it is worth spending money trying to keep numbers up artificially, which is the case with famous endangered species - pandas and tigers. This change of heart comes in the wake of the World Bank pledging about $100 m exclusively to save the wild tiger, a generous figure that came under criticism.

Dr Murray Rudd, an environmental economist at York University, carried out the study published in Conservation Biology. He concluded that scientists now are facing the challenge in conservation is to know "what's beyond help and what's not".

There is plenty of wildlife habitat for pandas and tigers without too many humans (but long live pretty girls and all the types of humans responsible for them!)

Really? Exactly where is this habitat. Please be specific.
04:37 AM on 11/28/2011
Nowhere. I said "without too many humans" I was being hypothetical. No need to reply since you just wanted to be rude in your complete ignorance of what I said.

And who makes the decision of which animal is more important to this world than the other? Nature has designed such wonderful systems that are so interrelated and dependent upon all aspects of those systems. You remove one and domino effects occur from there. Man will never be able to match what nature has accomplished and to say now that we have destroyed the habitat of some we should no longer work to try to correct what we have done is assinine.

If you don't like what is happening DO something about it, don't just complain that the people who ARE trying to do something aren't doing enough.

First off, you need to re-read my post rather than just sitting around and responding to thousands of posts. I did not complain "that the people who are trying to do somethign aren't doing enough". I simply asked how will be the one to make the decision of which species in mother nature's grand interwoven scheme should not be saved when we as humans are the reason they are disappearing. As for my not liking something and doing something about it rather than simply complaining, kindly be advised that I do not just sit around and just complain. I am a sole practicioner lawyer who is broke because 3/4s of my practice involves providing pro bono (free) work for animals and poor persons, I am working on finishing a biology degree so I can leave law and work solely for the animals and the environment, all of my vacations are working vacations (wherein much of my time is spent working with scientists who are trying to make a difference), and I do extensive feral cat rescue, spay/neutering from my own pocket. The vast majority of my life is DOING something!! When you are in the same position than you can attempt to chastise me but until then read the posts before you just respond.

Oh so it all boils down to money then???! nothing else matters... NICE! let the Tiger die, let the Lion Die let every natural wild animal die just because of money! I say let the these disgraceful humans who suggest this get the hell out of this world! they call themselves 'conservationists' ??!! fancy titles ... they are nothing but a bunch of losers. Humans are the reason that most of these animals have reached extinction - their greed does not end - animals being murdered everywhere for the whims and fancies of destructive humans. WE have a duty as humans to protect Nature! and all these animals are part of the natural world ! nothing is more shameful and disgraceful ... to even thinking about such thing is a betrayal. Haven't humans damaged the world enough already? we are criminals if we allow the Tigers and other endangered animals disappear from our lives. Thats what this suggests.

So what are YOU doing about it? Don't just sit around and talk, go raise more money for conservation. Or study biology and become a conservation biologist yourself. Sitting around whining isn't going to accomplish anything.

The great tyranny of low expectations is reflected in this article. We have a moral and ethical duty to conserve all of nature, not just the convenient parts. Money is a myth, just numbers in a computer. Tigers and pandas are real, they feel and love, and we are fools if we let them go extinct.

"We have a moral and ethical duty to conserve all of nature, not just the convenient parts." If you truly believed that, you'd be tearing down the building you now live in, planting a nice grove of trees where it once stood, and moving off to the forest to happily forage for berries. Can you give us a progress report?

If money is a myth what did you use to buy your lunch today?
02:33 PM on 11/10/2011
Well then i guess we all know where this will lead how long untill all the other animals have died out and only humans remain how long before the money grabbing self centered bureaucrats decide that we are expendable before we become drains on resources ourselves, how long before the hard working guy who has just enough to get by is aloud to die out just like the tigers, before we ourselves become extinct its a slippery slope, we take that path and choose to stop fighting for a creature that is dying out because of us, what do we become and how long before we are no longer human Save the tigers and Panda's and we may just save ourselves

my apologies for the second post had problem posting the first comment didn't realize it had posted

If this is truly about money then once all the beautiful animals have died out and there is nothing left but humanity the money grabbing selfish gits who are suggesting this will turn on their own kind i mean if they don't want to waste money on saving a species then why would they want to waste money on the poorer humans ones who work as hard as they can and yet it is not enough they will come along and say that unless they can pay for things such as healthcare they are a waste of resources and how long then will it be before each of us is allowed to die out because we are not considered good enough to save it's a slippery slope save the tigers and panda's and we may just save humanity

I'd tell you all about me if you were my friend.

Great idea! Lets start with eliminating humans. That would save the most species.

No. You have completely missed my point. The animals whom these scientists are advocating abandoning - did not volunteer either.

However, my initial post is entirely accurate and logical, and would be a more effective implementation of the scientists asinine plan. For IF humans were eliminated from the face of the earth then the current extinction event, being entirely man made, would end.

What? NO! Just look at that magnificent tiger in the photo. Nobody's lovable pussycat, but a true wonder of nature and fine if left alone in his natural habitat. Same goes for many other species, Human intrusion makes them expendable. Are these scientists really talking about "the laws of nature?" Fine on one hand, on the other, look at all the species already lost to us.

It would be a shame to loose the tigers.

Life's too imprtant to be taken seriously.

Yes, they might eat someone.

But seriously, it would be a huge shame to lose them.
