Exeter University Apologises After Sick Rape 'Joke' Printed In Student 'Shag Mag'

Huffington Post UK   First Posted: 29/11/2011 09:33 Updated: 29/11/2011 15:13

An Exeter University society has apologised after provoking outrage when it printed a sick rape "joke" in a leaflet dubbed the "shag mag" to promote a safe sex student ball.

The joke estimated the number of calories a man could burn off by stripping a girl naked without her consent and has been described as "beyond ugly". It was part of a two-page spread which detailed the energy spent on sexual practices.

The booklet is given out with every ticket purchased by students for the Safer Sex Ball, run by Exeter's RAG society. The charity event is supposed to highlight the importance of using condoms but has raised concerns the ball instead promotes promiscuity. Party-goers, which can number in their thousands, adhere to a dress code where less is considered more and are handed free condoms by the society.

The booklet has now been withdrawn after the joke incited numerous complaints from students and will be reprinted without the "gag", the Western Morning News reported.

Sophie Odgers-Roe, the Guild's Racial Equality Representative, told University website Xmedia she was "horrified" by the joke.

She said: "When I saw it, I was shocked, horrified and outraged. I just can't believe the sheer audacity of it."

Roe is now campaigning for an independent examination of all publications before they are allowed to go to print, to avoid a repeat.

Yvonne Traynor, chief executive of the Rape Crisis support centre, said the joke should an "insensitive lack of intelligence by the author".

"It is appalling that in these times when one in four women is suffering from sexual violence a student has no grasp of the serious consequences of a statement like this. Perhaps we should ask how many calories a man could burn off each day in prison when they are convicted of attacking women", she told the Huffington Post.

"Someone should be accountable for initiating this statement and printing it and that person needs serious counselling!"

Students took to Twitter to condemn the joke, with one saying it was "incredibly insensitive".

Research pupil Natalie Garrett added it was "beyond ugly" and demanded: "What message are you trying to send to undergraduates? Lead by example."

A spokesperson for the university's students' guild said:

"RAG would like to apologise unreservedly for any offence caused by an unacceptable comment made in the magazine. RAG does not condone abuse in any way, shape or form and we’re deeply sorry that this was allowed to be published.

"In addition, the Students’ Guild would like to sincerely apologise for not picking this matter up at the proofing stage and for not removing it from publication. An investigation is underway, looking at how this happened and ensuring that nothing like this happens again.

"All copies of the magazine have been removed and new copies are being reprinted."

"Shocked, horrified and outraged"

Yup, all the ingredients of a good joke.

Reading the board below, it is apparent that the ladies have a problem with rape, while a lot of the male posters do not. So, it's OK, guys, a horrific violation of a woman's body is "insensitive". Personally, I would say barbaric. As a man with a wife and daughter, I think our job is to protect our women. If we make rape a problem for men, things might change. Get rid of the "I thought she wanted it really" defence because if she does want it, there is no doubt. If you don't understand that, men, burn your porn mags and talk to mummy until you do. It's time men started taking responsibility for their balls instead of using them as an excuse.

I think one of the main points being missed here is that this ball raises thousands of pounds for charity each year as well as a huge amount of awareness about some important issues and an incredibly worthy cause. Yes, the joke was insensitive and should not have been printed but I think that everyone has accepted that. The focus should not be on the one mistake made, but the hours of hard work that these young people manage to fit in alongside their studies to raise thousands of pounds for charity. No one can argue that comment was made deliberately and it is unfortunate it was not caught at an earlier date but I for one believe that we are also young once, we all make mistakes, let's learn from them. And let's support these students from RAG (The Raising and Giving Society) who are working to solve the situation, do the right thing and raise money for charity.

''Raising awareness'' It would be good if it could be measured, how much ''awareness'' was ''raised.''

Are all thee reality shows, diet programs, magazine articles, public health info, food labelling raising awareness about obesity? But its' been on the increase for decades and so have many of healthy eating efforts.

People have awareness - then self-abuse. Like students drinking. They knowingly engage in self-harm. Very popular activity self-harming. To be expected in a tattooing, piercing, depressed society.

Maybe you can post us with info about your awareness being raised if you ever notice it happening.

Maybe Exeter students could have an event to raise awareness about tired cultural cliches being employed by the unimaginative young. Surely a problem we should address.

Anastasia Richardson "women really do have their drinks spiked with rohypnol"
Now, I'm not wishing to get involved in any debate about rape per se, but in the interest of females being better informed - no, women really don't have their drinks spiked with Rohypnol, or any other drugs for that matter. Or, at least such 'drug facilitated' rape is incredibly rare. The Rohypnol legend is just that - a false urban myth, with social and media origins. Almost exclusively, alleged victims of drug spiking are found to have been intoxicated with alcohol alone, or occasionally their own prescription or recreational drugs. Of course, drink spiking with additional alcohol has been going on since fermentation was discovered. This is not to excuse in any way, opportunistic predatory sexual attention, but false beliefs don't help.

Your post is absolutely false. 100% false.

Women should be VERY careful with their drinks, especially in bars with strangers.

There have been several very high profile cases where women were slipped Rohypnol in drinks and woke up (groggily) to being raped.

Why lie about it, for goodness sakes!!!

Actually no. It's quite correct. 100% quite correct. Being angry at something isn't the same as it being false. 100% false.

Obviously they have nothing better to do - EXCEPT howl that their fees are going up.

10:37 PM on 11/29/2011
Yes I am and have done all my working life, my parents funded mine as both of them worked all their lives.

a safe sex 'ball' where they didn't get that a rape joke was offensive. Education is a wonderful thing - not!

Although it has been a few years since I was at uni, I sometimes wonder if time spent at university is a period of thought, reflection and learning or just passing exams.

"Shocked, horrified and outraged"

I'm afraid Ms Odgers=Roe needs to get out in the real world and she may actually come face to face with things that are truly shocking, horrific and outrageous. I would suggest that this joke was merely immature, slightly in bad taste and not particuarly funny. Of course it should not have been published but in the grand scheme of things is more to be oitied than scorned. No doubt the PC Brigade will claim it encourages men to rape ugly women as a way to lose weight. However, it is just a stupid joke by a stupid student that was not spotted. The whole university seems to have begged for forgiveness. Time to move on I think. On the other hand could we be supplied with a list os subjects we are allowed to laugh at

You need to have another look at your reaction to this one, it's way off. It's got nothing to do with PC, it's about the acceptability of sexual violence
09:12 PM on 11/29/2011
Thats why we have thought processes in place, it allows the judgement between being able to laugh at a joke but unable to go out to commit sexual violence just because we read a joke in a stupid mag
02:07 PM on 11/29/2011
It was a joke, many jokes are in bad taste, so what, get over it. I'm over the moon these people have little more to complain about in their lives than how PC some student rag is, this is whats wrong with this country, try growing a pair and pass it off for what it is, nothing.

This would not have happened when I was at University, safe sex was no sex. The idea of a safe sex ball may in fact have been a good one.

Sex sells and these days universities are very much in the business of selling themselves as extended holiday camps where you can also get a degree.
