Unison Threatens Legal Action Over Jeremy Clarkson's 'Outrageous' Comments

Jeremy Clarkson

Public sector union Unison is considering taking legal action against Jeremy Clarkson after he said people who went out on strike "should be shot".

The BBC was forced to apologise after the Top Gear presenter joked that it was unfair for people in the public sector with "gilt edge pensions" to stage a walkout "when the rest of us have to work for a living".

"I'd have them all shot." he said. "I'd take them outside and execute them in front of their families."

Dave Prentis, Unison's general secretary, said: “Clarkson’s comments on the One Show were totally outrageous, and they cannot be tolerated.

"We are seeking urgent legal advice about what further action we can take against him and the BBC, and whether or not his comments should be referred to the police."

"An apology is not enough - we are calling on the BBC to sack Jeremy Clarkson immediately. Such disgusting statements have no place on our TV screens."

David Cameron said Clarkson's comments were "silly" but he fell short of condemning the presenter who is a friend of his.

Speaking on ITV's 'This Morning' programme on Thursday, the prime minster said: "It's obviously a silly thing to say. I'm sure he did not mean that."

Clarkson is part of the so-called 'Chipping Norton set' of friends centered around Cameron's Oxfordshire constituency that also included former News of the World editor Rebekah Brooks.

Karen Jennings, Unison assistant general secretary, told Sky News that Clarkson's comments were "almost inciting anger and hate towards public sector workers" and called for Cameron to go further in his condemnation.

"The prime minister has a record on this, he does seem to stand by his friends in the face of criticisms of what they do or what they say," she said.

Jon Trickett MP, Labour's shadow minister for the Cabinet Office, had called for the prime minister to "disassociate" himself from the remarks made by Clarkson.

"No one wants these strikes but most of today's strikers are mums, not militants. Clarkson should apologise. And the prime minister should make clear he disassociates himself from the distasteful remarks uttered by one of his friends," he said on Wednesday night.

Just how many comments do you remove in this obsession with pretending to be able to keep some moral high ground

What really suprises me about the whole thing is you would think being members of a joke union they would have a bit of a sense of humour

Why is everyone so surprised? The BBC knew they were asking for trouble when they invited him on the show.

He is an old but still repressed adolecent, with the sense of humour to go with it. Say something and shock the grownups syndrome.

Jeremy gave me a good laugh, which I think is what he intended. What saddened me was the cringing, crawling reaction of his overly "politically correct" TV hosts. By the way, Jeremy, as an ex professional soldier, I reckon I did earn my living (and my pension) and if you want to know what the real world is really like then pull up a sandbag "son" and I will tell you a tale or two.........

Unison threatens legal action, in whose name? Has Dave Prentis consulted the membership about squandering thousands on a doomed-to-failure ego-trip? On second thoughts if he wants to be the next Arthur Scargill let him get on with it.

Clarkson was joking. Does nobody have any sense of humour anymore? He does have a good point about how lucky public sector workers are. The moaners should try living in the real world where the threat of redundancy hangs over people, no sick pay or pensions and difficult working conditions. I work for the NHS and have done for many years and it is a very good organisation to work for. I get paid when Im ill and get 6 weeks holiday a year oh yes and the tax payer tops up my pension for me. Im not complaining. The country is in debt and we all need to do our bit to sort it out. Stop moaning and get on with the jobs that you are paid well to do. I am.

The Trots have crawled out from under their rocks and are hissing mad. 5000 complained to the BBC to Clarkson. If they did, their ratings would plummet faster than the UK under Labour!

Clarkson is Clarkson, which is why we love him. Clarkson for Prime Minister!

Weather you like or dislike Clarkson, he's a comedian, the world would probably have less strikes, and need for guilt pension for that matter, if everyone could just have a sense of humor.

After that Unison woman on BBC news this lunchtime compared Clarkson's comments with those of Colonel Gadaffi when he said he would shoot the Libyan protesters, and that her members were afraid to leave their houses (implying this was the same as the Libyans) the words plot and lost sprang to mind.
We all know that Clarkson shoots his mouth off for effect, you'd think some of his targets would make it more difficult to score a hit.
If that is in bad taste then so is the vitriol that has been poured on the 95% of us people who work for banks but had nothing to do with the financial crisis. Who is fighting our corner?

The man has always disliked us, he's not a very nice person when it comes to the rest off the people in our Country, but never mind this will just lose him some more watchers. Saddam would have been happy with this one, he enjoyed excecuting people in front of there families or was he only joking aswell?
02:11 AM on 12/02/2011
You've made a very bad point. Even people who hate Jeremy Clarkson know that it was a joke whether funny or not. Comparing him to Saddam Hussein is, quite frankly, ludicrous.

Legal action for having an opinion, what next?
