"Record numbers" of aliens and UFO sightings have been reported in the mystical county of Somerset, after a Freedom of Information request by the Somerset Gazette showed 27 calls have been made in the past five years.

Calls such as the one made on 23 August 2011: "Caller is stuck in hospital with aliens and Charlie Kray" have a hoax quality about them, but other reports have undoubtedly been made in good faith.

Somerset has a history of other-worldly activity, with witchyWookey Hole and prehistoric Cheddar Gorge prompting extraterrestrial speculation.

However the calls made to police concerning UFO sightings in Somerset show a more in-depth portrait. Genuine UFO sightings have to be wheedled from what police described as "calls for help." During August 2009 calls recorded by police show a series of disturbing reports:

16 August 2009: "Caller advised they are the recognised son of God on this earth and on alien planets"

17 August 2009: "Caller advised they have powers to rule the world and govern religion and aliens"

And a more imaginative report on 5 April 2010 "Caller reporting UFOs in front room. Their dog has drawn pictures on the window and saints are looking through the window"

There have been no UFO sightings in Somerset during the winter months, when the sky is much darker. Somerset UFO's hit the headlines in 2009 when a cylindrical object spotted above Brean caravan park sparked fierce debate online.

Chief Inspector Rowland told the Somerset Gazette: "Sadly, there are a number of people who think it is amusing to ring the emergency services and make a hoax call.

"In making these calls there is a risk that they stop genuine callers who are in distress and require our help from reaching us.

"We are also very aware that some of the calls that may seem bizarre mask an underlying need from the caller.

"Our staff are trained to deal with this sensitively and to provide any necessary support.

"This Christmas I would urge people to think about the call handlers who will be working through the festive season to help keep the people of Avon and Somerset safe. Please only call 999 in a genuine emergency and remember to use our 101 non-emergency number for all other calls to us."

What a silly item, I started to read it out of interest even though I dont believe in Aliens. By the 2nd paragraph I could see where the item was headed. What a waste of space. (excuse pun)

Try to get information about ufo's if you are a member of the U.S. Military. Good luck. I spoke to someone that was at Bentwaters during the sightings in the UK. He said the landing was "preplanned" and cameras (16 MM) with "Lightalls" ( powerfull high intensity gas powered generated lighting systems) set up to photograph the landing in advance. He said there were dozens of military personnel there in advance of the landing. The object came over the trees and looked small ( about a foot in diameter) and then expanded in an instant to 40 to 50 feet in diameter. There was amazement by the witnesses but no sign of panic or fear. Someone in the audience said "here it comes" as if they knew it was on its way. What is going on?

I deffinatly saw something in the sky in broard daylight in the diatance myself once in the 60's, but people need to realise a UFO is just that an Unidentified Flying Object which doesn't mean what you are seeing is from outer space. Possibly what I saw was a natural optical illusion with a weather balloon as in hindsight the design was a bit 60's high tech, in the same way a 60's car or even fishing trawler would have angles etc that now identified it to being part of that era and it seems a bit hard to believe that some advanced life form from another galaxy that has the technology to get here would have done it in the 1960's in 1960's earth looking technology I'd off thought they would have been flying around in something a lot more high tech looking in comparrison?

Most are what you say but when responsible people like jet pilots make a report of a flying object thousands of feet long or larger than a couple of aircraft carriers I think we should pay attention to these reports.
When UFOs hover over a US ICBM missile base and somehow mess with the electronics of the launching systems we need to pay attention.
Professor Hyneck the last overseeer of the US AF Project Blue Book said it wasn't the 98% of UFOs reported but the 2% that just couldn't be explained. He went into the program a skeptic and he left it no longer a skeptic.

It's possible that some of the daytime sightings like the one over the protesters in Russia could be surveillance drones used by police to observe crowds. These are being developed and used in several major cities. I would guess many are hoaxes perpetrated by local pranksters, as it is fairly easy these days to create something that can hover or glide on air currents to which one can also attach lights. In my childhood days, the 60s, as the UFO phenomenon was being prominently featured in LIFE magazine, I witnessed a strange event from my backyard. My family and I watched for several minutes as a "silent", bright glowing object appeared from over the wooded trees several hundred yds away, about 3-400 ft in the air, and then observed it hover briefly over the small valley below our neighborhood. We watched as the object appeared to flash and sort of "melt". Found out later that someone a few blocks away had taken a piece of cardboard, attached a lit candle to it, secured it beneath a large plastic dry cleaning bag and launched. A light breeze carried it to where we watched it melt and crash. And that was well before the existence of the sophisticated electronics and RC hobby aircraft available today that could easily be used to create an unexplained sighting. I'm not saying I don't believe there could be ET aircraft out there, I just haven't seen convincing proof in my lifetime-not yet at least.

If we sat down and thought about it with a clear mind, it is quite disturbing really but what is space, we are taught everything has a beginning and a end...but space.....!!! Anyway I digress, when I lived in Essex our local toy plane flying club (forgot it's name), had a great selection of ufos....which no doubt they took great pleasure in flying in the locality at night...!!!

THESE SIGHTINGS ARE PROBABLY HOT AIR CHINESE LANTERNS THAT YOU CAN BUY AND LIGHT. POUND STRETCHERS HAVE GOT THEM. :-) THEY THEN FLOAT UP INTO SKY AND WILL STAY ALIGHT FOR 20 MINUTES BEFORE THEY BURN OUT....
