Stephen Lawrence was buried in Jamaica because his family feared his grave would be desecrated if it was in the UK, his mother has revealed.

Doreen Lawrence told the BBC's Panorama programme she felt Britain did not deserve to have her son buried there.

She said: "I am really pleased I have buried him here, because had he been buried in the UK his grave would have been desecrated so many times.

"Here nobody knows where he is. Then again, I don't think the country deserves to have his body there anyway because they took his life.

"I think it's still the best thing we did, that we brought him here so he can be next to his great-grandmother so she can look after him."

The grave, which is in a secret location, bears a picture of her murdered son which will soon be replaced because it is fading, Mrs Lawrence said.

In the programme Mrs Lawrence looked through pictures of Stephen as a child and said she is protective of his memory.

"I don't like the idea of too many photos of Stephen being out. I just think everybody seems to want to have photos of him and I just think 'no'.

"The one is enough, that way you have some control."

Mrs Lawrence could also be seen looking at Stephen's cap and jumper, complete with badges, from when he was a cub and scout.

She also leafed through some of his writings but said she could not bring herself to read them.

"I came across this. He did it on April 7, 15 days before his died he did it.

"I can't read it, I find it difficult, when I look at what he could achieve. I'm not ready to read this yet."

So sad to read the statement of Doreen Lawrence: when she states that "Britain doesn't deserve to have Stephen buried there." Most people in Britain totally abhor the tragic Killing of Stephen; and the fact that it has taken the police so long to bring at least two of those responsible to justice;or at least a kind of justice. But I cannot understand this statement by Doreen. I can understand her not wanting Stephen buried here on the basis that his grave might be vandalized; and that really would have been appalling; but why say Britain does not deserve to have her son buried here: what have the vast decent majority of British people done to deserve such a sweeping statement? Please do not take this as in any way critical of Mrs. Lawrence, I have the up-most respect for her and her family in the dignified manner in which she has responded to many media interviews. Had Stephen lived he would have been a great asset to Britain and I personally would have been so proud to have had him living in Britain; I believe he would have contributed something special in whatever field of work he chose; he just seemed that kind of guy.Britain did not take the life of Stephen Lawrence: it was that very small minority of inhuman thugs who are totally at odds with the rest of us who were responsible

God Bless to Mrs Lawrence and her Family
God Bless Stephen.

A tragic loss. Who can blame her for feeling this way? The murderers have been brought to justice, but that won`t bring Stephen Lawrence back.

You're wrong.
Eltham is NOT a nasty place at all. Quite the opposite.
The people in your clip did nothing wrong.
They arrived in Eltham to prevent looting.
They were NOT local people. I have lived in Eltham for nearly fifty years and have never seen trouble of any kind.
