Kimberley Hainey, who murdered her son

A woman who murdered her toddler son and concealed his body has been jailed for life and told she must serve a minimum of 15 years.

Kimberley Hainey, 37, was found guilty on Thursday by a majority verdict last month of murdering her son Declan at a flat in Bruce Road, Paisley, Renfrewshire.

She was also convicted of failing to report Declan's death to police or other authorities and of concealing his body at the flat.

At the High Court in Glasgow, she was handed the life sentence and told she will spend a minimum of 15 years behind bars.

Hainey forced the toddler to live in squalor, pictures released on Wednesday revealed.

Declan's body was found at the family home in 2010 but experts said he had been dead for several months. The images, released by prosecutors, show the flat overflowing with debris and waste. Mouldy milk bottles and empty food packets litter the floor, punctuated only by soft toys and children's clothes. An abandoned buggy stands redundant in a corner, surrounded by old towels and plastic bags.

One picture shows a travel cot or playpen filled with empty plastic bottles, while another shows a sofa obscured by an old duvet and cans.

The incident was described as "harrowing and distressing" by police officers, after the toddler's corpse was discovered at the flat on 30 March. When he was found, he would have been nearly two. The cause of Declan's death is still unknown but reports suggest he was last seen alive when he was 15 months old.

When are children going to be given proper protection from abusive parents? The country is ever on the alert to 'stranger danger' yet children are far more likely to be assaulted by a family member. Domestic violence is so rife that a child a week is murdered by parents or guardians, and this is the tip of the iceberg of those who are abused. Yet there is this cosy fantasy of wonderful mothers, in particular, who would do anything to protect their children and obviously would never harm them. Wake up and read the headlines, children need better protection.

Rather than give a life sentence, what about the American system - a needle in the arm - not upsetting to administer. This provides a peaceful death - cuts the prison expenditure and punishes those deserving, beyond any doubt, with the death sentence. Not an advocate of a cruel death sentence, think of their HRs! (also think about those who have to watch/administer those who hang etc.) We should bring the death penalty back for murder, once proven - look at the witchcraft cases. Why is this happening in UK? Children are so vulnerable - we must try to protect them somehow - social services must be totally incompetent to see yet another case hitting the news. How did this case slip through the net?

The death penalty doesn't cut prison expenditure - look at the figures.

The death penalty in the USA costs more than a life sentence as the court and appeal costs are extremely high.
When on death row the convicted person is automatically put through a system of appeals which in and of itself has been described as a form of torture and is very expensive.

Thanks Everymonde for explaining that.

The fact is that the death penalty doesn't cut costs nor does it act as a deterrent. Time and again the figures prove this.

However what the death penalty does do is run the risk of executing innocent people. This is why the majority of people in the UK are strongly opposed to it.

Come on... this story is incomplete... the burning question is .... WHY ?????. In any event she murdered a little defenseless toddler who depended on her, bring back capital punishment. Jail too good for these types.

15 years is not LIFE! Bet she only serves a fraction of it when some other socially isolated judge takes pity or political pressure to ease the pressure on the prison system dictates her expensive early release with identity change and 24-hour protection.

The travesty of the so called life sentance. This why criminals laugh at the British legal system. Try USA law and the death penalty. After our serious crimainals get out they get a change in identity. The victims get a grave if they are lucky. If beyond doubt, string em up. End of and closure for the bereved. Put it like this, if your daughter was murdered, what would you like done about it. Nice cell or the long drop?

There's no such thing as beyond doubt.

And the USA has more violent crime than any other western nation. Shows what the death penalty can achieve.

Exactly Andrew. This poor woman was obviously in great distress, probably very ill. Why did nobody notice what was going on? This baby would still be alive now if more people had cared.

It doesn't get much worse than the murder of a child.

I really do think that anyone who murders a child should be given the death penalty.
