Lord Astor, Stepfather To Samantha Cameron, Criticises HS2 Decision

First Posted: 12/01/12 07:16 GMT Updated: 12/01/12 07:31 GMT   PA

David Cameron is facing opposition to the Government's HS2 high-speed rail plans from within his own family - his father-in-law has warned of it "ruining the lives of thousands".

Lord Astor, a Conservative peer and stepfather of the Prime Minister's wife Samantha, has joined Tory opposition to the HS2 network given the go-ahead this week by Transport Secretary Justine Greening.

In an article for The Spectator magazine, he said the plan was backed largely by "northern Labour MPs who relish the thought of the beauty of the Chilterns being destroyed".

He said the need for the £32.7 billion scheme could be bypassed by modern communications.

"There is a perfectly viable alternative, which... would be much cheaper and faster to take effect, without destroying a whole swath of countryside, ruining the lives of thousands," he wrote.

"Have they not heard of Skype and the internet?"

He urged that Ms Greening should "compare HS2 with cheaper options and look at how those savings could be spent on other transport needs".

Amid bitter opposition from countryside campaigners and some Tory MPs, Ms Greening announced this week that more of the London-Birmingham phase of the project would go through tunnels to minimise the impact on the landscape.

The scheme will, by 2026, see 400 metre-long trains capable of holding 1,100 passengers get from London to Birmingham in just 45 minutes.

A second phase to Manchester and Leeds will be built by 2033.

"By following in the footsteps of the 19th century railway pioneers, the government is signalling its commitment to providing 21st century infrastructure and connections - laying the groundwork for long-term, sustainable economic growth.

"High Speed 2 (HS2) is a scheme to deliver hugely enhanced rail capacity and connectivity between Britain's major conurbations. It is the largest transport infrastructure investment in the UK for a generation, and, with the exception of High Speed 1 (HS1), is the first major new railway line since the Victorian era."

And who said those against fox-hunting were concerned with animal welfare----rather than sniping at hunting people, who they see as rich, or aristocratic?

How can this government allow for this sill idea to come to fruition? I thought that we were broke and still very overspent despite the cut backs. We still give a billion here and billion there to other countries who dont deserve the money. Then we have 32 billion spend announced, which as we well know is a very conservative cost, it will come in at the end for around 200 billion. Just think what we can do with this money?

When I first read about the HST2 it was said the journey-time between London to Birmingham would be 58 minutes. At the end of last week it was down to 50 minutes. By Monday it was down to 50 minutes and today it is down to 45 minutes. At this rate, journey times will be down to 0 minutes by 2026. If they can reduce the times by so much even before the line is built, there's no point in building the line as anyone who wants will only need to go to Euston, board a train, and get off and find themselves in Birmingham - all that without the train even moving!
03:02 PM on 01/12/2012
Is there really a need to get from Birmingham to London in 45 minutes? Set off earlier, lazy people. Its a grossly offensive waste of money, and would be damaging to the environment no matter how they do it. The trains would still have to be powered by electricity, which comes from power stations. Nothing is being learned by those in power.

One is totally shocked that one's Tory government is disturbing the peace of one's stately pile. I mean what did I marry my daughter off for? What's worse is that it all seems to be for those barbaric tribes north of Watford. It's simply not what one avoids paying one's taxes for.

Just like the Olympic games, Wembly Stadium and many other major projects the cost never comes in on budget. If this goes ahead the £32 billion will turn out to be nearer £150 billion. They always under state the project cost to get approval and once committed revise the figures. Why not committ trhe contractors to a fixed project cost "TODAY" with an exclusion clause for any liability outside 5%. Too much sense being suggested here I suspect.

Very good point Lady and I suspect if it does go ahead (God help us) , UK industry involvement will be absolute minimum and..it will be corrupt. This government seems to stumble from one blatant incompetence to another... but what have we got as an alternative.. Milliband and Balls ??. WE'RE DOOMED I SAY... DOOMED !!! Come in UKIP.. your time is DUE !!
06:16 PM on 01/12/2012
I agree with your sentiments. Milliband and Balls as their PR team recognise make Cameron look bloody brilliant. Yes lets give ukip a chance.

nice to see the rich getting hot under the collar for a change, whats the betting the goverment will have a rethink and try to re-route it through some part of the country where the rich nobs dont live.
03:03 PM on 01/12/2012
Yep. You wouldnt have anything like that being built in leafy Surrey.
10:56 AM on 01/12/2012
I expect we will be giving the Germans this contract as well!!
10:49 AM on 01/12/2012
It is about time these "nobs" had to put up with the problems the rest of us have.
Slap compulsary purchase orders on their properties and build the high speed line through their gardens.
I bet none of these people ever look out their windows at the beautiful countryside well not until now.
They call look out thier windows and become train spotters in future it is an interesting passtime they could also buy an anorak to wear instead of their"barbours".
11:49 AM on 01/12/2012
Whats betting if a northern line gets built none of that will have tunnels to save the countryside..!!
10:27 AM on 01/12/2012
The UK does not need this high speed train project and its not cos it ruins the lovely countryside that the vast majority of the no vote are moaning about. With internet, phones and all other tech solutions nowadays to spend £36b on getting to London 1 hour earlier is STUPID beyond belief. There are so many fantastic causes that this amount of money could be invested into British industry to permanently generate employment, not for a one off project. In any event, if it goes ahead, this government would probably award the contract to some Indian or German company they are so incompetent.

"ruining the lives of thousands". What the elite, who enjoy the green and pleasant land that has been denied to many in the UK? The destruction of the north, through mining, chemical industries, car manufacturing, motorways, shopping malls etc., benefitted the elite living in the south. at the expense of those suffering in a grossly polluted atmosphere/environment. The very fact that the north had to protect their very precious green and pleasant areas, through declaring them national parks, speaks volumes. UK needs development - it is time to put this in the south for a change; the not in my backyard brigade need to open their eyes to the needs of others.
10:52 AM on 01/12/2012
I am one of the people who live in the area.
I agree with you some of these complaining never even walk in the countryside until now. They drive down i their 4x4s on Friday and disappear again on Monday !!
Now they can spend their week ends doing a bit of trainspotting!!

The case for the HS1 was completely different, the economic benefits of Britain being connected by rail to Europe were obvious and hard to ignore. But the economic benefits of building a £37billion HS2 to win 30 min. off travel time to Birmingham are imperceptible to current rail users. Also the likelihood of the HS2 project ever being fully developed to include connections to Scotland and Manchester will ultimately depend on the viability of the line. With the Eurostar, ticket cost affordability was vital to its success. If the current increases in fares on existing networks have already made rail travel unaffordable too many, exactly who and how many people will be able to afford a ticket on a HS train to Birmingham just to save themselves half an hour? What they are not telling us is the passengers for this train do not exist?

It'll be handy for those MPs who live in the Midlands (and beyond) - and they'll be able to claim the fares back on expenses.

Oh, the passengers do exist, but I could probably count them on my fingers.

UK taxpayer to fund this rail link and pay through the nose for using it. Private profit making companies to run it ? Can anybody make any sense of that ?. Seems like another con to get public money into private bank accounts.
