A 15-year-old girl has died after being taken suddenly ill during a PE lesson.

Lily Webster, a Year 11 pupil at Stowmarket High School, was taking part in a trampolining session at Mid Suffolk Leisure Centre when she collapsed.

The ambulance service was called at 2.30pm on Monday but she was pronounced dead at the scene.

A spokesman for the East of England Ambulance Service said: "First and foremost, our thoughts are firmly with the girl's family at this tragic time.

"On arrival, the girl was found in a critical condition.

"Ambulance crews, the doctor and the critical care team from the air ambulance worked extensively to treat and stabilise the girl but following everyone's best efforts, she was pronounced dead at the scene."

Headteacher Keith Penn said the school community was "shocked and deeply saddened" by Webster's death.

“Popular, active, bright and with a very wide circle of friends, Lily will be desperately missed by students and staff at the school and all those who know her.

“All our thoughts and prayers are with her family and close friends at this time.”

A Facebook group has been set up in memory of the schoolgirl with one girl writing "The good are always taken too early sleep well lily xxx".

Another tribute said simply: "RIP Lily. Heaven has gained another Angel".

1. When does a ‘nanny state’ become so? E.g. Free education in the UK is considered a right, but chopping down trees because they are a ‘trip hazard’, as happened in Scarborough, is overzealous. Where does screening schoolchildren for health problems prior to making them take part in P.E. fall?

2. Even if exercise could be risky, bans may not always be the answer. To illustrate: A condition like haemophilia shouldn't get worse, and is not normally disabling, but it would be if a bleed occured after being rugby tackled. So avoiding rugby and other high risk sports makes sense. But with a condition like cystic fibrosis, which will likely deteriorate over time, some children might prefer to participate despite the risks, while they still could, since always hanging back to prevent exacerbation would arguably be impeding their quality of life without good reason. In such a case, perhaps the parent could sign a form saying they understand the risks but they wish their child to be allowed to take part anyway, and they don't hold the school responsible for the consequences. And maybe screening for certain disorders would be wise, i.e. ones that are treatable and/or could cause sudden death/disability; but which are not normally degenerative.

3. If Lily's death was exercise induced it could have happened anywhere, with any exercise type. Just because she collapsed at school does not in this case necessarily mean the school was responsible, or negligent.

Doing health tests on school kids...for Goodness' Sake! Let's do an allergy test before feeding our children, let's wrap them in bandages to counter any bleeding they may suffer from at any point in their lives, let's give them a permenant life-long dose of antibiotics in case they ever get poorly. Don't be ridiculous! I left school within the last 5 years and yes I didn't enjoy PE but participation levels really are only as high as the students can be bothered to make them. Some children just die suddenly which is terrible. This story mentions no underlying health conditions, therefore 'screening' poor Lily and excluding her from a subject that she may have enjoyed and excelled in wouldn't have made any difference. It could have happened as she was climbing the stairs to go to the toilet! From the information we have, she appears to have died from Sudden Adult Death Syndrome (the adult form of cot death) and is not preventable. No one knows how she died but 'screening' is just another way of turning us into a nanny state. Whatever anone's views, this is a tradgic story, my sympathy to the family and friends of this girl.

All schoolchildren should be required to pass strict medical screenings before being allowed to participate in school athletics. The school would then have to sign off on authorization after reviewing the health vitals of each child, and the vitals would need to be in safe ranges in BP, heart rate, respiratory rate, etc., before participation could occur.

The school would then have to sign off on authorization after reviewing the health vitals of each child, and the vitals would need to be in safe ranges in BP, heart rate, brain waves, respiratory rate, etc., before participation could occur. Lily may not have died if she was scientifically checked out for acceptable health for sports and her vitals were found unsafe to her for this kind of activity.

sorry, it showed no pending comments after I posted the single log I intended to make and this is a duplicate entry

The children need to be medically checked out before participating in athletics and only allowed to participate in sports if their physical health vitals meet criteria agreed on by an expert medical board.

Death is not the end. The soul goes on to pastures new.
Lily had obviously finished what she had to do here on earth.
At the point where her soul left the body it probably head
straight to the body of a new baby coming into the world.
Otherwise perhaps she headed to higher spiritual levels if
she had spiritually achieved. It also depends on her previous lives.

And so the soul continues its journey as it trains here on earth
and tries to keep turning to God and away from the ego.

None the less the loss is terribly painful for her family and friends
and my heart goes out to them.

I totally agree with you shushkin. I can tell that your soul is already on a high spiritual level. Fonsini on the other hand will be coming back over and over again until the lessons of love and compassion are learned...This is going to take a while!!

If that's reincarnation you're talking about, I'll probably eat him a few times, too.

My deepest condolenses to the parents and family of Lily.
This is very sad; I mean how do you call a mother to announce the death of her child who left home safe and sound for school! Schools should make sure they don't get children involved in rigorous activities during PE. My 13 year old son has been complaining to me that his PE teacher always get him to take part in Rugby. For me, Rugby is a very violent sport meant for people who are very fit without any health issues.
Who knows what happened in the case of Lily?

Not to take away from the sadness of this, I'm a parent and couldn't imagine the pain of this loss, but with children obesity at an all time high, we need PE more than ever. Rigorous activity is what is needed.

My deepest condolenses to the parents and family of Lily. I must use this opportunity to raise my fears over the type of activities PE teachers gets children involved in. My 13 year old son has complained to me a couple of times about how he is being forced to take part in rugby during PE. I am sure a lot of people will agree with me that rugby is for people who are very fit and has no health issues. Parents, please don't ignore those little complaints from your children.

Everyone hates some things they have to do in PE and enjoys others.. it's part of growing up and going to school in the UK, and today there is far less compulsory PE than there was say, 30 years ago. If you don't encourage your son to try harder, what sort of lesson are you teaching him about overcoming obstacles? Nobody in his class at age 13 is going to be a rugby ace so they will be learning at a slower pace..it's hardly going to be like rugby union. You're right that rugby is a tough sport, and I have a friend who died age 17 on the rugby field due to an underlying heart condition, but that was inevitable and would have killed him eventually. He LOVED rugby and played it knowing his heart was weak. If your son has a health condition then the school should act appropriately and certainly not force him to do something that puts him at serious risk, otherwise I think you are pandering to your child in my honest opinion.
