A woman was jailed for 120 days today for stealing a First World War memorial plaque belonging to a church.

Lana Clitheroe, 42, of Dundalk Road, Brockley, south-east London, had admitted the theft at an earlier hearing, a court official said.

Her co-defendant, Paul Kelly, 42, of Ennerdale Road, Lewisham, south-east London, also pleaded guilty but will be sentenced at a later date.

The bronze plaque, which was of unknown value, was stolen from St Mary's Church in Lewisham High Street on October 19 last year.

It belonged to the church and has never been found.

Police have said the historical and emotional value of the memorial, to friends and relatives of the fallen soldiers, is incalculable.

The pair appeared at Bromley Magistrates' Court today where Kelly had his sentencing adjourned to Inner London Crown Court on an unfixed date.

He was remanded in custody.

They should have both been executed by firing squad.

This irreverent thief is either ill-educated or heartless; either way, the sentence should include all the expenses for both the investigation and the replacement of that relic--and the thieves should make that replacement at a time that has been announced.

these dirty rotten thieves are beyond the pale , they should be staked at the memorial site were they stole from so passers by could throw rotten fruit at them because thats what they are the rotten fruit from a rotten tree , once there for a few days ,shipped out to front line duty to walk in front of the army searching for land mines ,

That is where the old pillory system would work so that these people know what the public think about it..

Perhaps 120 days attached to a unit in Helmad would help the pair release why we have these plaques.

I really can't find words for the people who would stop so low as to steal these memorial plaques. Both my grandfathers fought and were injured in the Great War and suffered with those injuries for the rest of their lives...what would they say about this? To them it would be absolutely unthinkable such a thing could happen.
They lived in tougher times and were much tougher people so I'll let that influence my idea of a way of punishing those responsible of which they would probably approve. They deserve a good beating with a big stick.
Barbaric? Perhaps...but I volunteer.

one thing is for sure equality will not be shown in the mans sentance, the sentance is already far to short. perhaps they should say what they did with the plaque and the scrap metal dealer should join them, they are just as bad
