Costa Concordia: Italians Beg For Search To Continue For Missing Dayana (PICTURES)

Italians are making emotional appeals for rescuers to continue searching for survivors of the Costa Concordia tragedy, one week since the cruise ship ran aground close to the Italian island of Giglio.

Members of the public have been making heartfelt pleas on social network sites and on national TV, mostly focusing on the plight of five-year-old Italian girl Dayana Arlotti who is missing with her father William Arlotti.

A Facebook page has been set up dedicated to continuing the search for the youngest victim of the tragedy.

"We are still hoping, even if day after day it’s getting harder” William's Arlotti's cousin, Sabrina Ottaviani, wrote on the Facebook page.

Her mother also made an appeal on Italy's most popular chat show, Porta a Porta.

“I am asking the rescuers to keep on looking for Dayana. I am asking them with all my heart to continue the search.”

Their appeals come as the rescue mission was called off once more after stormy weather made conditions around the Costa Concordia perilous for divers, who are already fighting against cold water and floating debris swirling round the wreckage on the reef.

Fears grow for the Costa Concordia itself, as the massive ship threatens to shift from the rocky outcrop where it ran aground on 13 January.

It’s the third time that the ship’s instability has hampered rescue efforts, as coastguards are cautious of the 114,500 tonne cruise liner moving as much as a metre. The weather is predicted to get worse over the weekend.

Currently suspended in 20 metres of water, the divers and rescuers are still searching for survivors on the Costa Concordia. Only after the search has been called off can salvage crews begin pumping some of the 2,300 tonnes of fuel out of the vessel. If the ship slides and the fuel tanks are wrenched open it could cause a major environmental disaster.

It is expected to take at least two weeks to pump the oil out of the ship’s 17 tanks. If it slides off the rocky shelf it could sink many more metres, which will not only make the operation more difficult but will threaten marine life in the clear waters surrounding the island.

The sea around the Tuscan archipelagoes is renowned for its dolphins, coral and sea life.

Earlier a video emerged which appeared to show the crew telling passengers standing scared in life jackets that everything was fine and to go back to their cabins.

The woman says in Italian:

"We would like to make an announcement in the name of your Captain. We kindly ask you to return to your cabins, or if you wish, to stay around the lounge area.

"As soon as we will be done fixing the problem we have with the electric generator, everything will go back to normal. If you wish to stay here, it’s ok, but I am asking you to return to your cabins and remain calm and seated.

"It’s all under control."

The Captain and the crew aboard the Costa Concordia have been criticised for not beginning an evacuation of the ship sooner. It is difficult to ascertain whether it was wise advice telling passengers to go further into the depths of the ship, when water had already begun leaking into the boat.

British Expat Sandra Rodgers, who is to begin legal action against the cruise liner company Costa Cruises said "Thank God we didn't do as they had told us as we may not have made it off the ship alive."

Criticism has also been levelled at the company after audio between port authorities and the Costa Concordia reveals that crew said they were facing a “blackout.” At the time of the recording, the cruise liner had already crashed into the rocks, and had begun to take on water.

Captain Francesco Schettino and his crew are accused of procrastinating rather than alerting the authorities sooner. It is rumoured that Schettino was seen dining with a 'mystery blonde', Moldovan Domnica Cemortan just hours before the disaster.

Today Ms Cemortan admitted chatting with Schettino, but denied she was his lover.

Eleven people are now confirmed dead, while more than 21 remain missing.

I would suggest temp patching the ship and towing to a dry dock. Pump the water out and find the rest of the victims before it breaks up and any are lost.

I have yet to see a proper underwater search carried out , divers using scuba gear do not seem to be going much below the water level in the ship, which is understandable as it is not safe to search a flooded ship using this equipment. The professional way would be to use surface supplied air to enable a diver to safely search the lower decks where people are most likely to be trapped.
Unbelievable that this has not been carried out , as there could be people trapped in air pockets.

Rescue should continue until all passengers are accounted for; it is possible the pair were washed out to sea. The captain should be charged with manslaughter; we trust the crews of these ships with our lives/safety. My sympathies are with all the passengers involved in this horrific incident.

Give that obnoxious captain a wet suit and get him to lend a hand.

Unfortunatly BeeJaCeees remarks to me have been removed. He says that this is not the place for God and it is very crass of me. He is insulting most of the people who have commented on this tragedy. In reading his other comments all he can seemto do is insult or disagree with everybody elses, but he has the right. I would hate to have his attitude.

To be the devil's advocate, not everybody believes in God. I left Christianity many years ago, and am much happier not having my life run by religion, or an intangible deity. From one page of comments alone, your own comments seem to be a little overbearing in the God department--which can be construed as insulting to any Hindus, Buddhists, Wiccans, atheists, Muslims, etc. Fair is fair.

Has Schettino given up shaving? If he hasn't, how in the name of Humanity, does he look himself in the face every morning?

Excuse me, but don't you think that this flippant remark is disrepectful to the dead and missing?

Consider Schittino's actions.
One. He endangers his ship, and the lives of his passengers and crew, by performing a reckless and unnecessary manvoeuvre.
Two. He seems to go into denial.
Three. He fails to order an immediate evacuation.
Four. He fails to inform the coastcard of the situation, and fails to request assistance.
Five. He allegedly abandons his ship before his passengers.

HOW does he look himself in the face?

For god's sake please halt all salvage operations till all passengers are accounted for dead or alive. the poor poor families need to know what's happened to their loved ones and salvage operations so soon could affect the outcome. Miracles can and do happen. Please do not approach this ship heavy handed and potentially endanger potential survivors. I offer my heart felt sorrow to all families affected by this tragedy. God bless you and all lives lost. much love and support offered from me here in the United knigdom xxx

I agree with all you say. I know the Lord will help the familes of this child and of all others who are missing with His gentle hand of love.My prayers go out to them. The one thing that I am affraid has to be done is start the salvage, because the first part is to empty the ship of its fuel oil. This in itself can take up to three months, and God willing, all survivers or bodies will be found. It is important to remove the fuel to relieve the waight from the vessel to hopfully stop her breaking in half or more, which would make a bigger disaster. I hope to in Gods name that it is treated with respect untill all are accounted for. Miracles DO STILL happen.

Sorry. I sincerely hope that they find the girl and that she is alive and well. But to halt the salvage operation which could potentially help find missing people does not really make sense. I am a diver and know that at this time of year the water temperature around there will be very low. Even if you had a huge pocket of air, you would succumb to the numbing cold, so as much as i hate to say it, chances of now finding anyone alive on the wreck are zero. I would love to be proved wrong, and hope that I am wrong, but...
What I cant get my head around is how on earth they managed to sail into this reef or rock outcrop, they have said that they were not on ther charts, that I cant believe, but didnt they have s depth sounder??? even for small boats you can buy depth sounders that even scan forwards, just in case you are running in to shallow water. Loads of questions and no answers yet.

Unfortunatly you are correct in what you say, but by a miracle I hope you are wrong. The ship is said to have had every modern alarms, scanners that have been invented The idiot captain thought he knew better.

Of course we all hope the missing people are found alive, but I think you may be right that we are hoping in vain.

I cant imagine the pain that the families must be going through now, trying to hold on to hope but feeling sick with fear in their hearts that it's too late.

There must come a point when the experts will know that missing people couldn't have survived and they'll be kind enough to speak to the families of the missing, so they can start to grieve. I hope there is still a chance they are alive, but if not, then the feelings of the families of the missing should be the priority.

That poor little girl! How frightened she must have been, it doesn't bear thinking about. I hope you are still alive little one but if not RIP and know there are people out here praying for your soul. XX

The children that were saved will be fearing any future holidays that need ship or plane transport, lets hope they dont have any bad dreams, and the younger ones grow to forget, R.I.P to all the dead, and sorrow for the familys who lost loved ones. lets not waist our breath on the scummy Captain, he knows what he did, he'l get his in time, We just have to wait and hope, you never know, their could be people still alive, we have to hope, everybody just close your eyes for a few seconds and picture HP haveing a headline reading, another passenger found alive. everybody please, and you.

I am no expert- but I reckon the stricken liner is not going anywhere until salvage can be arranged. That is unlikely to invlove refloating. So the search for the missing will need to be completed before any action to remove or break up the liner is taken. I realise this situation is probably intolerable for the relatives of the missing and that the search and rescue is hampered by the weather and serious risk- But it will continue.
