Iran: Flotilla Of Warships Sent Through Strait of Hormuz Heightens Tensions

Britain has joined the United States and France in sending a flotilla of warships through the sensitive Strait of Hormuz in a pointed message to the Iranian regime.

The Ministry of Defence confirmed that a Royal Navy Type 23 frigate, HMS Argyll, was part of the US-led carrier group to pass through the waterway, as tensions continued to escalate over Tehran's nuclear programme.

The strait, a 34-mile-wide sea passage, connects the petroleum-producing Persian Gulf states to the ocean, making it a strategic choke point on the world's economy.

The EU gave preliminary approval to new sanctions against Iranian oil on Monday. On the table is a total ban on European purchases of Iranian oil - a sanction that would not just hit Iran but key EU buyers including Greece Italy and Spain.

Sanctions are already expected against Iran's central bank.

The full implementation of the sanctions would be delayed until 1 July, due to concerns about their impact on the European economy.

The UK, Germany, France and the Netherlands had been leading calls for nothing more than a three-month delay before the sanctions bite, but Greece, which fears its economic woes will worsen if it cannot find alternative suppliers at Iran-style preferential rates - has urged a much longer phase-in to ease the pain.

The embargo is yet to be formally approved by the EU nations' foreign ministers, who are meeting in Brussels.

In response to the expected sanctions the Iranians have threatened to close the strait - through which 35% of the world's tanker-borne oil exports pass - in retaliation.

It came as Foreign Secretary William Hague urged Iran to "come to its senses" and resume negotiations on its nuclear programme.

Any bid by Iran to block the Strait of Hormuz at the entrance to the Gulf, through which 20% of the world's oil exports pass would be "illegal" and "unsuccessful", Hague warned.

The new sanctions follow the stepping up of economic and diplomatic sanctions against Iran last month, targeting members of the ruling regime and associates who are subject to visa bans in Europe and the freezing of assets.

But today's ramping up of measures reflects concern that Iran is developing nuclear weapons under the guise of a nuclear energy programme.

Hague commented: "These (sanctions) are peaceful and legitimate measures. They are not about conflict.

"I hope Iran will come to its senses on this issue and agree to negotiate."

EU governments are calculating that the loss of European oil markets will persuade Iran to reopen talks on its nuclear plans.

On Monday, a MoD spokesman confirmed that "HMS Argyll and a French vessel joined a U.S. carrier group transiting through the Strait of Hormuz, to underline the unwavering international commitment to maintaining rights of passage under international law."

The six-strong flotilla was led by the USS Abraham Lincoln, a nuclear-powered aircraft carrier with up to 90 warplanes on board.

It reportedly passed through the Strait of Hormuz without incident.

The Abraham Lincoln is the first American carrier to enter the Gulf since the end of last year.

It replaced another carrier, the USS John C Stennis, in a routine ship rotation.

The departure of the USS John C Stennis had prompted the head of the Iranian armed forces, General Ataollah Salehi, to warn the Americans not to send any more carriers to the region.

"We don't have any intention of repeating our warning and we warn only once," he said.

The MoD spokesman said that Britain maintained "a constant presence in the region as part of our enduring contribution to Gulf security".

Royal Navy warships have been patrolling there continuously since the 1980s.

I welcome the news that we are going to attack Iran(we will), but lets be clear, like other Arab countries it was a turkey shoot, no air cover, ancient planes and ground force equipment, its another 1 way battle, "BUT" i think lots of the younger Iranians want democracy, and lots have died demonstrating for it as in Syria also, If a battle is to take place why dont we do what we did against Gadaffi send cruise missiles at the people at the top, he soon came to the "Negotiating Table" once his palaces were destroyed, The Iranian and Syrian people have died on the streets for freedom, get the real culprits, lets not damage any relations that could be gained by hurting the same people who basically want a standard of living like us, These fanatical religious barbarians need moving out, and quickly, they have caused nothing but death and destruction since they came to power, In both of these countries human life seems to be extremely cheap, and the torturers and murderers put on trial like Sadam and his murdering officers.

So why is every body being so nasty to them ?

Have we learned NOTHING? Why must our politicians blindly follow the AmeriKKKian lead? Americans are dumber than the dirt they stand on, we would be better off if our politicians blindly chose the position opposite the one chosen by America.

Facts; 1. if,as i believe is true, the straights are half in Iran and half in Oman then closing them would be an international crime if Oman wanted to keep them open, 2. if someone dosnt stop the Iran nuke program now we WILL have big problems later, 3.if Iran closes the straights they WOULD hold the world to ransom (not just the western world) 4. you cant ignore this kind of threat just because its easier than facing it.
No one has mentioned the timing of the Iran threat, its very important. The UAE are working flat out to build a pipeline from the oil states in the north to the small part of Sharsha located in Faracha, when complete the oil will go direct to a port OUTSIDE the straights removing Irans biggest bargaining piece. The oil would be safe from all but....... Iranian bombing, hence the Iran move now before the line is running at full power and the US attempt to reduce the Iran nuke threat, the UAE can protect the pipeline from conventional bombing with US support but not a nuke attack

Us and the UK's governments are total hypocrite if a plane gets to close to their borders they will shoot it down.Imagine if Iran or Pakistan or even China started military training with Mexico in the Gulf the US would see it as a direct attack to their sovereignty.Yet they can do it to any other country in the world cause "I'm big and your small"
02:08 AM on 01/25/2012
The US and EU don't do it where there is no threat. If China or others felt threatened......as is the case here.......with the Iran regime always threatening world peace, world economics and region stability for their Gulf State neighbors. No sense in them pursuing Uranium enrichment at a 20% level......as that is not for electricity or medicine......but only used for weaponry. So.....again.....are you unclear why are we there? Seems the world has been patient for a long time.

20% isn't near enough for weapons. 95% or greater is required for weapons. Oh, and DUHmerica is ALWAYS threatening world peace, economics and world stability and has the means to destroy the planet several thousand times over. Iran doesn't threaten the world nor does it have the ability to do so.

Im sorry what planet are you living on? The US and the EU don't do it where there is no threat? Ere Afghanistan, Iraq, Tunisia and egypt along with a whole heap of countries in the past ring a bell? And before you say these were countries were they were ran by tyrants? Who do we think we are telling other cultures and countries that are way is best? Look at the mess were in? Egypt? They said if the Libyan leader did not stop killing the protesters we would attack, he did, we attacked anyway. We put a rogue government in place and military are still killing protesters......yet we do nothing now as we have his assets and control of the oil etc so to hell with the people of egypt, libya, tunisia. Why haven't we gone to Africa and saved the millions murdered there? Oh thats right they haven't any oil or assets?

Remember that this tense situation could be set off by accident/mis-communication/misunderstanding that could set off a regional war w/nuclear weapons. Iran is 3 times larger in population than Iraq and won't be no cake walk. If we were to lose then it would create a new world power alliance.. led by China, Russian, India, Brazil (BRIC). There's lots at stake and much to lose here.

Yes, by all means, let's antagonize Iran and spark off another senseless military conflict in the Middle East in the name of peace. Just ask the UK how much damage a small country like Argentina can cause. What if Iran is in possession of high tech anti-ship missles from China or Russia? They could get lucky and take out a carrier. The US does NOT NEED any oil from the Middle East. Our presence there is simply a matter of bullying others.

I'm sure gawd fits into the equation somehow. Mighty Christian warriors(the US) seeking to achieve dominion in the "holy" land.... Or to hasten the second cumming of their imaginary Christ.

Please leave us(the UK) out of your stupidity.

Regardless of Political Party affiliation or support for US Strategic efforts...

...these types of announcements lay bare the fact that the GOP Presidential candidates truly know nothing about what is truly going on with US Strategic efforts, Iran or otherwise.

They simply make stuff up in debates, but state it as if they actually have a clue.

Most of the stuff they make up is based upon readily available information, not any Above Top Secret meetings or briefings.

The Democrats are slowly but surely putting the nails in the coffin of the GOP's once hallowed position as the 'Go-to Guys' on National Security matters.

Is there a relation between economic hardship and the warmongers coming out in force? The world is going through a period of uncertainty in terms of solutions to the economic problems in Europe, the U.S. and Asia. the solution as always for the makers of weapons is war and more war. Never mind the destruction, loss of life, diseases. It's all good.

So, we send a nuclear powered aircraft carrier in to bully them into resuming talks about stopping their nuclear power program? Does someone else see a problem with this?
