Pubs

If you like a pint in your local boozer, then look away now - this might hurt.

Pubs the length of Britain are closing down as competition from supermarkets crushes the cornerstone of social culture.

A leading think-tank has now said pubs which improve community life should be given tax breaks to help them survive.

With 16 pubs currently believed to be closing each week, the report by the Institute for Public Policy Research (IPPR) recommends a 50% business rate relief for those that can prove they act as community hubs.

The British Beer & Pub Association (BBPA) this week reported 140 million fewer pints of beer were sold in pubs last year, as they struggle to cope with competition from supermarkets, increases in tax on beer and changes in consumers' tastes.

According to the researchers' calculations, pubs that serve as community hubs can generate between £20,000 and £120,000 of "social value" each year.

Campaign for Real Ale (Camra), which carried out the research revealing that 16 pubs are closing every week, found that those in suburban areas are the worst affected.

The consumer group said that in two years 1,078 pubs have gone under in Britain's suburbs, with eight closing every week, compared to six in rural areas and two in town high streets.

Regarding the cuts in the police force department,I do not see this as the right move at this crucial time of which the government is working on how to resolve the increase of unemployment in the country,Rather than making deployment decision,I would suggest that government should introduce Transparency system of Duties to the police department and even to all the Security departments in the country of which will allow the individual employee in this department to fulfill their required and assinged duties satisfactorily to the government and the people.

There are plenty of boarded up shops these days too. Why should pubs be any different?

One of the main reasons is the appalling behaviour of the big Pub Co's. The average tied landlord works long hours, and earns around £15k a year!

These Pub Co's spent absolute fortunes on massive property portfolios right up to the recession. As a result many over-extended, and their assets lost huge amounts of value.

Meanwhile it's the landlords who end up losing their savings and livelihood.

I think its the greedy brewery chains that charge the tenant landlords ridiculous rents and prices for their beer that have killed the pubs as much as Tesco and the rip off cost of living in the UK. The brewery chains monopoly here would be illegal in the USA but the UK allows its citizens to be ripped off at every opportunity. The a similar thing is happening in the high streets with retail rents they are way to high for the trade they bring in so thats why the shops cant survive retail landlords dont care they made their money in the 80's boom so they would sooner see the shop empty and falling down then drop the price. I expect the great retail property crash is just round the corner where either the retail landlords cut there rents to a realistic level or eventualy go bust themselves.

It’s not the competition from supermarkets that’s killing pubs. The smoking ban has totally destroyed the pub experience, they smell of BO now :( and of cause, Muslims don't drink so there are many midlands towns where pubs have no chance now.

I'm not sure why, but there are a large number of new posters, whose names look entirely made up, and whose views are intentionally provocative - and usually poorly written.

TROLLS!

The smoking ban has not destroyed the pub experience. I know of many pubs which are doing very well because they have a restaurant and sell different types of ale at a reasonable price.
Many pubs just sell Guinness, Tetley's, Fosters with another crap beer. Some pubs do not sell any real ale and those pubs will lose trade.

Alcohol is NOT good for you, it will eventually kill you. A friend of mind recently died because of alcohol and he was only 48 yrs old. It destroys the liver. It is responsible for serious injury or possibly even killing of innocent victims when people alcohol intake is over the legal limit and then they get behind the wheel of a car or motorbike.
