Indian Children Dress As Mahatma Gandhi

Underprivileged Indian children dressed as their country's founding father Mahatma Gandhi, on the eve of the anniversary of his death.

A Guinness World Record-breaking 485 boys aged between 10 and 16 donned round glasses and fake moustaches for the march in central Kolkata on Sunday.

The Times of India reports that the previous record for mini-Ghandis was set in June 2010 by a group of 255 students.

Ghandi was assassinated on 30 January 1948, aged 78, by Hindu nationalist Nathuram Godse.

Awesome, where is the Gandhi amusement park? I really want to ride the Peace Train, check out the Ahimsa Cafe, and the Homespun Cotton Club!

This just reeks of sensationalism, i'm sure Gandhi is rolling in his grave..

This is shamefully-careless sub-literacy. A non-profit organization misspelled his name in large type on the outside of an envelope soliciting money; they corrected it in a later mailing.

At least, that wrong initial "Gh" makes some sense; such spellings in some languages are far from rare. Some names begin with "Gh" (when written with our alphabet). However, Mohandas Gandhi's is not one of them. ("Mahatma" is not a name, really; it's an appellation/title of great respect, iirc meaning something like "Great soul".)

Point is, the majority of us are mis-taught so we're crippled -- simply blind to the details of particular spellings. (Can you spell "Harm*n K*rd*n", noted for quality audio)?

Another one: a famous U.S. brand of corn flakes for decades, starts "Kel...". How many letters are there in its fully-spelled name? Six? Wrong. How many times have you seen that name? A few thousand, maybe? How about an hotel chain, "Mar..."? It's like "Marion". Six letters? Seven? Nope.

Another reason for this problem is that many people spell the way others do, and rarely check to see whether a given spelling is correct. We have a written dialect-by-consensus distinguished by many misspelled words, but those are what many people think are correct. That dialect even includes a few non-words, such as "alot", not in any dictionary. Others are split into two, such as "intact", misspelled as "in tact".

I think Mahatma Gandhi would be more interested in the theme of peace and love than the misspelling of his name. But one point I would like to make is the non profit profiteering which seems to be the cultic practice of most religions. I don't think Mahatma Gandhi would approve of the money making aspect in the soliciting of his image. If they represented his humility and lowliness of mind without financial gain they would be more worthy of using his image.

I would also like to thank you for correcting wrong spellings. It is always good to be educated by those who know.

I am so tired of seeing his name misspelled - though at least it's spelled correctly ONCE in the article! GANDHI, folks, please, not Ghandi!!!

I wonder what Ghandi would make of the fact that India which still has so much poverty is a nuclear power ?

Same goes for Britain, USA, Europe and the rest of the world. All countries are impoverished and are stockpiling nuclear weaponry enough to condense the world many times over. But where is our GANDHI??

"Indian Children Dress As Ghandi"
Will the real Ghandi sit down, and refuse to move.
