'Parasitic' Twin With Eyes And Hair Found In Peruvian Boy, Three (Video)

Parasitic Twin

First Posted: 30/01/2012 09:50 Updated: 30/01/2012 10:50   PA

Doctors in Peru have found a "parasitic twin" in the stomach of a three-year-old boy, and plan to surgically remove the tissue.

Dr Carlos Astocondor of the medical team at Las Mercedes Hospital in the northern port of Chiclayo said the condition occurs in about one of every 500,000 live births.

He said the partially formed foetus weighs a pound and a half and is nine inches long.

Dr Astocondor said the brain, heart, lungs and intestines never developed after the foetus was absorbed by the other foetus inside the mother's womb.

He said it has some hair on the cranium, eyes and some bones.

The surgery is set to be carried out on Isbac Pacunda today.

To quote Hitchens "Some design !"
One can see immediately why religions and other supernatural woo would evolve to explain events such as this in primitive societies. (Primitive as in ancestral). Our brains crave meaning and explanation and if there isn't one to hand, well we will damn well invent one thank you very much.
Science for the win here, both as a true explanation of how and why things like this happen, and also in the training and technology to enable the boy's future life.

A situation like this, could cause Rick Sanitarium's head to explode.
16:58 on 01/02/2012
The question is: is it sentient? I know it can't possibly be self-aware, but I sure would hate to be stuck in someone stomach (with EYES), without the ability to do anything. I can see how this can be a source material for a morbid horror story, or a morbid philosophical novel about the meaning of life, or a Cannibal Corpse song.

I wonder what Rick Santorum's position on this would be.

If life begins at fertilization, and therefore has nothing to do with "viability, " then this "entity" is a life and must remain in place. Removing this "entity" is murder. Right? Consistency? Anyone? Anyone? Bueller? Bueller?

Rick Sanitarium would let the little boy die rather than kill the "twin". He has issues with the color gray ..he can only deal with black or white. I have no doubt.

Now if the GOP had the decision making policy regarding this "foetus", wonder what THAT decision would be ?~!

Accused of heresy and decided to go with that.

That would sure put the other contenders at a huge disadvantage. All of them except Rocky Anderson.

Very funny or sad. It would equal the others.

so....santorum is his own evil twin?

By that logic, we're all twins and we're all evil.

My youngest sister had the very same thing over 20 years ago! It almost killed her! Glad this baby is having surgery now!

Poor little guy, surgery at his age.

Well, better out than in.

The interesting thing is that if it was a fraternal twin rather than an identical twin, this little boy might actually have two sets of DNA. It's very rare but there are documented cases.

What you're talking about is Chimera, a strange sort of conjoined twin. This child has Fetus in Fetu in which the absorbed fetus becomes a benign tumor. In Chimera the twins sort of split then stick back together and form one baby. And that is much more rare than Fetus in Fetu. I did my final research paper for paramedical medicine on Fetus in Fetu years ago. That's how I learned about it.
05:08 on 01/02/2012
It was on endless repeat on Discovery health a few years ago.

There are a few conditions in which the same sort of mass is found, it could be fetus in fetu, there could be chimerism, and it might just be a parasitic twin. I'm sure they'll know more when they get the mass out and do some testing.

The condition is known as Fetus in Fetu. It means one fetus sort of wrapped it's self around the other. The resultant tumor is sometimes called a dermoid cyst. It can have hair and skin in it. The Fetus in Fetu is something I have been interested in every since I did my rotations as a paramedical medicine student years ago. I was doing anesthesia rotations and we actually sat by in the OR at that time. The case was a child who had a dermoid cyst in the brain. The surgeon was shaken when he opened the skull and the thing had an eye that looked like it was winking. It was removed and the child did fine, but it set off a lifetime interest in the phenomenon. The surgeon allowed everyone in the OR to look at it since they might never get the chance to see another one. They are freaky to look at, but are simply one more strange possible outcome of pregnancy.
04:48 on 01/02/2012
Very interesting. I'd been thinking that at odds of 1 in 500,000, there must certainly have been some instances in this country, too. Thanks for this story. Certainly startling for the surgeon, I can imagine!

Religion is the root of all evil.
16:19 on 01/02/2012
This is really in response to your other comment above this one, but the fact that this occurs in 1 of 500,000 pregnancies is insane! The article states that makes it very rare, but that's not very rare at all! I agree with you that 5% of all twin pregnancies is astonishing. Then again, the number of twin pregnancies has increased greatly over the last decade. Anyway, so you are a paramedic or did you continue on to become a doctor? I wanted to be a paramedic. I just don't have the money for the schooling, but I love this stuff.

I was a paramedic with National Advanced Cardiac Life Support, National Advanced Trauma Life Support Registration. It means an additional 3 years of schooling and passing the National Registration Assay. I had applied to Medical School when I was diagnosed with Systemic Lupus. It quickly became impossible for me to continue working, much less my studies. I miss it, though. I miss knowing I was helping others and I miss the sense of family I had with the men and women I worked with.

*sigh*.....my point is that if there were a personhood amendment in place where this child's mother lived, then there would be a mandate to carry this child to term. It is exactly cases like these that point out the absolute mendacity of these foolish panderings to the non-thinking mouthbreathing, knuckle-dragging right wing.
