L'Oreal adverts for anti-wrinkle cream featuring actress Rachel Weisz have been banned following a complaint from Liberal Democrat MP Jo Swinson.

The advert, for revitalift repair, was judged by the Advertising Standards Authority to have "misleadingly exaggerated" the product after Weisz's skin was retouched.

The move was hailed by Swinson as a sign of progress: "Where advertisers cross the line it's important that they are held accountable more generally. It's not purely about women, there's big pressures on men as well," she told Huff Post UK.

"With the volume of images that contain women as well as men, there is arguably a greater pressure on women but it's not purely a feminist issue. Along with this idealised images there is also a very pervasive message that what matters for women is how they look."

The Liberal Democrat MP said she was "sure" that extended to female MPs, adding: "Go through the [press] archives over the past few years, everything from Theresa May's shoes and Jacqui Smith's cleavage. I've seen MPs in the new intake suffer appalling sexist stuff, when they're trying to pursue an important issue it just gets lost in the coverage. It's a double whammy, not only is there all of this pressure to look this way but girls grow up thinking that's what important."

Previously, Swinson has successfully made complaints against a Lancome advert featuring Julia Roberts and a Maybelline advert featuring the supermodel Christy Turlington.

Swinson, who is chair of the All-Party Parliamentary Group on Body Image, said she had no more outstanding complaints to make but "I've pulled some more out of magazines."

"Swinson, who is chair of the All-Party Parliamentary Group on Body Image"

And how much money does it cost the electorate to run the "All-Party Parliamentary Group on Body Image"

This is another example of the gravy train waste ................

Does this deluded woman really think we all actually believe these adverts. Does she think we don't know that a pot of cream made from lamb's urine and grease or whatever won't actually stop or reverse the aging process. Heavens above, with all that is going wrong in the world she is wasting everyone's time worrying about such an inconsequential matter.I thought with the demise of Limpit Object that the Lib/Dems were getting just a tad more in touch with reality, no such luck

Everyone knows that all beauty treatments are about hiding from what's really there or nobody would buy any of it. I'd rather have women who use that stuff and are happy than those who constantly go on about their physical imperfections all the time.
Being a man I don't use any of those bits and would much rather have a natural looking woman who is not particularly good looking but with a nice personality than one whose make up could take the full force of a cannonball by it's thickness.

Better this silly woman spent her time doing what she should be doing, sorting out this lousy countries state of affairs - creating jobs, boosting sales and getting us out of Europe!

What a complete waste of time this all was..........................

All adverts are full of cr*p and exaggerate the truth of its products from self propelled flying virgin cabin crew, big macs that look 6 inches deep, dogs that drive the kids to school and make dinner, and toliet duck that stcks and does not look like a lump of snot sliding down your toilet after 5 flushes. But why is Jo Swinsons voice heard above everyone elses. No beauty product in the universe is going to make her look like the bell of the ball and I would much rather see the pretty Rachel Weisz on TV than her. I cannot believe after only 1 complaint an advert is pulled. Typical Liberal standing up for the people but all they are interested in is their own views.

We have often wondered about the validity of cosmetic claims when all of them use famous, young(ish) and already gorgeous women in their advertising, ie. the least likely to demonstrate the benefits ... if any!

We agree with most of the comments made - especially the one that refers to this single complaint causing the withdrawal of the advert - but it is (like many many others) tantamount to fraud.

Does anyone believe that the images have not been airbrushed?

I am very glad to read that an overpaid MP has nothing better to do with her paid time!
She should go and get a real job or just get on with what she is paid for instead of wasting her parilimentary pay and time over some advert!!
