Sainsbury's Tiger Bread To Be Renamed Giraffe Bread After Child's Heart-Warming Letter

Giraffe Bread

It's official: Sainsbury's Tiger Bread is to be renamed Giraffe Bread, thanks to a letter written by a three-year-old girl and the heart-warming response from a customer services member of staff.

Lily Robinson, who is "age three and a half" wrote to Sainsbury's last May, even drawing a picture of her imaginary dog Beaky at the bottom.

"Dear Sainsssssssssssssssssssbbbbbbbbbbbburyyys,

"Why is tiger bread c/alled tiger bread?" she asks.

"It should be c/alled giraffe bread.

Love from Lily Robinson age 3 1/2"

The letter, addressed to Sainsbury's Supermarkets, reached the customer service offices and employee Chris King responded.

"Thanks so much for your letter," he replied last June.

"I think renaming tiger bread giraffe bread is a brilliant idea - it looks much more like the blotches on a giraffe than the stripes on a tiger, doesn't it?"

King then explains the reason behind naming the bread so was because the first baker who made it a "looong time ago thought it looked stripey like a tiger.

"Maybe they were a bit silly."

King encloses a £3 gift card for the store and signs the letter "Chris King (age 27 & 1/3)

The letter hit the internet and made the pair online sensations.

"It's a lovely gesture. I feel great for Lily, imagine being that age and learning to read then seeing how big an impact your letter has made. I'm sure her family are very proud and I'm delighted to be a small part of it." King told Huffington Post UK.

And now Sainsbury's has confirmed they will be granting Lily's wish.

"We think renaming tiger bread to giraffe bread is a great idea and want to thanks Lily for helping us see the spots for what they are," the supermarket said on Tuesday.

Lily's mum Lucy told us: "Lily and I went into our local store this morning to see and she was so excited and couldn't stop giggling in the car after that. She is going to have some Giraffe Bread for her lunch today.

"We have been kept in the loop by Sainsburys on this development and are touched that this has happened. Notices by the new Giraffe Bread say that it was a customer's 'clever suggestion' :)"

Lucy added the family did not want to "profit personally" but "would love people who are moved by the story to give to the Disasters Emergency Committee charities to help feed starving children who do not have bread to eat".

Dear Lily.

Do you think you could help us to save rhinos from being poached too? Their horns aren't of any use as medicine, and we need to change hundreds of thousands of people's mindsets. Any help, perhaps even one letter, would be gratefully received by most of humanity.

'k thankx
carly.

The letter has beenhanded to the PR dept of Sainsburys and an enterprising PR has come up with the wheeze. They have generated lots, I mean lots, of free publicity at no cost. The posts on this item swing between people doubting the origin of the letter and those who choose to disregard that issue for the sake of enjoying the story as a cute distraction in an otherwise shi**y world. I don't believe a 31/2 year old came up with the story, I KNOW she didn't type the letter or construct the words and I don't believe the kid even wanted the letter sent to Sainsburys. If I am wrong I apologise, we obviously have a phenomonally gifted child who has studied marketing at a very young age. Moral of the story? There isn't one!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Thank you for your kind response, may I suggest you take lessons from said 3 year old, some are necessary. I did say I apologise if I am wrong, I said that in the forelorn hope my post wouldn't attract comments such as yours. Hey Ho, life is far too short to worry. I actually don't care whether I am right or not I was just passing time.

Tiger Bread has been a name known for a long time when the previous guy named it and it would be unfair for this name to be changed for these reasons given, all the other stores are obviously still wanting sales on the name Tiger Bread , so it may be a new bread for sainsbury's but not for other supermarkets! keep tradition going by sticking to original famous names , they all had a meaning at the time so it's unfair to change them!

My son could have written that easily when he was 3, but then he knew his alphabet at the age of 2. Perhaps you took longer to learn how to write, as I see that you have spelt twaddle as 'twoddle' and have put an apostrophe in 'sees' where none is needed.

I agree, my son was brought up bi-ligual. English and German. He could talk for England at two and in both languages. We were in a restaurant once and my Husband had ordered a beer. My son was sitting in the high chair and as the waitress put the glass of beer in front of my Husband my son piped up "is that alchohol?". the waitress turned around to see who had spoken. She couldn't beleive it was my son. Don't underestimate the little ones. What became of the clever arse (I can hear some people saying) He's an aerospace engineer!!!

Perhaps a decent donation from the company, deliberate not naming, should go to DEC, perhasps around £300K?
About what they are payong their advertising agency for this gem?
11:11 AM on 02/01/2012
Why the DEC specifically?
09:39 PM on 02/01/2012
That was the named charity, there a lot of other good causes, preferably one that helps people in our own country but it is up to the individual where they donate.
My charity money is directed at a local hospice, each to their own.
