Mouth Cancer Link To Alcohol The Focus Of New Government Campaign On Drinking

Alcohol Mouth Cancer

Regularly drinking two large glasses of wine or two strong pints of beer a day triples the risk of developing mouth cancer, a new Government campaign will say.

The adverts aim to show that drinking just over the recommended daily limit for alcohol increases the risk of serious health problems.

NHS recommendations are that men should not regularly drink more than three to four units a day, while women should not regularly drink more than two to three.

Adverts will run under the Change4Life banner and people will be able to access a new online calculator to work out how much they are drinking.

Two million leaflets will also be made available to Change4Life supporters and health professionals across England.

Drinkers will be encouraged to cut down through measures such as having alcohol-free days, not drinking at home before going out, swapping to low or alcohol-free drinks and using smaller glasses.

The campaign follows a survey of more than 2,000 people which found 85% do not realise that drinking over recommended limits increases the risk of developing breast cancer.

Some 65% were unaware it increases the risk of bowel cancer, 63% did not know about a raised risk of pancreatitis and 59% did not realise excess drinking increases the risk of mouth, throat and neck cancer.

Some 30% did not realise that drinking just over the limits increases the risk of high blood pressure and 37% did not realise it can impact on fertility.

Health Secretary Andrew Lansley said: "It's crucial we support people to know about how drinking too much poses risks to their health and how they can take control of their drinking.

"It can be easy to slip into the habit of having a few extra drinks each day, especially when drinking at home. But there can be serious health risks. Don't let drinking sneak up on you."

The issue of how to tackle alcohol abuse has proved controversial for the Government.

Last year, six major health organisations refused to back the public health responsibility deal, saying the Government was allowing the drinks industry to dictate health policy.

Under the deal, drink producers and retailers, including Diageo, Carlsberg and Majestic Wine, have pledged to provide clear unit labelling, support awareness campaigns and develop a new sponsorship code on responsible drinking.

But Alcohol Concern, the British Medical Association (BMA), the Royal College of Physicians, the British Association for the Study of the Liver, the British Liver Trust and the Institute of Alcohol Studies refused to support the deal.

Don Shenker, chief executive of Alcohol Concern, said it represented "the worst possible deal for everyone who wants to see alcohol harm reduced", with no sanctions if industry failed to meet the pledges, while the BMA said the Government had "chosen to rely on the alcohol industry to develop policies".

Alcohol Concern welcomed the new campaign but said "to a great extent this is the easy bit".

Soon there will be nothing left for us to eat and drink that is safe.
We are all going to die eventually anyway so lets all enjoy whatever makes us happy in the meantime.
The government's time would be better spent putting the country back on it's feet rather than meddling in our drinking habits. It's all distraction tactics if you ask me, designed to take our attention away from their incompetence.

I noticed the scaremongering coincides with the 'minimum alcohol price increase proposal' most of us wont be able to afford a drink at home soon, don't think this will apply to Cameron and his cronies though. Before this happens, maybe they should sort out the drink related trouble in pubs and clubs, maybe a reduced alcohol content in drinks?

NHS Dentists tell you to use mouthwash daily at least once a day - that's got alcohol in it! Wish they'd make their B***** minds up!

I don't drink much - perhaps half a dozen bottles of Mackeson or some other brown ale, and maybe a bottle or two of some sweet, light wine like Asti - a year. I enjoy that little nontheless and see no reason to force my small habit on others. Moderation is clearly the purpose of the proposed measures and one hopes it contributes to helping those whose enjoyment of drinking has got a little out of hand. As far as I know, no-one ever died from enjoying a pint or two a day. Heaven forfend that some governmental Nannie tries to introduce prohibition one day.

For a government that says it doesn't believe in the Nanny State it certainly goes in for an awefull lot of non stop nagging and lecturing? Never mind bringing back the village stocks this crowd are in danger of bringing back the naughty step as well.

We might as well have a short but happy life, rather than a long and miserable one.

The health experts are not suggesting you give up alcohol but drink in moderations

After several thousands of years of research, scientists believe that they can confirm that those who drink water will die.
The reseach into those who breathe air needs a little more funding though.

Instead of going to the pub, just nip down to your local swimming baths. Its a lot cheaper. Pay 2 quid and drink as much as you like!

If this is the case I know many who should have died many years ago

Maybe its time for a natural alternative which has no recorded deaths ever and can be shown to be beneficial to users.

Just having a few beers while I wait for the rib beef to finish cooking and nobody would ever consider eating such a delightful joint without a few glasses of Rioja and finishlng the evening with a cheese board and a few G&T's or the drink of your choice.
Any or all of these might be my death sentence, dilligaf.

Wonder what Congressional members will do when they get the news? Probably hold hearings to dispute those findings. Poor Boehner will have to cut down on the booze and the tanning beds.

And reading & worrying over these so called 'expert' reports,in my opinion, could give lead to a heart attack.
Pity they don't give us the true facts about the AIR we are breathing!

So they surveyed 2000 people, no mention of age groups, what about the other 40 million or so people who can drink. There is no mention of how many people die each year from Throat Cancer
