Iranian Parliament 'Ready' To Ban Oil Exports To EU As US Tightens Existing Sanctions

Iran is ready to halt oil exports to the EU before sanctions over its nuclear programme can be imposed, the country's parliament said.

Angered by EU and US moves to ban Iranian oil, parliamentarians are looking to preemptively stop shipments to some European nations.

Iranian MPs said on Tuesday they would move quickly to pass a bill imposing the embargo.

Speaker Ali Larijani said that it was necessary to respond to the EU's "irrational" agression.

"In retaliation for the Zionist-backed measure of the European countries to ban Iran oil, we are ready to impose a ban on oil exports to some European countries," the government-controlled Fars news agency quoted MP Mohammad Javad Karimi-Qoddusi as saying.

"The draft bill has been almost finalised. It will oblige the government to immediately cut oil exports to the EU," another MP told Fars, according to Reuters. "The bill also will ban import of any goods from the EU."

Iran insists that its nuclear programme is peaceful, but the EU and the United States remain convinced the oil-rich nation is developing material for use in an atomic bomb.

The EU began steps to restrict Iran's ability to export crude oil in January, and its embargo on the second-largest Opec nation is set to begin in July.

The delay in imposing the ban was intended to give EU countries time to find alternative suppliers.

Iran exports 2.2m barrels of oil a day, according to the US Energy Information Administration.

About 18% of Iran's oil exports are consumed by the EU.

The US has also imposed fresh sanctions on Iran as tensions over its nuclear programme continue to grow, with President Barack Obama signing an executive order on Monday tightening loopholes on banking restrictions already in place.

Obama said in a letter to Congress that the Iranian Central Bank was hiding transactions in an attempt to avoid sanctions.

The US Treasury department said the order represented its "resolve to hold the Iranian regime accountable for its failure to meet its international obligations".

It was suggested last week by the US defence secretary that Israel could attack Iran after April in order to halt progress on its nuclear programme.

Iran's foreign ministry denounced Obama's move as "antagonistic" and said that the sanctions would make "no impact".

Ministers told the Reuters news agency: "It's psychological warfare which has no impact. ... There is nothing new, it has been going on for over 30 years."

In December 2011 Iran threatened to close the vital Strait of Hormuz, through which around 17m barrels of oil pass every day, in response to sanctions.

People I do not believe in this century one should desire war. Many today have not experienced war and smugly urge for and passionately advocate for war behind illusions, deceived by notions of sanitized and perfectly targeted bombs. People die, lots and lots of people die and if you will not venture to take their place no offer your loved ones up for death then, please dread war. To me all this Iran issue does is position the world for more carnage and hate, surely it is best to seek for peace. What I have never understood is why what is good for the goose is not good for the gander. I say either one and all abolish nuclear weapons, research use and all or refrain from assumed higher 'God-like' moral positions. This idea that one Nation, any, unless one suicidal, would ever believe they could get away with targeting others with nuclear weapons with no fatal repercussions belongs to the Hiroshima period. Which group of people do not love life as any other? I hate war absolutely and one nation's triumph over another today only leaves a debt to be collected later. Lets stop perpetuating revenge.

You're absolutely right, Karen, but with the symptoms being daily displayed by the Tory-led coalition and their apparent reluctance to make any positive decisions in this direction - don't hold your breath...

Didnt Iran INVADE Iraq? Perhaps if they didnt build uranium enrichment factories to make nuclear weapons and their leader didnt say we will "wipe Israel off the map in a sea of holy fire" the UN wouldnt place sanctions on them?

The US treasury dept says that sanctions are imposed on Iran because it has failed to abide by various UN resolutions. I cannot recall any such actions being taken by any country with regards to complete defiance of ALL resolutions that have been ignored by Israel in its illegal and inhuman activities in occupied Palestine. If international sanctions and condemnation of any country is justified, surely Israel has to be the first target......or am I out of order for suggesting this?
09:43 AM on 02/08/2012
As most things in the world it depends on what you want to see and what you want to ignore. Israel needs to be punished for what it is doing in Palestine. Very least sanctions should be done.

Although Iran is not an Arab country it is a predominately Muslim country.Israel cannot attack Iran,if it tried it would cause most of the Arab nations to rally as a "Muslim Brother" had bee attacked. The US do not have the manpower to help out the Israeli's over this.Their firepower ,ships, would be sitting targets for the Chinese made Iranian weapons. The Iranians would close the Straight of Hornez,no ships could travel along there. No oil from Saudi or the UAE would move.People had better talk this through rather than sabre rattle.

With Obama going into an election this year and UK being just a broke USA poodle which cannot even afford to pay bankers proper bonus, Iran knows that the West simply do not have the appitite to invade yet another country for OIL.
So they can make noises and take the peace out of the West.

Even if Iran do manage to build new clear weapons materials, what the hell? Most nation has it and id other are saying it is for their security than does Iran has no right because they are bad? I believe in history Iran had not attack anyone, had not gone to invade other nation, had not use their power over other nation and as far as war is concerned, they had it with Iraq where in Iraq most world leaders went to see Saddam and they were feeling lucky meeting Saddam it is on dam news for many years. Iran did nothing even most countries were selling arms to Saddam including nurve gas? Yes others sold it, he used it? This mean they created it and they wanted to to test, so they used Saddam and he used on his population? Where else could he go?

Israel would attack Iran? Yes go ahead with it and Iran would do the same what is new in this, many countries do it every years since time began so let's wait and see?

The irony, Iran stopped using the international oil currency the Dollar a few years back and started dealing in the Euro. Maybe there lies the reason why Iran is going to stop all oil exports to the EU.

They can sell all the oil they want to China or India.
they care nothing to our feelings, why should they?

Americans really need to vote Ron Paul in this coming election. They've been dominated by Zionist lobbyists for too long. It seems over the past century *someone* has driven it into the minds of most Americans that they can't be American patriots unless they worship Israel. It does nothing for you except leech. Abandon it. It's the most powerful country in the region anyway, thanks to ceaseless American aid.

Is the US a country with thousands of nuclear weapons and the only nation on the planet to use not 1 but 2 nukes on civilians, invaded and occupied 2 countries in the last decade killing and wounding over 1 million people really in a postition to tell anyone who can and cannot have nuclear weapons. even though iran doesn't have them or there is any evidence of them trying to develop one.
09:35 PM on 02/07/2012
US? Everyone there are invaders from Europe and they killed most population called Red Indians who are been wiped out and those who remain are just model like animals to show their kids once up on a time they were native so to remove them from planet, you follow our lead? They have not change but act worse and knowledge they had they just using it not letting it rust so they are not stupid, world population are? Human rights what does it mean? If you shout anywhere about our president we would band you for life, put you in prison and send you back you and we can come and kill you and make you cry while we pee on you like they did when they went to Iraq and what they did to solders on photos? come on world be bright and think now and say we too have right to say bye bye we are OK in our back yard and have barbecue and enjoy our life? Build a brick wall around their culture and keep ours? This way we are safe and Iran doing it to defend their population from evil rule? They do not have prostitutes, drung dealers, mafia ganfsters, brothel houses, porn kings and queen, so it is down to them to live and they living according to their holy book teaching?

Yes, as the nation that has used 2 nukes on civilians... invaded and occupied 2 countries killing and wounding over a million people.... yeah that puts us in the position to tell others what to do. As the bullies on the block, we get to do stuff like that. It's why people don't like us

Well if MPs had not voted in favour of the ban to the EU and given the treatment dished out to many at the hands of religious enforcers for disagreeing or speaking out.............need I go on?
