August Landmesser, Hamburg Shipyard Worker Who Refused To Make Nazi Salute (PHOTO)

A photo of a lone man with his arms folded as hundreds around him perform a salute in Nazi Germany has resurfaced.

The snap, taken in 1936, shows August Landmesser defying the status quo as he witnessed the launch of a navy training vessel in Hamburg.

Landmesser himself was not identified until 1991, the Washington Post reported, after one of his children saw the picture in a German newspaper.

The picture came to light again after a blog, launched to support the victims of Japan's 2011 Tohoku earthquake, shared it on a Facebook page, presumably as a symbol of inspiration for those still suffering in the aftermath of the disaster.

The site, named Senrinomichi, says: "The road ahead is a long one, comprised of many small steps, the Japanese people will ensure that the journey is completed to the end."

It also includes a quote by the Chinese philosopher Lao-tzu - "the journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step."

A comment accompanying the Landmesser picture posted on Facebook said: "We know little else about August Landmesser, except that he had two children.

"By pure chance, one of his children recognized her father in this photo when it was published in a German newspaper in 1991. How proud she must have been in that moment."

Landmesser was a former member of the Nazi party but came to oppose Hitler's regime after fathering children with a Jewish woman.

He was found guilty of "dishonouring the race" under Nazi law and bravely revealed his rejection of the doctrine at the launch of the Horst Wessell at Blohm + Voss shipyard.

Landmesser and his wife, Irma Eckler, were jailed by the Gestapo and their children were sent to an orphanage.

He was freed from prison in 1941 but was soon drafted into the war. He was later declared missing in action and was presumed dead.

But his image and reputation remains as that of: "An example of individual courage and conscientious objection."

We even have "troublemakers" today. Take the Republican National Convention, for example:

I remember when my Dad did the goose-step as we walked past a load of Germans waiting in the airport. I have never laughed so much in my life.

HE MUST HAVE HAD SOME VERY POWERFUL FRIENDS IN GERMANY IN 1936 NOT TO
HAVE VANISHED ALONG WITH HIS WIFE AND FAMILY AFTER BEING ARRESTED BY
THE GESTAPO.

This was a very brave act. It was not however as isolated as we've given to believe. The Confessing Church - see Diethrich Bonhoeffer and Marin Niemoller - also staunchly opposed the nazi regime. Many of their members were betrayed then simply and swiftly hung - if they got lucky!
We shuld also remember people like Dr Vernon Jones - Martin Luther King's predecessor at Dexter Avenue Church, Montfgomery , Alabama, these too stod against tyranny.

Just like the union meetings of the 60s. Very difficult not to vote yes for the union's point of view.
This was a very brave man.

If only politicians had the backbone to actually stand against what is wrong and support what is right without cowtowing to their specific 'party line' we could prevent situations like this ever happening again. The power is with the majority, but only if they choose to use it.

I spent many years in Germany and met so many genuine dissenters who suffered so much and many almost died of the brutal treatment received at the hands of the thugs for often little or no reason one gentleman told me he was consigned to Belsen for no more than walking out of a beer hall to use the toilet when Goebels was giving a speech as he acted with disrespect Red xxx

Red, i cannot read the reply you have given to my post, the one where i was answering "researcher" as it has been removed as it was most likley offensive. However re-read my post, then read researchers, i was answering his post asking why he thinks it is wrong for American audiences to stand up and applaud Iraq/Afghan vets. I think you have confused my post answering his comment with the story posted.

I actually think he had a problem with his shoulder this day and was unable to raise his arm for a nazi salute. Hitler was a very charismatic and good leader but it is unfortunate he used his power in such evil ways. Had the original plan of sending the jews to Madagascar gone ahead then this would have been a much more suitable and humane way of dealing with people who cause social and political problems. I also think he should have stuck with his resurrection of Germany rather than trying to dominate europe with the invasion of Czechoslovakia and various other countrys. In some ways Tony blair falls into the category of an evil leader with his deceptive invasion if iraq and in a lot of ways he is no different from hitler . Leaders can use their power for genuine goodness or evil and unfortunately many appear good and disguise their evil intent very well.

Did he not have a positive effect on Germany at some point. It is only my opinion and just as valid as any other. I think Heinrich Himmler was more hell bent on destroying the jews. When you study sociology and understand social strutures such as divide and rule we can see how the masses are controlled by a few. I dont agree with evil acts and i have been to the death camps to witness the desrtruction that the nazis inflicted on the jews and it disgusts me. I do not follow the BNP as i joined for a year and realized the ignorance and blatant lack of any intelligent political solutions. I do however beleive again that the mass uncapped imigration is leading to more people joining extreme partys as this is common in times of recession and hardship and the present government is not helping the situation by still allowoing uncapped immigration. The rich can now get an inferior plumber at at least 20 % cheaper and that applys to lots of jobs. It also means the countrys these migrant workers come from are now lacking in desperately needed skilled workers especially nurses in Africa etc. We have certain groups who wish to impose their laws upon us and no doubt at some point in the future it will happen as a lot of things such as calling a black board a blackboard or the golly wog on the jam jar are now outlawed

live in a council flat, and i rescently exchanged and most the people i tryed to exchange with were non English and one wasnt even living in his flat as i went to look at it and i could see there was no furniture in it. I could go on because i have researched and learnt a lot of truth about these matters and i have also experienced racism as a white person so the fact is some of them dont like us for some reason.. As for your comment, it lacks substance and any sense of debate but attempts to put me down because my views are different.
We pay for translators to accompany people on driving tests to translate the instructors instructions. We have polish men squatting in military accomodation while ex - servicemen are kicked out. I could go on and i will if uou wish and i will provide many facts.
