Peter Jackson has completed the star-studded cast of The Hobbit after signing up Billy Connolly to play a dwarf warrior.

The Gulliver's Travels actor will tackle the role of Dain Ironfoot and joins Sir Ian McKellen, Elijah Wood and Orlando Bloom in the director's Lord of the Rings prequel.

Jackson tells The Hollywood Reporter, "We could not think of a more fitting actor to play Dain Ironfoot, the staunchest and toughest of Dwarves, than Billy Connelly, the Big Yin himself.

"With Billy stepping into this role, the cast of The Hobbit is now complete. We can't wait to see him on the Battlefield!"

The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey is scheduled to hit cinemas in December.

I suspected that Peter Jackson's Tolkien dwarves owed a bit to Terry Pratchett's Discworld before. Now I'm sure of it.

Billy Connolly starred in an old episode of "Columbo" a few months ago and it was the worst piece of acting I have ever seen. He was playing a musician but in the scenes where he was conducting an orchestra he couldn't even move his arms in time to the music, let alone deliver his lines with conviction. Let's hope he's taken some much needed acting lessons since then.

good to see qquality english actors. peter jackson is not into hollywood big heads like leonardo decaprio. elijah wood will again offer honest and gutsy acting as he has no ego like the cast of lotr were like. look forward to an honest film without holywood ruining it like they did with narnia stories
