A young man died after his car collided with a lorry in icy conditions early today.

The collision happened on the A470 in Powys near the Storey Arms between Merthyr Tydfil and Brecon, south Wales, at 6.40am.

The main A470 south Wales valleys road was partly blocked as a result of the accident.

A Dyfed Powys Police spokeswoman said: "Police can confirm that one person has died following an RTC (road traffic collision) on the A470 near Storey Arms involving two vehicles at around 6.40 this morning.

"The deceased is a young man and officers are in the process of contacting next of kin."

The news came as wintry weather is set to again cause widespread disruption across transport routes in England and Wales.

More than two inches (6cm) of snow blanketed some regions and the mercury plunged to -4C last night, and more cold conditions are expected with temperatures plummeting to as low as -9C.

Last night snow began falling in the North and the Midlands before gradually hitting the Home Counties, East Anglia, London, the South East, the South West and Wales.

Victoria Kettley, forecaster at MeteoGroup, the weather division of the Press Association, said: "The snow began around 6pm before intensifying. The heaviest falls were seen over a band covering South Yorkshire and Leicestershire with accumulations of between 5-6cm.

"As the evening progressed the heaviest snow spread southwards before fizzling out towards Wales and the South West."

She added: "The overnight weather means there will be treacherous conditions on the roads this morning as the snow melts and poses the threat of widespread ice on untreated roads."

A "yellow" severe weather warning instructing people to "be aware" of snow and ice in nearly all parts of England as well as south Wales has been issued by the the Met Office. A level three cold weather alert is also in place.

Kettley said snow could return to the South West and Wales today with the rest of the UK remaining dry but bitterly cold.

"There could be temperatures of between -7C to -9C tonight and over the weekend it will be bitterly cold," she said.

"Air temperatures might not get above freezing across the Midlands and East Anglia throughout Saturday, increasing the danger of ice."

This probably wouldnt have happened if winter tyres were mandatory there, like they are here in Sweden.

You make a very fair point there.my wife says the very same she is originally from poland and says if you drive in winter there you need winter tyres not sure whether its law there or not.but i guess if it was to be law here we probably would manage to get around better as well as safer

R I P I know that stretch of road well, like all roads ice can be the main cause of accidents at this time of the year. I skidded off the road on my way back from Cardiff one night when the road conditions were very poor due to ice.

So sad, a dead driver who drove in very poor conditions. There have been so many warnings of poor driving conditions.
Best stay at home and live .

where are the gritting wagons

They have been out; you would have to know the region. The Merthyr-Brecon section of the A470 is a beautiful stretch of road but, when the weather gets bad it is one of the first to close.

Nobody wants to see anyone killed in this weather if you dont need to drive then dont. I live in the North of Scotland and if i have to drive in snow, i keep to a low speed so that i can use the gear's to slow me down, keep the speed down and dont stop on hills if you can good luck my English friend's
