Abu Qatada To Be Released From Long Lartin Prison

Abu Qatada

PA/Huffington Post UK   First Posted: 13/02/2012 10:49 Updated: 13/02/2012 12:07

Radical Muslim cleric Abu Qatada will be released from maximum security Long Lartin prison today, it has been reported.

Government sources have reportedly told the BBC that the cleric will be released later today, although it is unclear when.

Subject to the same restrictions as when he was released on bail in 2008, the 51-year-old must obey a 22-hour curfew and will be prevented from taking his youngest child to school.

It is a small victory for the Home Secretary that the two hours a day in which Qatada will be allowed outside his London home within a prescribed area will not coincide with school opening and closing times.

The cleric, described as "posing a real threat" to Britain's national security, will also have to wear an electronic tag and is banned from using the internet and telephone.

The conditions are some of the toughest imposed since the September 11 terror attacks.

The government has been pushing to deport Qatada to Jordan despite of a ruling by the European Court of Human Rights (ECHR) that said he coud face trial using evidence obtained by torture against him.

Last week, David Cameron and King Abdullah of Jordan agreed on the "importance of finding an effective resolution" to his case.
The Prime Minister told King Abdullah of the "frustrating and difficult" position Britain was in over its efforts to deport the Islamist radical.

Home Office Minister James Brokenshire is also visiting the Jordanian capital, Amman, this week as diplomats try to gain the assurances needed from Jordan before Qatada can be sent home.

The cleric has been held for six-and-a-half years, more than any other detainee in modern immigration history, while fighting deportation.

Downing Street said today that the Government was considering "all the options" for removing Qatada "at the earliest opportunity".

"We will take all measures necessary to protect the public," Prime Minister David Cameron's official spokesman said.

"We are committed to removing him from the country. We want to see him deported and we are looking at all the options for doing that. I'm not going to go into specifics."

He does not have the misfortune to be born a British citizen, experiencing the pleasure and privilege of economic SANCTIONS which I and many other decent hard working people in Britain had imposed upon them by this lunatic British government. So much for our human rights? which are obviously NON existent.

I wish that were the case being a UKIP supporter myself.Truth is the British people have short memories and and come election time the vote for the main 3 lying parties will remain the same.As will the vote for the smaller parties.Very little changes when it comes to voting in Britain, unfortunately.

In response to HisScaliness i say this.... Qatada is a coward who has sought refuge behind the human rights act, something which he has no right to expect, given his total contempt for all who do not think and believe as he does.
The principles he refers to are being applied to the government by persons in Europe, who do not have to live with the consequences of their interpretation of the law. WE DO !
The ECHR was introduced to protect law abiding people around the world from people such as QATADA. Not protect scum like him !
If there was any justice in this country, this miserable excuse for a human, would have been returned to Jordan to account for his crimes there, and NOT protected here, at the expense of law abiding decent folk
11:45 PM on 02/13/2012
........and also OUR judges and OUR courts who uphold OUR principles have said he could be sent home.
10:13 AM on 02/14/2012
And so say all of us!!!
07:23 PM on 02/13/2012
If this man and his family were bundled onto a plane and sent to Jordan just what could the EU courst do to us? A stance has to be made against the courts and this should settle it for once and for all.

Because, just like many reasonable taxpayers, people want to put their point of view across, in the UK police state, which I think is far worse than Russia, we are totally gagged!! I have just made a perfectly sound comment and it has vanished. C'mon HuffPuff - let's get real on this commenting business.

And behold, there you are.
07:01 PM on 02/13/2012
This is a time for Cameron to show some backbone and tell Strasbourg enough is enough we are deporting him its our country and under our laws we will do just that. What can they do /? nothing.

They won't like but tell to deal with it.
08:01 PM on 02/13/2012
You'd deport a man, no matter how unpleasant a man he may be, you'd deport him just for saying stuff? I would remind you that he has spent 6 and a half years in prison, without charge, without bail. His bail conditions now amount to imprisonment. And we haven't charhed him with anything.

Does this not cause you even a slight twinge of unease?
10:09 PM on 02/13/2012
Why should we be any different from other countries who do not allow in or, they deport undesirables. This man is one of the top ten in that category.
These people brain wash young kids to blow themselfs up with as many other people as they can telling them how great they will be, If its that good why dont they do it.
As for your comments re locking people up without trial Better men than you Have said this man is a danger And as such he should be removed to his origin he should not have been locked up costing thousnds.I await to here your comments next time a tube or bus is blown up obviously nothing to do with him much too educated
Re your comment police state They are wrong if they are soft or hard dont know were you are coming from Try China Russia Iran and the list gets bigger.

Yes it does cause people unease,he's still here!An associate of al-Qaeda as decreed by the UN.Not an innocent missunderstood man with a different take on life as some on these boards make out,but a dangerous jihadist.
06:58 PM on 02/13/2012
I thought all these people were the nice guys being persecuted
06:53 PM on 02/13/2012
I can only agree with an earlier poster...........Deliver him straight to the Strasburg court......let them put up with his ranting and evil teachings..........also ALL benefits to both him and his family should be stopped immediately......we don't want them here.
06:50 PM on 02/13/2012
Can't wait to follow him home and nail him to his front door.
06:49 PM on 02/13/2012
All we ever do as nation is talk talk talk about this stupid human rights rubbish the way it is at the moment, I think it is becoming time for some sort of action and I DONT mean violence that solves nothing, There are lots of other ways just think about it !
08:05 PM on 02/13/2012
Oh no, it would be much better if you told us what you think.
06:46 PM on 02/13/2012
Can't this goverment get anything right.spineless. We lock up old people who can't pay their council tax or put their bins out on the wrong day, but we let this terrorist walk the streets. says it all about this once great country.
07:28 PM on 02/13/2012
Ah another socialist with a short memory. This government, and we the people, are now saddled with Labour's capitulation to Europe. Blair willing to sign away our rights so he could have a crack at President of the EU. We are now paying the price for yet another socialist failure.
08:06 PM on 02/13/2012
Perhaps you missed the salient point, he hasn't been "walking the streets" for more than 6 years. He's been locked up without trial. And he isn't "walking the streets" now - he's under house arrest.

And while the stuff he is alleged to have said is certainly repugnant, I'm not aware he's actually DONE anything.
07:18 PM on 02/14/2012
You should be his legal representative, he was spreading death to all the "Infidels", your one of them, was warned and sent to jail where you and him should be, with him(to Jordan)
06:25 PM on 02/13/2012
Well, we should all be safe. After all we are going to be protected by Ali Dizaei's chums in the Metropolitan Police if they can spare the time from mob-handed dawn raids on Sun journalists aren't we ?.
06:40 PM on 02/13/2012
You mean the same Ali Dizaei that has been sentenced to four years for misconduct and perverting the course of justice???
06:17 PM on 02/13/2012
How about delivering him to the Court Of Human Rights in Strasbourg......Then they can keep him safe.......
