More than 100,000 people have signed an online petition urging the government to abandon the Health and Social Care Bill.

In the latest sign of public opposition to Health Secretary Andrew Lansley's beleaguered NHS reforms, the e-petition has been attracting signatures at a rate of more than 1,000 an hour.

By 10.30pm last night, it had received the support of 107,000 people and was continuing to grow. It will now be considered for debate in the Commons by the Backbench Business Committee.

The petition was tabled by GP Kailash Chand.

Despite anger from health professionals and patient groups - and private criticism of the bill by Tory Cabinet ministers - Prime Minister David Cameron is pressing ahead with the legislation.

But shadow health secretary Andy Burnham said the petition's signatories had "sent a very clear message" that the Government should scrap the bill.

"They want him to listen and stop putting his political pride before the best interests of the NHS," he said.

"Mr Cameron wants to legislate to turn our NHS into a free market. He is being reminded in no uncertain terms that he does not have the public's permission to do this.

"Nobody voted for this reorganisation and Mr Cameron promised it would not happen."

He urged people to keep signing the petition, adding: "The 'Drop the Bill' call is turning into a deafening cry supported by patients, professions and even members of Mr Cameron's Cabinet. It is a fight we can and must win."

Downing Street on Monday dismissed suggestions that Mr Lansley should be sacked and insisted ministers were "fully behind" his NHS reforms.

Cameron is to launch a new offensive to sell the bill to the public. He said at the weekend he was "at one" with Mr Lansley and the legislation amid signs of deep unease with the bill among Tory Cabinet ministers and even Number 10 insiders.

Labour said yesterday that internal NHS risk reports warned of lower levels of safety and patient care under the proposed reforms.

Burnham said officials in London were warning of "preventable harm to children".

"You know something is seriously amiss when NHS London has identified a risk of 'preventable harm to children' but has been unable to reduce it," he said.

"That should surely be a sign that it's time to listen to the view of health professionals that it's safer to abandon the reorganisation than press on.

I have signed the petition - nothing is final until it is signed off and this bill has not been signed off yet -it can still be defeated if people want it to be.. No point lobbying the Tories as they want the NHS Privatised - only by complaining and lobbying the LibDems will this bill be defeated - they are the key to this, if they don't change their minds and oppose it then we all know that they are not worth voting for every again!!!

I was awarded a position within the health service a number of years ago, it was the shortest of my career. The position was mis-sold, the bureaucracy unbearable and the senior management totally out of their depth. The NHS needs serious change, though I'm not sure the Coalition plan is the right choice, I wonder how many billion pound businesses Lansley has turned around for the better. Yet the government thinks he is the right man for the job, "makes I laugh it do!"

the 'honourable' andrew lansley has recieved tens of thousands of pounds from the director of a PRIVATE medical care group. and now he is charge of the NHS he is pushing through these reforms against the wishes of just about everyone in the U.K. Time to pay the piper mr lansley. Those tens of thousands of pounds will be more than repaid when private companies are making hundreds of millions in profits on the back of the NHS, who we the taxpayer (i.e. decent working class people , not rich tax evaders) will be paying for. Shame on you AND your corrupt self serving Gov't Mr Lansley.

Would it be correct to say that Cameron and his government can,t back down over the NHS? - they have already disbanded/paid off many of the PCT's officials in advance of new legislation( ie redundancies etc). The cost to the taxpayer to reverse the government's current decisions would be too high a price for Cameron et al to pay!!

If that is the case, they're stealing money from Britain again.

Give the remit of the NHS to the Army Medical Services, and restore hands on care ,and the removal of non-medical do gooding penpushers with a Health and Safety mentality.

Shouldn't have had to wait for a petition which I signed as well as some the other people who have posted on here.

This is a British democracy. Your opinion doesn't count.

When are they going to get it in their thick heads we dont want it

Well done to everybody who, like me, signed the petition. Yes I know we've probably not got much chance of this so called Government of ours listening to a mere 100,000+ who bothered to sign and the nurses, doctors etc etc who are against the proposals. But at least I and the other members of 38 degrees didn't just sit on our ar**s and do nothing.....we tried! We need more to sign......let's have a go at 1 million!!!

Abolish the House of Lords and put all the money saved into the Health Service.

They'll probably put a three line whip on again.
