Airport Eye Scanners Scrapped At Manchester And Birmingham Airports

Airport Eye Scanners Scrapped

First Posted: 16/02/2012 14:57 Updated: 16/02/2012 15:17   PA

High-tech eye scanners designed to reduce the time taken for passengers to enter the UK have been scrapped at two airports and closed to anyone who has not already registered, the UK Border Agency (UKBA) said.

The future of the Iris Recognition Immigration System (Iris), which has been criticised for adding to delays rather than cutting queues, is being reviewed and the system has already been scrapped at both Manchester and Birmingham airports.

It has also been closed to all new applicants since last year, but will remain open for registered passengers travelling through terminals, 1, 3, 4 and 5 at Heathrow Airport and Gatwick North until after the Olympic and Paralympic Games this summer, the UKBA said.

A UKBA spokesman said: "With electronic passport gates now operating at 15 of the country's busiest airport terminals and available to millions of biometric passport holders, Iris is just one of the options for travellers to securely enter the UK.

"We are currently reviewing the long-term future of Iris."

On its website, the UK Border Agency (UKBA) added: "Iris is no longer available at Birmingham and Manchester airports."

It went on: "Registration for Iris is no longer available.

"All of our enrolment rooms at Heathrow, Gatwick, Birmingham and Manchester airports are closed until further notice."

The Iris scheme was criticised five years ago when an official report on trials of the technology showed it had failed half of its assessments.

I've worked in the IT industry for over 20 years, and looking back at the long, long list of expensive failures in government IT procurement (police, hospitals, HMRC, etc etc etc) just makes me angry. There should be a fully independent professional body handling all software and hardware specification for government IT projects & successful bidders for contracts should be held to their quotations as part of the contract, with mandatory insurance required to pay for fines in the event of non-compliance or under-performance.

So will they charge you less for your passport now that biometrics are pointless.

A clear case of the airports and the Iris Recognition Immigration System failing to see 'Eye to eye'

What a shame..Have used the IRIS system every time I have arrived back in the UK..As people say, all you have to get is a couple of 747's full of people and it can be a nightmare...As said, we seem to be going backwards here, instead of protecting our borders..It will be back to long long queues ..PLEASE re-consider.....

Human Wrongs win again!! This country is going Backwards in time!! We are almost a 3rd World Country!

Wrong WE ARE A 3RD WORLD COUNTRY

Oh! The illiteracy and outright insanity of posters on this website. I would ask how exactly are we a third world country? And how are we going backwards in time. Do you mean because the Iris system failed to be efficient? If that is the case then I would put it to you that it is people like you that help to keep the average I.Q below that of America and our economy will fare no better with people like you in employment.

we are an insult to a third country

I used IRIS at Birmingham regularly with it only once not working. Most of my regular flights were from Brussels and quite often coincided with an Air Pakistan arrival and in Summer, charter flights, so being able to bypass the normal queues was great. The flight time from Brussels is 1 hr so standing in the queue sometimes for 20 mins+ is no joke. I dont have an electronic passport and it is not renewable for another 3 years, why should I have to pay £77.50 to get a biometric passport before my existing one becomes renewable.

This is a very good point.

Why not write to your MP suggesting that biometric passports are used free of charge for existing IRIS users.

Perhaps the Huffington Post could take this up as an issue. It would more useful than publisicing the unwanted opinions of an obscure American actor.

If you renew your passport early they add the existing time to the end.

If it failed due to software problems the Govt should sue the manufactor, though often the way how contract is given is by the "old boys network"

Whatever happened to penalty clauses in contracts?

Pity - in view of the Immigration desks at Manchester being so frequently under-staffed, we always found the Iris recognition a time-saver.

Another waste of money!!

It was always going to be.
Nice profits for the provider and the various authorities involved had enough warning when the device kept failing, of course if they cancelled they would look stupid.....
