NHS Reforms: More Than Half Of Voters Want To See Changes Dropped

PA/The Huffington Post UK   First Posted: 21/02/2012 05:46 GMT Updated: 21/02/2012 05:46 GMT

More than half of all voters believe the Government should drop its controversial NHS reforms, according to a new opinion poll.

An ICM poll for The Guardian found 52% believed the Health and Social Care Bill should be dropped as against 33% who said the Government should press ahead with the legislation.

The findings suggest the row over the Bill may be damaging the coalition with the support for the Conservatives dropping from 40% to 36% - four points down on last month - while the Liberal Democrats were down two points on 14%.

Labour, in contrast, has now overtaken the Tories rising to 37% - a two point increase on the previous month.

The government is likely to come under further pressure today when Health Secretary Andrew Lansley faces health questions in the House of Commons.

David Cameron yesterday insisted he was "committed" to pushing through the reforms - designed to hand greater financial powers to doctors - accusing opponents of peddling "myths" about their impact on the NHS.

The prime minister came under fire for excluding critics of the legislation from a No 10 summit on the issue while Lansley was jostled and barracked by protesters as he entered Downing Street.

On Monday Andrew Lansley was confronted with a small but very vocal demonstration outside Downing Street on Monday morning, as he attempted to make his way into No.10 for a summit on his unpopular health reforms.

Labour leader Ed Miliband said the meeting - to which a string of high-profile professional bodies were not invited - exposed a "bunker
mentality" by ministers.

He renewed demands for the Bill, currently enduring a stormy passage through Parliament, to be dropped altogether and fresh reforms drawn up with professionals.

I have to attend Hospital quite frequently due to a number of issues including cancer. We are told there will be not cuts to the NHS so why has my Hospital Transport service just been stopped?
I will now need 6 bus rides to get there and back.

Whatever Britain does, please do not adopt America's health "care" non-system where health care is rationed based on ability to pay.

A team of 5 trained tele-operatives at 40 contacts per day could complete this work in 5 days .

The survey shows 52% don't want it???? I can't find one person that does want it; I would suggest the poll, (which was a very small sample,) is seriously flawed.... on a major issue such as this Pollsters should not be allowed to publish results.

It was for the Guardian ... enough said ...!!

It's amazing that, out of a population of nearly 70 million, only 527 complained ... now, that is a result ... !!

The Guardian - that Socialist rag - so a survey shows 52% against the desparately needed changes to the NHS does it! Well I for one don't believe that for one minute. The NHS is a very good service and I have nothing but praise for the staff but over the last 20 years or so the NHS has become the woese for ware, Labour threw Taxpayers money at it without tackling the urgent modernisation that is necessary. Cameron is right on this one and I cannot see him being made to do a u-turn!
07:28 AM on 02/22/2012
I agree.... the NHS has become a little worse the wear and does need tidying up, so lets just do that.
Let's not completely take apart the national 'agency' that we know works and has saved so many lives, including mine, on more than one occasion.
There are huge problems within Government, at present (particularly with politicians,) so can we set about righting those with a complete rebuilt instead?
The Government are struggling to find enough to occupy themselves that will justify diversion away from the real issues of the Country, I suggest a Meccano outfit number 10 for each member bought out of expenses of course.

Labour bought the votes of NHS workers when they increased their pay and conditions for doing less. No , I am not a Tory or a Lib Dem supporter.

And you know this is true because?

It's always been the case. Labour depended on the loyal suppport of the public sector and those on benefits to stay in power.

Labour are scum ...

A bit of a telltale sign that things are not right in the NHS is that nurses need training in 'how to be compassionate'. I doubt anybody could sort out the NHS without upsetting someone.

Clegg remains silent... the deal they made to join the coalition has finished the Liberals for ever.

Still whining about Clegg?

Labour could have formed a coalition with them and others but Labour tribalists like John Reid and Dianne Abbott would hear of it.
04:46 PM on 02/21/2012
More than half the voters did not want Cameron and Clegg in the first place, but no doubt they will do the usual u-turn and say it's because the are a listening government.

Not a statement of support for the government, but if you add the 37% the Conservatives received with the 23% the Liberal Democrats received, that would be a coalition representing 60% of the vote. Granted, I guess you could argue that many of those who voted for the Liberal Democrats would not have voted for them if they knew that sort of coalition were feasible. However, even at 14% of the vote today in the polls, you add 37% plus 14% and you still get 51% of the vote.

It is certainly arguable that most Liberal Democrats would have preferred to coalition with Labour, but Labour tribalists like David Blunkett refused to even consider it.
07:19 PM on 02/22/2012
Thank you for the percentages but only 37% voted for Cameron and only 23% voted for Clegg no-one voted for the two of them together therefore you cannot say that 60% of the electorate voted to have a coalition.
09:47 PM on 02/22/2012
And of course 60% of the voters who cast their votes didn't want Labour!

If the government presses on with this, there's a real chance they'll lose the next election. Most working and middle class people deplore the idea of what will be effectively part privatising the NHS. Whilst reforms are needed, opening it up so private and NHS patients compete for the same resources may lead to a two tier public health service.

Hmmmm.... they will definitely loose the next election.

...Yes'..I think Lansley and CaMoron' have bitten off too much this time..I think they are doomed'...But by the time of the election'...There will be nothing left to save...We can't wait that long...The NHS' is on a life support machine esp' with the uncertainty and costcutting going on '..even as we speak'..You can't trust the Tories' with OUR NHS'...Never could'...Never will..
12:25 AM on 02/23/2012
Yeah ... Milliband and Balls-Up will really make an impression on the voters ... dream on sunshine ...
11:06 PM on 02/21/2012
And maybe when these changes show that they were actually vital to modernise the NHS the Conservatives will walk the election in 2015 and the next one in 2020 as well!

The only things it's vital for it's opening up a public service to private profit. And that's never been done badly in the past, has it?
03:11 PM on 02/21/2012
Too right. As we all know, any change is bad. Just keep doing it the way grandpa did
