David Cameron Vows To 'Crush Racism In Football'

David Cameron

Swift action is required to "crush" any return of racism to football before it impacts on wider society, Prime Minister David Cameron said today.

The PM said he had seen for himself the influence that behaviour on the pitch could exercise over young children and others off it.

But, speaking at the opening of a Downing Street anti-discrimination summit with former players and football bosses, he expressed confidence that the good work of two decades in battling prejudice in the sport would not be lost.

Mr Cameron said: "If everyone plays their role, then we can easily crush and deal with this problem."

He told the panel, including former England stars John Barnes and Graeme Le Saux, that he often took his young son to local football matches and had seen the impact the game had.

"What happens on the field influences what happens off the field. You see children as young as six imitating the behaviour they see on the field," said Mr Cameron.

ITV experienced an on-air snafu covering the subject:

We apologise for the inappropriate use of the word “coloured” in a report on racism and football in today’s News at 1:30pm

"So this is not just important for football, it's important for the whole country."

The Prime Minister said there were many "extraordinary role models" among professional footballers but that problems with racism had "crept back in".

"We want to make sure football is all about a power to do good, rather than anything else," he said.

Will football ever be free of racism?

Why stop at racism in football? Racism has no place anywhere in society! We can all do our bit, whether you are standing at the match and the bigot beside you is using racist comments or anywhere else. If you aren't part of the cure, then you are part of the problem.

I doubt if this idiot even knows what shape a football is.
03:52 on 23/02/2012
He isn't concerned about the shape- apparently just the colour?

Much ado about nothing ! I am afraid that our country has far more pressing problems than racism in football and resources are being wasted by the pc brigade once again.May not suit some people but the truth often offends

While Cameron was 'vowing' to 'crush' racism, I imagine he made a fist with one hand and swept his cloak behind him with the other, Ming the Merciless style.

If he spoke like a super-villain all the time I would consider voting for him.

Perhaps Cameron could crush out some of the latent racists in his party

English Football is miles better than what it used to be, and it is still far better off than countries like Italy or Spain.

National and local identities are the problem. So lets stop all the international matches, make all teams play in the same colour kit ( One team in pink the other team in blue) regardless of history and long standing tradition, and the referees can wear any neutral coloured kit (Not black or white)
Fans will wear -Normal clothing and be banned from scarves, hats, shirts or rattles that identify whom they support.
Chanting any type of song or phrase will be punishable by a life ban.
Polite clapping for a goal or a good save will be permitted as long as all supporters contribute to the mild applause.
And football will die!

If you don't want to vote for BNP or UKIP, please have a look at the manifestos of Britain First and English Democrats. For heaven's sakes please don't vote for Labour Liberal or Conservatives!
