Cameron Hauled Back To Commons Seat After PMQs To Answer Labour MP Julie Hilling's Complaint

Prime Minister David Cameron was made to explain himself in the Commons on Wednesday after PMQs, because of a complaint from a Labour MP.

Bolton West MP Julie Hilling complained that the Prime Minister was wrong to describe her as “sponsored by Unite”, when answering a question from her at Prime Minister’s Questions.

Cameron was dragged back to his seat as he tried to leave, to answer the alleged factual inaccuracy. Labour MPs howled in protest as the PM tried to exit the chamber behind the Speaker's chair.

He defended himself by quoting the Register of Members’ Interests. He said that Hilling had received £2,250 from the trade union in 2010, and a similar donation to her constituency office.

John Bercow told Hilling that he didn’t feel being “sponsored” by Unite was a matter to be considered by the Speaker as a point of order.

The reality is slightly more complex. Unite was not Hilling's largest donor, that comes from another union, the Transport Salaried Staffs Association, who gave her £7,000 in 2010. Unite gave the Labour MP £2,250. Both of these are listed as "sponsorships" in Hilling's register of MPs interests.

This is confirmed on Parliament's website, where Unite's donation is clearly listed as a sponsorship.

Tory MP Matthew Hancock has recently unearthed further evidence of Hilling's relationship with Unite:

Matthew Hancock
Hansard of Julie Hilling declaring her interest in Unite the union, to her Select Ctte - why hide at PMQs?

And a quick search of Hansard shows that in November 2010 Julie Hilling said in a Westminster Hall debate on the Youth sector:

"I have a vested interest in this debate, in that I have spent almost all my working life as a youth and community worker, and Unite supported me in my election campaign."

However speaking to Politicshome.com Hilling has insisted that this money does not constitute sponsorship. She said: "That is like saying if a Tory gets a donation from a business, he is sponsored by them."

She is obviously ashamed to be associated with Unite, thats why she is distancing herself from them.

I supose Cameron does not consider donations from millionairs and bankers to the Tory party as sponsership..

What is the differance between getting money from the unions or a rich businessman, who will also probably want something in return, are all the Tory donors whiter than white. How many Tory donors get seats in the house of lords, for their services. Camerons only policy of defence, is to demonize anybody that disagrees with him.

Agreed. Every party has been bankrolled to a large extent, Tories especially. So Cameron is being a 'walking contradiction' as usual!

The question is not about her being supported by Unite, but about her making an issue when that fact was brought to light. She, like all members of parliament, has listed her supporters in the list of members intrests, and in other debates announced her intrest in Unite. But when the PM mentioned that she had a financial support intrest in Unite, she objected. What is her problem with the PM speaking the truth?

Because the Tory economic policies only help the bankers , the super rich and millionairs. who give money to the tory party, cameron sees nothing wrong in that while demonizing unions and who they give support to.

Stop demonising Unions. They got you your workers rights. If you do not agree with unions, give back all the rights that were won for ALL workers. Even those critisizing them.

Unite give Labour MP £2,250.....

Wife of the Chairman of the Private Heathcare compny donates £21,000 to Mr Lansley's personal office......

Who got the better deal?
04:25 on 01/03/2012
Are both donations listed in the list of member's intrests? If so, there is no difference. If the member announces their intrest when the speak on an issue, like the rules state, then there is no problem. When a member of the house complains because another member of the house points out their listed intrests, then the problem is with the complaining member. Why is she ashamed that she has listed Unite as one of her financial backers?

The time as come to stop all donations to all sides and stop lobbying by unions, business national and foreign and lobbying firms. A few pounds can buy their intrest but a petition signed by over 160 thounsand citizens of the UK can be ignored. How do these MP's represent.

Sorry typo How should read Who

The Tories can't tell the difference between supporting and sponsoring. They never could. Not for others anyway. Here's a handy guide: They are SUPPORTED by right-wing, tax-avoiding and evading billionaires, some of whom own newspapers to further their political aims by fooling their gullible readers into voting against their own interests; they are SPONSORED by the Mail, Sun and Express.

Unite? Mr Cameron how many in the ConDem Alliance is sponsored by the Zionist? how mush do Mr Hague get from them? how mush do your party get from them, that result in our mad foreign policies that is causing death and distruction?
20:14 on 29/02/2012
Whats mush?
20:22 on 29/02/2012
Point, but you get my drift

It will take over from the euro
19:15 on 29/02/2012
Cameron was actuallly scoring a 'cheap point'... If we look carefully at 'Members Interests' we'll find any number of our MPs - who draw half decent salaries don't forget - have income supplements far larger than the sums Julie Hilling is ever likely to see.
Its once again the 'Ruling class' having ine rule for them and one rule for all else....

Typical LaShe announces Labour double talk. She announces that she is supported by the union, she lists the union on her sponsorship list, and then claims that she is not sponsored when PM points it out during question time. Just like the rest of the party she cannot tell the truth when it is a part of the record she created, just as the Eds cannot tell the truth about their part in economice melt down under Brown.

Yet another politically scewed headline.
The complaint was baseless and the whole thing was an attention grab by a struggling labour MP.
Cameron did nothing wrong apart from drawing attention to the 'Vested interest' the MP had in the question.
"Cameron retort puts down stroppy mendicant" would have been a better headline.
Suspension for misleading the house would be 'In order' for the less than honourable Julie Gilling!

A bit rich from a party owned by an absentee tax "avoider"
16:56 on 29/02/2012
So we might as well say that the whole of the Tory party is sposered by the private medical groups, banks and othe large businesses
