Secret Diary Of A Call Girl Blamed For Increase In Medic Students Working In Sex Trade To Pay For University

Prostitution

Medic students are increasingly turning to the sex trade to pay for university tuition fees, a survey has found.

One in 10 trainee doctors claim to know peers prostituting themselves in order to fund their studies. The figure is more than twice as high as it was 10 years ago, when only 4% said they knew of someone working in the industry.

An editorial in the Student British Medical Journal (BMJ) blamed the Secret Diary of a Call Girl drama, starring Billie Piper, for the rise in numbers.

"Students in the UK may view prostitution as an easy way to get rich quick," medical student Jodi Dixon writes. "This view could be fuelled by recent coverage of prostitution in the media.

"Danger is never an issue [for Piper's character] and she oozes glamour and sophistication. The show makes prostitution seem alluring, because Belle seems to enjoy her job."

Dixon suggests a "direct association" between the rise in prostitution and the rise in tuition fees - although these are yet to come into effect.

A report published in 2010 by four academics revealed more than 25% of students at a London university knew a fellow student working in the industry, with 10% claiming they knew someone who had worked as a prostitute or escort.

"Results suggested awareness of student sex work was widespread and considered understandable by the majority," the Sex Education publication said. "A relatively high proportion (16.5%) indicated they would be willing to engage in sex work to pay for their education."

The report adds: "Sex work is established as a relatively well-paid occupation, which would permit students to have more money and time for studies than the poorly paid jobs usually available."

Prostitution was cited as the fourth most common type of sex work, after pole or lap dancing and stripping. Out of those surveyed, more than nine in 10 said they thought the main reason for students entering the trade were for financial reasons.

In December 2011, Estelle Hart, the National Union of Students' women's officer, warned students were taking "more dangerous measures" to fund their education, but the evidence was merely anecdotal.

A Department for Education spokesman said at the time the government was targeting £180 million a year in financial support to "the most vulnerable 16 to 19-year-olds to help them continue their studies".

"It is down to schools and colleges themselves to award bursaries to young people who need the most help. If students are really struggling financially, they need to speak directly to their tutors."

There were more concerns of students turning to "informal work" after John Specht, vice-president of Spearmint Rhino, was accused of encouraging cash-strapped students to enter the stripping industry.

The English Collective of Prostitutes (ECP) said the number of calls they had received from students had "at least doubled," particularly after the government's announcement of the future tuition fee increase.

The article in the Student BMJ highlighted the lack of support for medical students - or indeed any students.

Sue Grant, college student services manager at Birmingham University's medical school is quoted saying: "There is no policy or guidance from the medical school about students working as prostitutes."

CORRECTION: Previously we stated: "The figure is more than twice as high as it was 10 years ago, when only four in 10 said they knew of someone working in the industry." We have now amended this to: "The figure is more than twice as high as it was 10 years ago, when only 4% said they knew of someone working in the industry."

I want to know what the difference is between a girl getting a meal/movie or drinks paid for because of a sexual encounter or a poor girl paying her way through college? Imo women do it on a regular basis, people just do not call it prostitution because they are only getting drinks or a meal! Who cares how these girls pay for it, It is their body, their life and their choice. More power to them if they can pay for the over priced tuition this way!

Oh, come on! This entire article is a bit of a stretch. Somewhere, right now, a young, pretty college girl is out on a dinner date doing half of what you describe in this article and doing it under the classification of "normal dating rituals" with the expectation that she will get something monetary for her time (perhaps just dinner, but maybe help with her rent or tuition) and we are not saying she is in the sex trade!

I can`t say that I like it or agree with it, but its the worlds oldest profession and no matter what you do it will always continue in one form or another. In Holland and Germany many students do the same thing, but over there it is regulated and registered with the state. The sex industry pays taxes to the government and as a result the workers are protected by the police and have medical help. In the UK it is not illegal to be a prostitute. You can work legally if you have a room and you work alone, any more than this is regarded as being a brothel and is illegal. You cannot solicit the streets for business either which upsets local residents and public decency. Ok if its going to happen lets do it right. Have it registered as a business, let them operate on industrial estates away from the general public. This will not only protect the girls, make the streets cleaner and safer but also end the illegal sex slaves being brought into the UK because people will not have to use them if they have a legal establishments. They can also pay taxes into the economy. In Holland the sex industry pays more into the country in taxes than Edam cheese. I hate to think of girls having to do this but maybe it is time to look at it from a different angle.

Sex has always been the preferred currency for anything from drinks and restaurant meals to jewelery and cars, women are just a bit more open about it these days.

In the UK, people take easy degrees in Dance and Media Studies and wonder why they cannot get a job. Some of them would be better off training as plumbers and electricians.

I have known of people who are students for decades, sponging of the state doing nothing of any use to anyone. And making out they are intellectual, special and intelligent at the same time. Yet they have no common sense and rely on the state to pay all of the bills. Like you say it makes more sense to train to be a plumber but they want to be posh and superior and by going to college they can appear to be that without actually achieving a thing other than spending your taxes.

I know of people like that too. They are professional students with Phd's and spend their time off from their university jobs going on pilgrimages to places like Cuba to indentify with the Marxist cause. They have been in France for months now writing a book which they hope to sell, all paid for by the taxpayer.

It's happening on this side of the pond too, but at least your students are pursuing worthwhile degrees. There are students here who spend thousands for a degree in Art History, then wonder why they can't find a job.

If this is even half true its a sad state of affairs..but not completely surprising considering the way the government treats its citizens anyway

I'd rather believe the down-turn in tution-fees & desperate measures, as opposed to a TV programme for this finding.

to be hoped when they qualify they dont bring loads of medical problems to thier patients.whats wrong with working like other kids in bars and shops to get the money do they think they are better ???
11:28 AM on 03/01/2012
By all means go and work in a shop two days a week for peanuts if you want to. It is up to them how they earn a living. Obvously one hour of prostitution can earn as much as two days in a shop, so that answers why they prefer it. How would you like to be going to college, studying, vsiting family and working in a shop part time? There would not be enough hours in the day.
12:18 PM on 03/01/2012
There has always been the same number of hours in the day and people had no problems in the past, I knew a student who had four jobs.

I read one report over year ago about this story and like every thing else AOL giving this news little late like always. Nothing new really
