Len McCluskey Strike Threat Attacked By David Cameron As 'Unacceptable And Unpatriotic'

Unite general secretary Len McCluskey's threat of strike action during the London Olympics is "completely unacceptable and unpatriotic", Prime Minister David Cameron's official spokesman said today.

McCluskey, general secretary of Unite, told the Guardian that unions could stage industrial action as part of their campaign against Government cuts.

He called for the public to engage in civil disobedience to defend public services during the fortnight of sport this summer.

Responding to his comments, Prime Minister David Cameron's official spokesman said: "The Olympics are a great opportunity for this country to show everything that is great about the United Kingdom and advertise ourselves to the world.

"It is completely unacceptable and unpatriotic what he is proposing. Most people in this country, including members of that union, think the Olympics is a great occasion for the country and wouldn't want to see anything happen that would disrupt it in any way."

Mr McCluskey's comments were also condemned by Labour leader Ed Miliband, whose party is largely funded by union donations.

"Any threat to the Olympics is totally unacceptable and wrong," said Mr Miliband.
"This is a celebration for the whole country and must not be disrupted."

TUC head Brendan Barber said Britain's unions had been "strong supporters" of the Olympics and wanted a games "of which we can all be proud": "The TUC and Britain’s unions have been strong supporters of the London Olympics. This was reflected in the agreement we reached with London2012 in 2008, which included proper procedures for the speedy resolution of any disputes should any arise during the Games themselves.

“Unions have engaged constructively with the Olympic authorities throughout the whole project to ensure the good working conditions that are helping deliver the Games on time and on budget. We also want to see a great Games that delivers a proper legacy of jobs and regeneration.

“Of course unions seek fair reward for the extra work and long hours that will be required during what will be the busiest ever time for public transport and other public services, and not all such negotiations have been concluded. But of course unions want a Games of which we can all be proud.”

As usual, Twitter reaction was varied:

Baroness Warsi says Len McCluskey's call for strikes during the Olympics is "deeply selfish".

Ian Sharpe
How is Len McCluskey unpatriotic? (According to no. 10) He's defending poorly paid British people. Typical Tory nonsense.

Gareth McLean
Dear Everyone Getting Indignant About Len McCluskey, Would you mind getting furious about the Tory threat to the NHS instead? Thankssomuch.

Earlier, Nick Clegg has called on Labour leader Ed Miliband to "rein in" Len McCluskey after the union leader called for civil disobedience during the Olympic Games.

The Deputy Prime Minister said he believed people would be "gobsmacked" and "appalled" by Mr McCluskey's call for the public to engage in civil disobedience to defend public services during the fortnight of sport this summer.

"I just think people will be gobsmacked, appalled, that someone thinks that at a time when we are finally hosting one of the greatest events in the world, he is calling for civil disobedience," he told ITV Daybreak.

"I know he is the sort of paymaster of the Labour Party but I hope Ed Miliband will rein him in."

I have access to several left wing and anarchist forums and blogging sites and Len McCluskey's comments are echoed throughout these forums by lots of anonymous and vociferous people using various pseudonims. Dare I say that some of the people on these forums may be union representatives who are looking to stir up trouble without looking to be directly involved? When I saw Mr McCluskeys comments my first thought was "Isn't that incitement?" Then I wondered how he would like it if I, and some of my associates, decided to go to his plush home and start trashing his property and camping on his lawn, using his rosebeds as a toilet?

the olympics are going to cost this country deaarly for years. so you think these cuts are harsh wait until the government get the bill. then taxes will have to rise, vat, and more cuts probably aimed at the disabled. drop in wages for many and higher tax on petrol. then you will see why so many people who will be affected by the games and can see this coming aren't proud of this country. i have lost all hope of life ever getting better. and the olympic torch will be lit and kept burning by £50.00 notes.

David Cameron states "it is completely unacceptable and unpatriotic what he is proposing", so is imposing SANCTIONS on hard working law-abiding British born citizens and refusing them the right to obtain British passports, but obviously this is "everything that is great about the United Kingdom" or LA(Lunatic Asylum)?

I would be happy to do without the Olympics completely. It's time the unions withdrew all funding from Labour. No one else give them money so they would be bankrupt.
If unions want political representation they should try the SNP or the Greens, anyone but Labour

Do i dare to assume Mr McCluskey will have access to free VIP tickets/corporate/business Olympic tickets that he and the many £100k a year plus Union leaders enjoy every year at UK sporting events?

Union leaders, like the Labour Party, are so far away from the real world, that they can ONLY react to situations, or hurl abuse at anyone "opposed" to their way of thinking instead of planning and talking and offereing new solutions to our nations problems.

Take a 50% pay cut mate and employ a nurse instead.......then i may believe your paper posturing!

Mr Cameron, take it from someone who is sitting outside the rose coloured crystal palace, neither you or any other ConLibLab politician has the right to call anyone unpatriotic unless looking in a mirror.

You can't get more unpatriotic than Cameron passing making carriage parts to Germany and ship building abroad when we have so many people out of work and could have made them better in this country. I agree with Len McCluskey we should stay away from the games. They are being held in our country but we are only getting a very small amout of ticket allocation. Most of the tickets are going to dignatries from abroad I''D LIKE TO KNOW WHO IS MAKING MONEY FROM THAT

Think lots of folk on here are missing a few issues - McCluskey will leave his podium at any conference and jolly well jaunt off to have lunch dinner and drinks with the MP's currently in power - it is a power game and ultimately he couldn't give a monkeys hoot about those paying their subs. He has climbed the greasy pole and sits with the masters - when was the last time he sat down and talked to a shopfloor worker, or had a sandwich with him/her - nope too busy travelling to the London and claiming everything he can, same as those in power. How about people coming to the UK during the Olympics and thinking, wow this is efficient, lets bring work here!! Nope, he'd rather they all arrived late, if at all, and showed them what a sh!thole he has created by striking!

Men like McCluskey are here because individuals need to be brought together to form masses, in order to be heard. Failing to have people like him, an individuals right to be heard will fizzle out on boards like this. The government would like to abolish unions because without a union, any people questioning the will of the government would just be arrested as a dissident. The only democracy which has to be allowed in this country is the general election, and look what happened at the last one.

Totally agree with you but the problem we have now is these people are more interested in lining their own pockets and appeasing the government who pay them to keep quiet. McCluskey is no more interested in the average worker than John Prescott. Every now and again they get vocal to let the union members think they are doing it for them when in fact they are getting their feet well and truly under the table of management. I do, however, not have a solution to this cronyism :/

I'll tell you what's unfrikkingpatriotic- grinding down the NHS into a shadow of its former self, trying to flog off the national forests, selling every utility into the hands of foreigners, bending over backwards to accommodate the US, making up stories about WMD and sending British men and women out to fight and die in some godforsaken desert, MPs at the trough pigging it down whilst the soup kitchens (even in Surrey!) are filling up, spending £30k per year so MPs can eat their din-dins in the shade of fig trees, stripping down our Navy to three rubber dinghies and a snorkel, trying to make it easier for employers to sack people when employers are already itching to hire cheap foreign replacements, handing out billions and billions to Ireland, Portugal, increased contributions to every other foreign pot except the British one, spending £4 million a week to bomb Libya yet closing down basic services for the vulnerable in the community and trying to peddle propaganda that the elderly are "selfish" for not moving out of their homes into a nursing home. HOW DARE YOU CAMERON and your little sidekick he-who-hangs-off-tory-coat-tails. It's the government of this country that is unpatriotic.

Here's an interesting fact - the UK NHS is the THIRD LARGEST EMPLOYER IN THE WORLD!!!!!!!!!!! And please understand that Labour were the ones who went on a massive spending spree with the nations credit cards and now the money has to be paid back - or are you another lefty who doesn't understand that concept and thinks if you shout loud enough you should get it. When Labour introduced 'Breast Feeding Advocates' into the NHS at an average of £36k per year, I knew we had lost the plot. In this one instance there are over 150 breast feeding advocate teams in England with an average of 12 per team - that is almost £69MILLION per year on wages for people to co-erce and pressure new vulnerable mothers to breast feed!!! - You know the worst thing - to be a breast feeding advocate, you have to be a qualified midwife, but no longer required to do midwifery!!! Labour lunatics had the purse strings to the asylum! Thanks Labour for creating this NHS monster - The current gov are correct - it is a huge machine that needs to be trimmed down and re structured to make it fit for purpose.

How much did you donate to Tory funds?

I wonder where your family came from, over with William the conk maybe?

Or was your family one of those that only came out of the poverty of Victorian slums, simply because it hung onto the coat tails of those millions of TU members who took strike action to get you what you have today.

I retract not one word of my previous comments, The facts are this government is endangering OUR security by supporting, very loudly at that, the thugs who, hopefully, Assad's troops will wipe off the streets in Syria, and also hopefully the Syrians will take on board that not all of our peo[ple are in the same camp as you.
