50p Tax Rate Should Be Scrapped, Say Businesses

More than 500 business leaders called today for the "damaging" 50p top rate of tax to be ditched in the budget.

Entrepreneurs from across the country accused Chancellor George Osborne of putting "populist politics before sound economics".

They claim the levy is halting the expansion of their businesses and warn the tax has left money-makers in a "very awkward position".

In a letter to The Daily Telegraph, 537 small and medium-sized business owners said: "Given the current state of the UK economy, we urge the Chancellor to urgently consider scrapping the top rate of tax in his forthcoming budget.

"The tax, which is in effect a 58p tax after national insurance is taken into account, puts wealth creators like us in a very awkward position.

We believe the richest should help the poorest in society. 1% of taxpayers are forecast to contribute nearly 28% of income taxes. But penalising high earners through an unfair, politically-motivated tax puts populist politics before sound economics."

The letter adds: "The result is that the 50p tax is set to reduce government income, and damage the economy, the public services and charitable giving."

Earlier this year David Cameron said he still regarded the rate - introduced by Labour in 2010 - as a "temporary" measure following reports that the Government had accepted would be politically difficult to axe it before the 2015 general election.

Among the signatories is Tony Stein, director at Canterbury Care. He said: "The 50p tax rate is a disincentive to job creation. Times are hard and reducing the resources available to entrepreneurs to reinvest in new business is the wrong outcome for the country."

Andrew Denny, managing director of Fix-a-Form International, said: "I am simply trying to create wealth for me, my kids and my loyal staff. Why are high earners treated like they have committed a crime and should be punished?"

Martin Jones, operations director at Covpress, said: "The 50p tax is unfair and unjustified."

Rachel Reeves, shadow chief secretary to the Treasury, said cutting tax was not "the priority now": "When millions of families and pensioners on middle and low incomes are being squeezed by the VAT rise and cuts to tax credits, cutting taxes only for the richest 1% cannot be the right priority now.

"But these business owners are right to call on the Government to take action to stimulate growth and jobs in our economy."

In July chief secretary to the Treasury Danny Alexander said those who thought the priority was to cut the 50p tax were living in "cloud cuckoo land."

Damaging to whom exactly?

To the kids who have had their E.M.A removed, or the student now paying £9000 a year to go to university, or the public sector workers facing pay freeze for a third year in a row or the one million under 24s out of work?

time for serious redistribution, the accumulation of wealth by the richest has gone too far and the poorest 10% are paying far too much of their meager incomes in taxes, their kids are losing opportunities and social mobility is going backwards

That's a surprise isn't it. People paying the higher rate tax think the 50p rate should be cut to 40p. So how much would that save people like MP's, Ministers, Richard Branson, Alan Sugar and alike?

This stinks again ,of the already rich wanting to be even richer! If any tax is going to be cut it should be on low paid workers. You know the ones? They spend their money on everyday stuff from local businesses. Not the ones who spend their money on second homes in foreign climes and holidays to exotic destinations etc. Perhaps the economic stimulus lies in the hands of the poorly paid many rather than the well paid few?

The gaurdian of the rich is about to tinker with the budget and all the little piggy's have come running to the trough.
Taxation is high and needs to be addressed to benefit the whole population not a few high earners. At the first opportunity VAT should be reduced to the previous levels then followed by a reduction in fuel tax. Both measures benefiting all, not just 1% after that a reduction in the base rate of income tax taking the lowest earners out of tax. After that the standard rate of income tax reduced and finally the top rate.
The goverment as rightly or wrongly took us in to a period of austerity but has given no plans for an exit strategy, giving benchmarks to achive to reverse some of the measures they deem necessary to cut debt. Without this exit strategy I have no faith in their overall plan as they stumble from one crisis to the next.

The 50p tax rate should be cut. If you look at history, by cutting top rate tax you actually increase the take of taxes as people stop avoiding paying tax. Taxes should be fair and be seen to be fair.

When top footballers, celebrities (Bono) and businessmen (Phillip Green) avoid paying taxes by having sharp accountants and lawyers and by moving overseas or making themselves one man 'companies' that is what should be stopped. Why are so many football clubs 'in negotiation' with the tax man or in debt to HMRC?

The main aim should be to make all people pay tax, when advisors to HMRC can be paid via their own tax avoidance deals, what hope is there for the rest of us. Under Labour, Tolleys, the tax handbook, doubled in size allowing even more lawyers and accountants to find ways for their rich clients to avoid paying tax! That is what is wrong.

Even if the 50% tax rate was cut to 5% they would still have an army of lawyers trying to reduce that. Look at the USA for evidence most cry when stumping up as little as 14% of their millions.

Don't forget, it is not a 50p in the pound tax, you have to add in NI which then takes it to 62%. Everyone forgets how, under Brown's Chancellorship NI increased by 20%! He could not put up Income Tax as he promised he wouldn't, but NI is a tax just like income tax. isn't it? You also need to look at California, when Reagan cut taxes but increased State tincome. It does work if you get rid off the all the tax avoidance deals etc. brought in during the last 15 years.

The 50% rate comes in at incomes above £150,000

In Real Terms, what that means is that somebody paying 50% Tax gets a minimum of £1,700ish a week to live on.

Poor Souls. How CAN they manage ?

We MUST do more for them. After all, We're All In This Together, aren't we ?

you do have to wonder how they cope.

take Huhne when he left office his salary was £380 a DAY (140,000 PA approx), and at 40% tax he was getting £152 a day (seven days a week). Spare him a thought when his pay dropped to about £76 a day (seven days a week).

Deserves a tear actually.

No wonder he accepts £17,000

If that is the case'..I think they could afford at least an extra 5p more in tax then?(55p)...I could manage on half of that amount each week....That extra tax would be useful for decent care for our elderly and poverty relief etc...Like you're good self'..I wonder how they cope on £1,700' per week?!!

Politicians are in the business of getting votes and in lining their own pockets.
10:45 AM on 03/01/2012
Don't cut it INCREASE it to 75% on all income not reinvested in the buisiness - that would encourage real investment.
It would be interesting to see the Tax Rates ACTUALLY paid by this lot. Anyone want to bet on less than 30% the rest "avoided" like the companies they run?

This is such a bad idea - bad economics and morally wrong. I mean with money tight, the notion that you give more money to the richest 1% is just insane. By far the best way to provide a much needed economic stimulus is by cutting taxes for the poorest who will go and buy things - it is fundamental economics!

We analyse it further in the following piece: http://www.allthatsleft.co.uk/2012/03/is-dropping-the-50p-tax-bracket-sound-economics/

The wrong people get these big wages and for doing what?
£50,000 a week for a footballer, £580 a day for a minister, £1,000,000 a year for a banker, with bonuses that the ordinary man would have to work a lifetime for.

none of them are worth that sort of money when youth cannot get jobs and many are on the minimum wage.

Robin Hood turned around

it is all wrong and until it changes we will stumble from economic crisis to crisis

cut the 50p rate

you should be so lucky to be earning enough to have to pay that rate.

If they want a cut in the rate then businesses should be forced to engage more school leavers or people at above the minimum wage

I shut down a successful business I has built up from scratch because of Labour's taxes. I won't be starting it back up anytime soon.
09:53 AM on 03/01/2012
Now we have it, such a 'successful' government, being attacked from all sides, even it's own, for the very reason it has been attacking all around it.

It will not ,listen to any of those it is currently attacking, a certain recipe for it being ousted sooner than later.

The governance of Britain is now out of the hands of the elected government, even though it's only a faux elected one, it's in the hands of the established civil service, which is directing policy, otherwise these matters that are being attacked would be put aside and left to the Tories favourite concept, 'Market Forces' .. as they are not, the government must be getting directed from Whitehall and not Downing Street.

Time for a good dose of anarchy as I see it.

Warren Buffett disagrees about tax rates being a disincentive for the really good investors investing. This 50p tax rate is far far better than what existed in the 1970s. They should really stop whining.
09:46 AM on 03/01/2012
It is fine to have a high tax rate, as long as return can be seen in the form of improved or additional public services. The UK hasn't really seen that in a while...

keep the good businesses and get rid of the worst

If the 50% rate and above, drives the best abroad, let them go, the best don't seem to be doing us that much good.

and if our bankers and politicians, who helped bring on the mess, wanted to go abroad, let them go, the 'best' nearly ruined this country, let them go ruin another country's economy.

lets face it, they ain't that good
