Jack Frew
Jack Frew was murdered

A teenager convicted of murdering a "happy, loving and vibrant" schoolboy was handed a life sentence today and told he must serve a minimum of 18 years.

Jack Frew, 16, bled to death when he was stabbed 20 times with a kitchen knife. His throat was slit during the attack in secluded woodland near his school in East Kilbride, South Lanarkshire, in May 2010.

At the High Court in Edinburgh today, Craig Roy, 19, was given a life sentence for the attack and told he will spend at least 18 years behind bars.

Roy was convicted of murdering the 16-year-old at the High Court in Glasgow in January.

He claimed the younger boy had pestered him and tried to blackmail him for sex.

During the 12-day trial, the jury heard that Roy had cheated on his long-term boyfriend Christopher Hannah with Jack and was plagued by guilt over his infidelity.

He admitted stabbing the openly gay teenager but claimed to have no memory of it.

On the night of the murder, he said Jack sent a text message telling him to meet him in woods near their school. He claimed to have taken the knife to the meeting to "scare" the younger boy into leaving him alone.

Jack's windpipe was cut open, his lungs were punctured and there was knife damage to his ribs.

Instead of calling an ambulance for the dying teenager, Roy phoned his boyfriend for help for himself.

It took a jury less than two hours to return a unanimous guilty verdict.

After the conviction, Jack's parents Lorraine and Robert Frew said their son was "a happy, loving vibrant boy who loved life and brought fun and laughter to every situation".

They added: "Jack loved people, had the world at his fingertips with a promising future ahead and he would have made the most of every minute."

This kid/murderer deserves atleast life in prison. I do believe in an eye for an eye. I believe he deserves the same fate he brought on to this innocent boy. Whenever someone feels that they are more important and can cause harm, or take someone's life, they think of this murderer watching himself die from a slit throat, punctured lung, and more. EYE for an EYE. I hope he gets his in prison everyday!!! God bless the slain boys family and friends. I will keep them in my prayers.

I don't know how you can butcher someone and claim no memory of it. He sounds a right nasty piece of work.

as long as there are still people around with iqs matching their shoe sizes that will believe a story like that there will still be defendants around to claim it.

Are you saying Craig Roy is innocent?

It always makes me wonder how so many people can condemn the actions of a violent murderer yet still wish a violent death upon another person. Reeks of hypocrisy.

Agreed. It's embarrassing that some people's reactions are so base.

And these are the ones who got it together to come on-line and read the news!

I don't agree with you. I don't think he got what he deserves at all !!! Elegible for parole in 18 years? Is the victim elegible to come back to life after 18 years? I think not. He needs to fry. NOW....not 20-30 years from now, after 100 appeals at the tax payers' expense.

gosh dont it make you bloody sick such terrible things, he should be put down like the mad dog he is. Every year will cost us about £50,000 to keep him?

He was given a life sentence for the attack and then told he will spend at least 18 years behind bars. THAT is NOT a life sentance. I really just don't understand our justice system (or the lack of justice). Why does 'life' not mean 'life'? Do they know something we don't know, because that must mean that he is only expected to live till he's 37. If not, then he will be free to continue with his life, whilst the young boy's family have been given a real life sentance because of his actions.

When he gets to prison....if he lives 18 years, it will be 18 years of H E L L, when the other inmates find out what he is in there for!!! I doubt, very seriously, he will spend 18 years incarcerated, unless it's in a box, which, in my book, THAT is what he deserves!!!

There is only justice at the end of a rope for violent individuals such as this lad, throat cut and 19 wounds is not an accident .
13:34 on 01/03/2012
I feel the only life sentence that has been handed out here is to the victims family. They will have the rest of their lives without a son, brother, grandchild. Never see him grow up and never see what he will achieve in his life. To me you take a life, you lose your life and remain in jail till you die thinking about the evil you have caused. This was not an accident or an error, this was deliberate premeditated murder and so he should suffer as the victims family obviously will. The defendant could be released at 37, still young enough to enjoy a good life, unlike the victim.

what's wrong with a life for a life ?(if it's a conviction without any doubt),save the tax payers a fortune
13:01 on 01/03/2012
That makes the judge also a murder.

Oh, crap! Open your eyes. How would you feel if someone did that to someone you love? A life should equal a life, taken, not served behind bars. Save the overcrowded prisons and the rest of us law-abiding people who pay for them to have tv, games rooms and privileges!

These minimum terms should be abolished and life mean life.
12:50 on 01/03/2012
This individual is not a teenager, he is classed as an adult as he is nineteen and therefore in my eyes he should be hung with all of the others who commit murder.
13:28 on 01/03/2012
lock him up in a dark pit, no supplies and a knife, and wait, justice will be self served.

he should spend the whole of his life in prison, if you stab someone 20 times and slit their throat then you are determined to kill that person.
so let's hope the parole board do their job in 18 years time and refuse this killer parole and keep refusing it.

UK, weak justice, he'll be out on 'good behavior', like so many. Death penalty, much better for seriously disturbed people like this, much cheaper too. OK, yes, we're playing god, but don't we (human race) do that all the time.

UK, weak justice????? The U.S. is just as bad, if not worse. Our so called system of justice gives drug dealers more time than Murderers and Child Molesters.
When it comes to violent crimes, such as murder, agg. assaults, rapes, both adult and children; the convicted needs to get what they handed out !!! Death for death. Rape for rape. Beating for Beating. I; for one, am so tired of hearing about criminals in this country getting slaps on the wrist for committing crimes against their fellow man. I say AN EYE FOR AN EYE !!!
