David Miliband: Vladimir Putin Is A 'Ruthless Dictator'

Miliband

Vladimir Putin is a "ruthless" dictator whose days are numbered, David Miliband said today as Russians go to the polls.

The former foreign secretary warned it would be wrong to underestimate the "intelligent" leader but predicted he
will not survive a six-year term at the Kremlin.

Mr Miliband chose to make the robust attack in the second edition of The Sun on Sunday, a move that will be a shot across the bows of Labour figures who are trying to distance themselves from the News International stable.

In an article for the newspaper, he wrote: "Whether or not Vladimir Putin wins today, he will not be celebrating a fourth term in office six years from now.

"Whoever wins the election today, one thing is clear: Russia will not be the same.

"The people of Russia have spoken up, and a wise leader would listen."

Mr Putin is expected to return to the Kremlin for his third term as president following one term as prime minister but under an atmosphere of strong public unrest.

His United Russia party barely retained its parliamentary majority after elections staged in December despite alleged vote-rigging.

Police are braced for public disorder once the vote closes following unprecedented mass protests over Mr Putin's system of so-called "managed democracy".

Mr Miliband wrote: "Russian nationalists, communists and liberals who have taken to the streets in their tens of thousands in temperatures well below freezing don't agree about much, but they are united against corruption, stagnation and arbitrary rule.

"It is wrong to underestimate Putin. He is intelligent, worldly and ruthless. In the first term of his presidency, in the wake of the embarrassing latter years of Boris Yeltsin, the rhetoric and to some extent reality was about reform as well as order.

"Russians got their pride back - floating on a tide of oil and gas revenues. But since then Russian reform has gone into reverse, and vested interests consolidated their positions."

Relations between Britain and Russia reached breaking point after the murder in London of dissident critic Alexander Litvinenko.

Correction - An earlier headline on this story incorrectly attributed these comments to Labour leader Ed Miliband, rather than his brother David. We're not the first to have done it, and we probably won't be the last. Sorry.

At least our leaders listen. Labour didn't open our doors to millions of immigrants, then allowed millions of eastern Europeans into this country for their own selfish sake, they did it to benefit the British people, now we are all feeling and benefiting from Labour's vision. Our NHS is fantastic, our pensioners have never been so well off, the job centre has employed many more people to help us all, agencies have sprouted up everywhere to help workers get well paid and secured jobs, public transport cheap and reliable, education has never been better, teenagers saying please and thankyou. How dare we run Russia down??????????????

Putin is a formidable leader that the west does not have the likes of him, he has transformed Russia from an economic basket case to a Russia that works for the good of the Russian people. The world needs another super power to control the USA that has been focused on wars, Two wars I consider useless Iraq and Afghanistan. The west due it its bad policy has now allowed two super powers Russia and China come to gather in time in a conventional war the west will never be able to match the powers of these two countries, we have missed the opportunity in getting these two countries be part of our military planning, we began meddling with Russia back yard beginning with Georgia and failed. Today we are considering attacking a country of the likes of Iran that has thus far not made a nuke bomb, we are threatened that they have the knowledge are we saying countires in the future that aquire knowledge shall be attacked. Putin has failed in Russia. It is still a commodity based economy, highly bureaucratic and with a low life expectancy. The buildings are drab the food expensive and the people surly. If anything it is too influenced by the west with the usual fast food outlets eg the dreaded Macdonalds. The metro in St Petersburg is very cheap and efficient but this has not changed for 50 years.

Your comments is biased I have been to Russia several times during the communist era and after communism, You owe your freedom to Russia they destroyed Hitler mightiest 4.5 million Army, Churchill in 1944 said where it not for Russia that broke the back of the mightiest Hitler Army we shall all live in dark ages, he also included the USA. Perhaps you have not visited some of the drab areas of the US and the UK. By Joseph Foster

There is nothing wrong in promoting my book, some of my comments add to knowledge and gives a balance picture not one biased with prejudice heavily against Russia and communism. Neither economic system has solved massive poverty. Capitalism prior to the Chinese revolution caused millions to die from lack of food and shelter. I by no means support communism or Tyranny. Today 47 million people in the USA lives on food stamps.
After I read all of the bad things in the western media about communism in Russia, I decided to visit Russia and as a successful capitalist lived in Moscow for nine months; my research reveals that many of the negative aspect about Russia were not true. If you think it is bad in Russia please visit Watts in Los Angeles, also East Los Angeles, then some parts of Harlem, as to the UK perhaps a visit to some of the slums in Liverpool and London.
Today capitalism is bent on supporting communism in China because low paid Chinese workers elevate profits. In my book I have written a chapter titled, ‘’The China story’’ this chapter could not be completed until I decided to visit China.

David Miliband, you're talking nonsense, and this is a not good talk. David Miliband does not understand, the system in Russian. David Miliband is treating people like fools.

Miliband has clearly not had to work with Russians. They find it difficult if not impossible to vote for what they feel might be the best candidate. If they ever do consider voting even for who should be on the enertainments committee at ones plant they would only talk with each other in the Russian language as if their talk is recorded by someone from the western side of the old Iron Curtain !

It is almost genetic that even on simple issues they prefer to wait for an icon to decend from heaven to tell them who to vote for, and if they dare not wait for this icon, it seems as if the ancestral memories of the salt minens prevents natural thought, debate, and even mild discussion let alone fair and independent voting.

and .... ??????
So what !!!
Who cares ?? I don't care.
I care about fuel prices / increased taxes / beneit reductions .. etc

Does anyone really think Putin gives a toss about a British MP who tells his story in the Sun !!!! Come on !!!!!! Perhaps if our own politicians spent less time looking over the horizon and spent more time concentrating on UK plc we might solve some of our problems a bit quicker. Whats happening in Syria, Russia, Eggwhip, Libya etc does not concern me 1 little bit. Whats happening in UK does concern me because that affects my family.
Milliband and Milliband are the next Laurel / Hardy or Morecambe / Wise or 2 Ronnies or Little / Large.

What has Miliband been on, is he proposing we bring about regime change in Russia? Putin certainly does have Weapons Of Mass Destruction so it won't be necessary for Alastair Campbell to sex-up any documents.

Now anyone who challenge lies is a terrorist. God bless us

Vladimir Putin Is A 'Ruthless Dictator' ? So why we don't threw a military assault against him like it was with Lybia, and the day when Russia send his atomic bombe on us, who gonna die ? It's the poor people, cos Mr Miliband will be somewhere in Australia while his own people's getting burn because of his ireasponsible statements ! So Miliband, instead of speaking nonsens, let the people's mind in peace, and in any case Poutine will never be more ruthless than Russian nationalists Hitleriste and communists Staliniste partis who demonstrate now.
11:56 PM on 03/04/2012
It will never happen. So don't worry about it !.
05:31 PM on 03/04/2012
Well at last the Millibands have found a platform upon which they might be listened because nobody in the UK is interested in their opinions anymore. One got us into the mess we face and the other hasnt got a clue how to get us out.

If, as I suspect Israel bombs Iran, over the nuclear arms issue, the dictator Putin, will suddenly be in a much stronger position in his own country.,He is cheek by jowl with more Arab countries, than we or the USA are, and that will stand him in good stead with his countrymen. That said, I rather feel that the cold war between the West and Russia, is starting to hot up. (Pardon for that). I can see bad things on the horizon.

If history is anything to go by, when there is a world financial meltdown,a war very soon follows.

Milliband, though it pains me to say it, is correct. I cannot lie and refute what he says, right is right and he is, on this occasion, right. Few people will take any notice of him because of his past and his affiliations with so many deadbeats. That aside Eggnchips assertion below is worthy of best comedy one liner of the year, move over Tim Vine. Putin is an old school soviet dictator despite the frapperies of elections. He detests Gorbachov and believes Gorby's policies of "glasnost" and " perestroika" that led to the dissolution of the USSR, to be the greatest mishap of the 20th century. From the West's perspective it diluted for all time the military might of the Soviet Union. It didn't disolve it but it made that country more cautious with its threats, less able to dictate world politics from the mantle of fear of a nuclear war. Putin is poison, the young people in Russia know that and his time is limited. I think he will scrape in at this election but his days are numbered.

Just seen the news. I was right. No one will take any notice of the claims it was a rigged election!
07:07 PM on 03/04/2012
I think you'll find Putin romped it. Yes he is old school but that's what a lot of Russians want, they don't like their newly acquired reputation as the most corrupt nation on earth. As for the young people you are a long way wide of the mark, the Nashi is made up entirely of young people and they are Putin's stormtroopers.
