Libyan Rebels Filmed Desecrating British War Graves (VIDEO)

Grave Desecration

First Posted: 4/03/2012 13:32 Updated: 4/03/2012 13:36   PA

The Libyan government has been "extremely apologetic" about the desecration of British war graves in the eastern city of Benghazi, a Foreign Office Minister said today.

Speaking on the Sky News Murnaghan programme, Jeremy Browne said people would be understandably upset by images of damaged graves in today's papers, including the Mail on Sunday.

But he said the attacks were not aimed particularly at Britain or Christians, and did not represent a Libyan response to last year's military action when British aircraft took part in a campaign which toppled Colonel Gadaffi from his role as dictator in the North African country.

Mr Browne told the programme: "There is an appalling story and people will be shocked by the photos. My grandfather's generation were truly heroic in that part of Africa in the Second World War and I think people will be shocked by what they see.

"It is worth saying the Libyan authorities themselves are shocked too. We have had direct dealings with them. They have been extremely apologetic and made a very strong commitment they will get to the bottom of this happening. They will try and do everything they can to resolve it.

"My understanding it is not just British graves or just Christian graves that have been desecrated, there is wider desecration taking place. The Libyan authorities are keen to work with us on this.

"I would not want people to think this is somehow an ingratitude by the government of Libya. That's not the case."

More than 1,200 Commonwealth soldiers and airmen are buried in the eastern city of Benghazi. Of the 1,051 identified graves, 851 are British.

Many were members of the 7th Armoured Division, known as the Desert Rats, which played a key role in fighting for control of Libya and Egypt between 1941 and 1943.

Reports in the Mail on Sunday said the attacks on graves took place over two days last week. A video was recorded by one of the men involved and posted online, the paper said.

Mustafa Abdul Jalil, head of state in Libya's caretaker government, told the paper the attacks were "unethical, irresponsible and criminal", adding: "(The Libyan government) severely denounces such shameful acts and vows to find and prosecute the perpetrators."

A Commonwealth War Graves Commission spokesman told the Mail on Sunday that the graves would be restored "to a standard befitting the sacrifice of those commemorated at Benghazi".

He added: "This could take some time because we will need to source replacement stones."

In Libiya there are Libiyan lives and once foreign troops left, who does what it is there business which they conduct in their own country. When taliban started their religion in Afghanistan and they blew up statue of toll standing Budhhas whole world could not do anything because they said it is our business what we do in our own country so i believe what Libiyan do in their own country it is no one else business but theirs. Can world force them not to do it? Not all doing it but few unknown and there is no end to it when this short of crime take place in the world.

The British should realise that they are no longer a force to reckon with....

I don't know very much about it. But it worries me that Britain invades these countries because Britain has a different type of politics, or because these countries don't want to give their oil to Britain or America, or Trade with them. We are leaving Britain wide open for revengeful attacks from these aggrieved countries. I wish Politicians in Britain would think about the consequences before they give guns and weapons to these other countries and before Britain starts dropping bombs on innocent women and children. It's OK for the Politicans - they don't have to travel on public transport, they travel in their bullet proof cars, surrounded by security. It's ordinary people in Britain that get blown up by people from other countries that now hate Britain. We would not like it if another country invaded Britain or dropped bombs on innocent women and children in Britain - so we cannot expect to do this to other countries and get away with it. There will be revenge attacks unfortunately. Two wrongs don't make a right. It would be better if Britain did not supply weapons and stopped invading other countries, bringing down leaders, etc. Would we like it if a foreign country came into Britain and killed our Leaders or dropped bombs on innocent people in Britain?

I'm British and it hurts a lot to see Libyans doing this to these Gravestones. However, I would like to know why the Libyans are so very angry with Britain. There is no justification for doing this to Gravestones, but I still want to understand why? What has Britain done to them that has made these people hate Britain so much?

It is a hate crime just like British muslims who gang rape and murder British white children. Where are the news headlines about that?

Well reviewing the comments I am amazed. No deep seated huffpost defense of "free Libyans" expressing their rights in a free state. No using any shoddy defense of offended muslim sensibilities for the burning of the Quran. Why no moral ourage at why such an event wasn't committed sooner by these poor downtrodden, previously oppresses people who are merely expressing their Allah-given feelings at the horrendous oppressing, corrupt Western terrorist soldiers who have the audacity to be buried in their newly "liberated" country. Where is the liberal outcry, where is the humanity???????

Yeah, once you've stopped eating your billy goats, you'll maybe realise that liberal or conservative, there's general a very deep respect for those who died fighting wars on behalf of the country. Even in the case of somewhere like Afghanistan we might complain about why our troops are over there, but it's almost unheard of for people to show anything but the utmost respect to those coffins that are flown home on a semi-regular basis.

"there's general a very deep respect for those who died fighting wars on behalf of the country"

Really that would be the hope and expectation, wouldn't it? Apparently, as the above story indicates...not a universal hope and expectation!

Benghazi , the threatened city the west went to war for now has armed thugs desecrating graves ?
Say what you like about the Gaddafi regime but this would never have happened if they were still in power. And it must be remebered that Gaddafi himself said the uprising in Libya was led by Islamic terrorists.
It seems we have all been led up the proverbial garden path regarding the real reason for the attack on Libya , which it seems is now a more dangerous and divided country than it was before the wests intervention , as is Iraq and other middle east countries where the west has been involved in moves to 'democracy.'

I'm trying to think of something to say that would end in expletives at this deplorable desecration of war graves. Not a single person in that video is worthy of licking the boots of those buried in that cemetery. What really horrifies me and breaks my heart is that not one person is even trying to stop what's going on there...not one.

Honestly, it makes you wonder why we even bothered to help.
10:00 AM on 03/05/2012
Doesn't it make you feel great knowing that we brought them 'Democracy' We gave them the freedom to do what they want, when they want.

high five!

Excuse me? It's mentioned that they are Commonwealth graves, not just British. Trust a Christian to make it about religion when it's about the sacrifice those men made during WW2. Especially as their were Hindus, Muslims and Jews serving in the Commonwealth during that era, or don't they count?
10:22 AM on 03/05/2012
You need to enlighten yourself to facts before making banal comments. The reports specifically say British and Commonwealth graves. To educate you ,that means Brit ,Australian , New Zealand , Indian, South African etc. The only countries involved in the destruction of Hitlers Africa Corps.

As disgusting as Gaddafi and his family were, they were what was needed to keep a country like Libya under control. The new "rebel" government are every bit as bad. We have spent millions helping these ungrateful lunatics and still the price of fuel goes up. We should have just kept bombing them and got ourselves an oil supply. If the World at large is happy for Argentina to take the Falklands, surely no one will mind us having Libya.

May be its time we took to the streets in Protest of theses barbaric actions!

Lack of education is the main problem in these countries,
ignorance breeds ignorance.
