Pensions Deal Rejected
Unions Reject Government's Pension Offer

Civil and public servants overwhelmingly rejected the Government's pensions offer today, setting the stage for a fresh round of industrial action.

The Public and Commercial Services Union (PCS) said its consultation ballot of members had shown support for continuing a campaign against pension changes.

Some 90.5% of those who took part in the ballot rejected the Government's proposals for a new pension scheme, and 72.1% backed continuing the campaign, including further industrial action with other unions.

The announcement came as the National Union of Teachers (NUT) said it was calling a one-day regional strike in London on March 28 as the next step in its pensions campaign.

The national executive committee of the PCS, which represents around 290,000 civil and public servants, will now meet on Monday to consider the ballot results, the position of other unions and to decide on the next step.

PCS general secretary Mark Serwotka said: "Civil and public servants can see that this Government simply wants to make them pay for the mistakes of bankers and politicians, and have rejected by a massive margin this attack on their pensions.

"Ministers must now seriously engage in negotiations on the core issues if they want a settlement.

"The vote shows we remain committed to resisting this Government's attacks on pensions, jobs and pay, and to working with other unions to build further co-ordinated industrial action."

The Government has been embroiled in an ongoing row with unions over the future of public sector pensions.

While some have now agreed to accept a deal, other unions have rejected the Government's offer, maintaining that it will leave then working longer, paying in more and receiving less when they retire.

Ministers argue that changes are needed to make pensions sustainable for the future.

Announcing the one-day London strike today, NUT general secretary Christine Blower said: "The Government is well aware that teachers do not accept the changes that they propose to make to our pensions. The vast majority of teaching unions have not signed up to the latest pension proposals which still mean that teachers will have to pay much more, work much longer and get much less in retirement.

"The NUT believes it is essential that the teaching profession stands united on this issue. Working and taking action together in June and November 2011 brought some concessions from Government, but they do not go far enough. We have no evidence whatsoever that teachers' pensions are unaffordable."

London-based members of the University and College Union (UCU) who are part of the Teachers' Pension Scheme will also take part in the walkout on March 28.

And the Rail, Maritime and Transport union said yesterday that more than 600 of its members at the Royal Fleet Auxiliary, which supports and services the Navy, will walk out on March 28.

All this spew and venom directed towards the Government from opposition supporters without a single, affordable alternative offered!!!
The Labour party of Kinnock, Hattersley, Foot, Big Dennis H..... Now THEY had policies! Brave ones, Affordable ones, FAIR ones! Labour post-John Smith has NOTHING to offer the masses. NOTHING!!!
Those of us who didn't want Bliar and Prescott, were stamped on by our own party in the blind stampede to get into power, and what a Sows Ear those Judas' made of a glorious opportunity! DO NOT TRUST ANYONE WHO COULD SCREW THE COUNTRY UP LIKE NEW LABOUR DID! Look for a decent socialist candidate, with the sense to see what is and isn't affordable, one who doesn't cowtow to the electorate it created at an unaffordable cost to rest in society.

official figures put the council pension funds 100 billion in debt . Private pensions 200 billion in debt . So who is going to pay for the pensions of the 3.2 million immigrants the labour party let in

Try walking out for a month, you might get somewhere then, one day of lost wages is only refilling government coffers, if the month gets no results try indefinitely, otherwise its lambs to the slaughter. And for all you private sector clowns out there don't think any of this will benefit you in the long term, these creeps are edging towards minimum wage across the board for the masses, a return to the Victorian era with the chosen few having it all at our expense.

The way things are going'..I'll be surprised if anyone gets a decent pension (Public or Private)..except for the Top 1%'...who are laughing at all of us'..on the way to OUR Banks...The fact is this Government have duped people with private pensions anyway'..This is the game the Tories have been playing all along'...Everyones' gonna get sucker'd believe me..?..Divide & Rule..

If I had a final salary index-linked pension of course I would want to keep it as well, especially as someone else would be paying for it.
Have you ever heard of bankers turning down their bonuses ?No.
Similarly, government employees (ie people paid by the taxpayers, who themselves do not have these benefits) will not be keen to voluntarily relinquish their benefits.
Ignore any strikes.

I wonder how many Union officials will lose money when their members go on strike? I would hazard a guess at none. The reason a lot people take on the role of a Union Rep is because it offers them an opportunity to advance within the Union and get among the six figure wage earners.

Govt spoiling for a fight is right - because they think they can win it - and improve their standing in the polls.

If strikes are called during the olympics, the government are going to look really bad,but they have brought this situation on themselves.
04:25 on 17/03/2012
For the unions to be heard they should strike over the full term of the games .This goverment are riding roughshod over everyone ,even ignoring doctors and the house of lords
